  • Cox customers in Kansas get two more HD channels

    Not even a fortnight after Cox Communications added four new HD options to its Kansas lineup, along comes news that two more channels have popped up sans warning. According to tipster Kevin, the provider has added HGTV HD and Food Network HD on channels 627 and 628, respectively. The more the merrier, right?[Thanks, Kevin O.]

  • The 'proud nails' of City of Heroes design

    Zubon, of the award-winning Kill Ten Rats cooperative blog, has a great design discussion up on on the site concerning the 'proud nails' of City of Heroes' elder game. The term 'proud nail' is one that Zubon and I both enjoy from the design discussions on the official Wizards of the Coast website. Wizards makes the tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons, and many of the observations they make there are easily transposable to Massively Multiplayer games.Proud nails are 'design snags', problems that screw up the smooth movement of design mechanics. On the D&D site, examples include 'ten foot square' horses, crazily random lists of special abilities for monsters, and the strange way that bow ranges are calculated. Zubon's 'proud nail' list for City of Heroes focuses on the insanity of pitting high-level heroes primarily against a single villain group called the Carnival of Shadows. The Carnival has some serious issues, primarily stemming from their annoying attack moves and the famously weak amount of content at CoH's highest levels.I think 'proud nail' is a really useful term ... can anyone else point out a proud nail from any other games that immediately spring to mind?

    I'm constantly amazed at the creativity of people that play games where it's not easy to make Machinima. They don't have custom animations, model viewers, chromakeying, or just about anything else. City of Heroes and City of Villains are two of those games.Samuraiko Productions has created an energetic, fist-pumping music video, set to Blue Man Group's "Time to Start." Our very own CoX lead, Jonathan Northwood, wrote about her talent just last month! Set in Pocket D, one of the most recognizable areas in the game, both heroes and villains were able to to contribute to the video.     As we've previously mentioned, many MMOs are currently running their winter events, and we here at Massively have started to compile a gallery of screen shots from various titles: Saint Nicholas may not be sharing today, but -- as you can see from the snowball fight above -- we're going to share everything from the missions to the mischief.     Massively's very own CoX lead, Jonathan Northwood, has a great eye for Machinima! Night Prayers is about good versus evil, from what I can tell, as it lacks a description. If I'm reading into it correctly, a man prays to go to the dark side, as the tale unfolds using only film and the occasional written word.Vertical Studio has found a way to make the City of Heroes and City of Villains platforms cinematic, and judging by other videos from the games, it's not easy. They are a small team whose goal is to make quality Machinima, using original music and elaborate shots. They even took home the Grand Prize award at the first French Machinima Festival in November 2006 for their first film, Dies Irae![Thanks, Jonathan!]

    NCsoft has announced the winners of the annual CoX Halloween costume contest, and the results are up on the official forums. We'd like to congratulate CutestLilHero for winning the Best Overall, and kudos to both Reginold Longbarrel and Komic Kitten for Best Villain and Best Hero, respectively. The Community Pick winner was Dark-Hammer.A gallery of the official winners -- as well as images of the Community Pick contestants -- is available, so check out the creativity your fellow players show in matching life to art. Each year, this contest lets you know who wears the Spandex in the City of Heroes/Villains universe. And, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, a discussion section has been opened on the official forums.

    It's been a long time since City of Heroes launched and up to the sale of the CoX property to NCsoft, Cryptic Studios added quite a bit more into the game. Not just City of Villains with its slew of additional content but also additional levels, tailors for extra costumes/costume redesigns, epic archetypes, plenty of new zones, PvP elements, game balances, new powers, an item system that allows players to invent all sorts of things and even an alien invasion or two. Just recently players were given with another set of new powers that they themselves were able to help choose via the official forums! While that laundry list of additions is quite well and good, for me it still feels like something is missing from my super hero game.Largely, I think the problem lies with what the game engine is and isn't capable of rendering. The recent inclusion of customizable melee weapons and guns/bows has made me realize something. What about the guy who shoots fire or throws punches full of pure energy? What if I want to create a magic character ala Dr. Strange and green magical fire sounds really cool to me? Well too bad, my fire looks like everyone's boring red fire and there's not a thing that I can do about it. Yet in a game where customization is king, personal touches like green fire or red and purple energy blasts seem to me an incredibly important feature. I've paid a lot more than one or two months of subscription fees just to design myself some characters in CoX and I only manage to get them to around level 14. Just imagine how much more money and time someone would spend given further customization choices.

    It's very debatable, but the biggest investment into any MMO is time. It's one thing to just pay to play the game, as there are several per-month services you can pay for, such as cable television, or car insurance, or sometimes simple things like a book club. But no normal service, however, require both the time and monetary investment like an MMO does. They are designed from the ground up to be full of grinding, time-wasting, and slow experience gain. But why is that?

    Robert Garriott, the soon-to-be former President of NCsoft North America, dropped a "State of the Union" style press release yesterday regarding the massive online gaming company. It's a brief but insightful rundown detailing what they've done with their Intellectual Properties (Tabula Rasa, Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Lineage, Dungeon Runners, etc.) in the past year, and what they intend do with them in the coming year. Garriott also mentioned new projects they're working, like AION: Tower of Eternity, and the recently signed pact with Sony where NCsoft will be producing products for the PlayStation 3. While no details were given on exactly what those products may be, Garriott said the first one should be released by the end of 2008. This new deal includes porting "existing titles in interesting new ways or utilizing new IPs." Hmmm, intriguing.Of particular interest to me was Robert's comments regarding the City of Heroes property. Back in early November NCsoft acquired the entire IP from Cryptic Studios - lock, stock and two smoking blaster barrels. Like wildfire the CoX forums were consumed by doomsayers and speculators decrying that this was the beginning of the end. Not so. According to Garriott, they loved the property so much they wanted to re-invest in it, and the best way to do that was to buy it. Since then they've created a whole new studio (NCsoft NorCal) and hired the entire CoH development team. If that wasn't enough to give even the most cynical gamer a glimmer of hope, they're currently hiring more people to take CoX to a "whole.. nutha... level."Last but least... as reported yesterday, Robert Garriott will be leaving his post as President of NCsoft's North American business and moving into a role of global business development and planning. Taking his place will be NCsoft's current vice president of worldwide product development, Chris Chung, who has been with the company for some time. The change will take effect on January 1, 2008. A Happy New Year indeed! All in all, I'd say the future looks very bright for NCsoft.

    NCsoft has a reputation for focusing on both the human element as well as the metahuman in their games, and their corporate culture is no different. This year, the City of Heroes team is auctioning off a poster signed by the development team, a signed City of Villains Collector's Edition game box, and a City of Villains Lord Recluse statue, with all of the proceeds benefitting the Seattle-based Child's Play charity. Whether you frequent Paragon City or make your lair in the Rogue Isles, it's Child's Play to help yourself to some CoX goodness this holiday season, and to help out children in need at the same time.

  • Winter has arrived in CoX

    The CoX Winter Event went live yesterday. After getting some quality hands on time with the newly revamped festival of snow and lights... color me impressed! Along with all the same stuff from years gone by, the newly added ability to obtain medals for the fastest time down the ski slopes is absolutely addicting. Aside from earning bragging rights (complete with your name listed on the leader board - until you get dethroned at least), you also get badges based on your times down the slope. Last night I managed to obtain the Speed Demon (gold), Accelerated (silver) and Qualified (bronze) badges - all of which can be found under the Accomplishment badge tab.Finding and opening the Gamesters presents has always been fun, and a bit tedious when trying to obtain the associated badges. So it needed a little somethin' somethin'. Candy Canes are a new type of salvage that you can get from successfully opening up presents. Sometimes you'll get a temporary power, a Candy Cane, or both. Unsuccessful openings get you some frosty snowmen to battle. While the goodies aren't shabby, they're things that have been available in past events. For instance, 10 CC's will get you a Jingle Jet temporary power. Twenty stripped canes will buy you Renewal of Light, a temporary resurrection power. In total there are 6 goodies to pick up.All in all it appears this year's Winter Event will be the best one yet. Besides the constant plethora of free updates to the game, NCsoft always comes through with in-game events for their players. Just one more reason to live in the City of Heroes (and Villains)!

    User Monorail over in the official CoX forums has come up with an indispensable program for those players running through Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. What started out as an easy to make bind program for his Mastermind (the villainous archetype that controls hordes of minions) turned into something much more. CityBinder creates custom binds for both City of Heroes and City of Villains, and saves a profile for each character, making updating them a snap.CityBinder will create a hoary host of binds that include (but aren't limited to) SpeedOnDemand binds, MM binds for commanding henchmen, setting aggressive/passive state, a pill popper bindset, and even basic chat, slashchat, autoreply, target-tell, and quickchat. CityBinder was created using Lua and the IUP Portable User Interface making it easy for new binds to be added. Check the CityBinder Project Page for news and forums. All new releases can be found at CityBinder Release Files. As veteran CoX players know, binds make the game a lot more fun. If you want to have a more enjoyable experience as your bashing Arachnos, flaming Longbow, or just doing a little street cleaning in your friendly crime infested virtual neighborhood... grab this program and leave your worries behind.

Where it really comes together, however, is in the classic legacy of live events, where developers and game masters interact with the players in-game. But not only that, they assist in furthering the story, or fleshing out the game world. But where did live events come from?

    The giving just keeps on spreading, and that's just the way we like it. Shortly after Northern Virginia got hooked up with 11 new high-definition options, it looks like Sin City has been blessed with five of its own. Reportedly, TLC HD, HGTV HD, Food Network HD, Discovery HD and CW HD landed in Cox's Las Vegas, Nevada region, and have been assigned to channels 722, 723, 724, 727 and 734, respectively. According to AVSForum members residing in Vegas, the channels were supposed to go live yesterday, so for those who've had a chance to check it out, did Cox deliver?[Thanks, D2point0]

  • Cox backs down from DirecTV lawsuit

    Make no mistake, the battle for HD bragging rights among service providers is fierce. Witness the legal battles that DirecTV has taken on with numerous cable companies over advertisement claims. Strike the lawsuit between Cox Communications and DirecTV from the list, however -- it's been settled. At the heart of the matter is Cox's attempt to "recast" the findings of a Comcast-commissioned survey showing Comcast picture quality was preferred over both DirecTV and DISH. Since the lawsuit was initiated, Cox has removed all references to the survey from its website, which now the only cites "no ugly dish or extra equipment to buy" as an advantage of Cox cable over satellite HDTV. Other terms of the settlement are, ahem, confidential.

  • Cox Arizona getting VOD via SSD-based servers

    It's one thing to get video-on-demand, but it's another thing if that content is being served up via Concurrent's MediaHawk 4500. Apparently, Cox Communications' Arizona division will be using the aforementioned media server -- which automatically detects failures and re-routes streams to alternate paths -- to dish out VOD content to its customers. Additionally, the unit relies on solid state discs, presumably making everything a bit snappier for the end user. We're not told whether HD material will be included in this VOD rollout, but nevertheless, deployment is scheduled to begin in Q1 of next year.[Via Multichannel News]
