  • Some Assembly Required: A virtual world roundup

If you are perusing this column, chances are you are a fan of virtual worlds and the sandbox genre. Join the club! (Dues will be due on the third Tuesday.) The aspect that compels many aficionados to delve into a game is the ability to make an impact on the world in some small respect instead of making them into Hive Member 1593072 running a static, predetermined gauntlet. How that impact is accomplished, however, varies; there are multiple features that can facilitate it, and which ones are considered most important depends on the player. With the loss of one of the best sandbox games just last month, some players may be feeling a void. Others still are looking/hoping for the "ultimate" sandbox that contains nearly every virtual world feature. Certainly, there are some upcoming games that make some drool-worthy promises, but what about playing something now? There are actually games out on the market that have at least one aspect of the genre, if not more. To start off the new year, Some Assembly Required looks at some of the top features of virtual worlds and lists games that incorporate these features. While this list isn't exhaustive (considering the sheer number of games when you include all of the smaller free-to-play titles, I'd run out of column space!), it is a comprehensive enough overview to point you toward some games worth playing that perhaps you hadn't considered before.

It's been a while since we've checked in with Craft of Gods, a free-to-play MMORPG based on Slavic mythology and produced by the Russian game studio known as Cyberdemons. We figured post-patch day is as good a time as any, and the latest update to the Kalicanthus Entertainment title has brought about a slew of changes including new quests, new dungeons, and revamped newbie areas. Cyberdemons has also added recurring in-game events that include a special PvP cave featuring boss key drops and loot chests, named events featuring special named mobs at various locations in the game world, and a weekly mob-focused double experience event. Take a look at the official patch notes for the full list of fixes, tweaks, and additions.

Each week Rise and Shiny asks you to download and try a different free-to-play game, chosen by me, Beau Hindman. Some of the games will be far out of your gaming comfort zone, and some will pleasantly surprise you. We will meet each Tuesday and Friday night at 8 PM Central time, followed by this column the Saturday after. I welcome any suggestions for games, either in the comments or at beau at massively dot com. This week I asked you to take a look at Craft of Gods, an independent game from Kalicanthus Entertaintment. At first glance I was excited to try it, given that it promised a lot of what I normally value in an MMORPG. I usually ask my readers to try a free-to-play game, but the 10-day free trial would provide us with enough time to get a good grip on what the game has to offer. I warn you, though, this review will not be pretty. I really wish it could be, being that my independent run has been so haphazard as of late, but this game was pushed out much too early and it shows. Read on!

We've been watching Craft of Gods with interest as it proceeded through several stages of open beta, improving things along the way. Now the work that the developers have been putting into the game is about to pay off: it's launch day. Players are invited to explore Akvilon, a "huge world with 25 different maps," which offers a variety of different areas to discover from forests to deserts to frozen plains. There are six races to choose from, a variety of skill sets to learn, and a decision to be made -- will you fight for light or darkness? Craft of Gods offers a free ten-day trial, so if you want to check it out before purchasing visit the site to sign up.

As Craft of Gods approaches its May 27th launch date, the developers are preparing some offers and a new trailer video for fans. If you are planning to purchase the game, check with your gaming friends before you get out the credit card because Craft of Gods is available in discounted "pre-order packages" of three and five keys through the Kalicanthus store. Customers who pre-order will also have the advantage of advance game access -- they'll be logging in 24 hours before the official launch time. Kalicanthus is also offering a unique offer for those who participated in the open beta but are still uncertain about their purchase. If you want to see how the finished product turns out after the last round of changes and fixes are made, you'll find a special trial server available after launch for that very purpose. Anyone who participated in beta testing can log into the trial server for ten days of free play with their existing account. Keep an eye on the Craft of Gods site for all the latest information, and check out the newest video after the jump!

Beware the old gods, travelers. While the ground you trod upon currently may well seem solid, danger lurks at every turn, waiting to turn you into deity-kibble! But if you love all things fantasy -- and love the idea of supporting indie studios -- then the upcoming MMO being developed by Cyberdemons and released by Kalicanthus Entertainment, Craft of Gods, may be something you want to look into. Currently in an open beta phase, Craft of Gods is based on Slavic history. Yes, indeed -- this means gods with enormous elemental smitey-hammers -- and the humans who dare to cross their paths. In short, the perfect types of stories for heroic tales told by firelight. In terms of recent updates to the game, players will notice that the UI has been revamped to make it more user-friendly, and a bunch of close-combat animations have been added in since we last touched on the game's development. If you're curious, be sure to check out the shiny new screenshots below, or pop over to their site to sign up for the beta. But you'd better get a move on if you're after beta love -- the game is set to launch on May 27th, with those who pre-order landing a wild-looking mount, a flame cloak, and an epic weapon. %Gallery-89418%

Last week we talked about Craft of Gods, the upcoming MMO from Russian developer Cyberdemons. The game is entering its third open beta April 2nd and will continue until the 6th. Craft of Gods may have the appearance of a traditional fantasy MMO at first glance, but it's a bit more open in that it has no defined classes. Players instead choose from fourteen different "schools of skills" as they advance. If the game looks interesting to you, you'll definitely want to get into the open beta. However, we've got a sneak peek for you in the form of some brand new screenshots to look over while you wait. These new creatures and scenarios will be appearing in the upcoming open beta. You'll see both friend and foe, including a gigantic praying mantis (that one's a foe -- don't try to make friends with it.) and a winged succub that can be summoned as an ally. Take a look at the gallery, and then check out the open beta! %Gallery-89418%
