Did you play the remastered versions of the Shenmue games and wish that Sega and d3t had done more than port the titles largely unchanged? So did the developers, apparently. Digital Foundry has discovered that the team had originally been working on remakes that included dramatically improved graphics. While the characters and locations were extremely familiar, virtually everything had much more sophisticated geometry and higher-resolution textures -- flat roofs and blocky people suddenly popped with detail. There were also more advanced lighting effects, such as ambient occlusion (how objects interact with ambient light), more realistic reflections and shadow maps.

Super Stardust Ultra, an upgrade of Resogun developer Housemarque's original 2007 release known as Super Stardust HD, will bring the twin-stick shooter's fast-paced, spherical battlegrounds to the PlayStation 4 in early 2015 for $12.99. As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Super Stardust Ultra will offer new planets, new game modes and visual upgrades, as well as an Interactive Streaming mode that lets viewers "vote periodically to change up your gameplay." High score rivalries can run rampant via leaderboards, but players will also be able to send challenges directly to their friends. Should things get heated, Ultra can host splitscreen battles for up to four players, and once you're done sacrificing a friendship for points, you can try mending things in the returning co-op mode. Just remember: Bragging rights are highly effective at instantly dissolving truces. [Image: XDEV, D3T]

Following up on last year's launch of Lemmings for PlayStation Mobile, developer d3t has announced the upcoming release of Lemmings Touch, a revised version of the classic puzzler for the PlayStation Vita. Along with powers and abilities featured in previous Lemmings games, players can use new touch-and-drag elements within each level to guide the mindless rodents to their salvation and/or doom. In addition, d3t warns that "not all Lemmings are quite what they seem," hinting at the possibility of enemy characters interfering with the proceedings. A release date for Lemmings Touch is not yet known, though d3t notes that more details will be available soon.

  • THQ UK studio officially shuttered, three new companies take its place

It's been exactly one month to the day since THQ announced plans to close both Kaos Studios (creator of Homefront) and its UK-based digital studio, THQ Warrington (creator of Red Faction Battlegrounds and Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team). And while the former studio has been closed since last month, the latter has just finished up its legally required "notification process." But enough with the upsetting stuff -- there's good news, too! Though the Warrington studio just closed, three companies have already sprung from its ashes: D3T, a "concept team" named Alien Apple Studios, and an unnamed studio helmed by former creative director Don Whiteford and former production director Richard Badger. Of the approximately 50 employees at THQ Warrington when it closed, 36 had their employment terminated "effective immediately," while another 10 are said to be seeing the studio through the PSN release of Warhammer 40K: Kill Team, set for some point later this summer. Additionally, THQ Warrington founder Colin Bell will be taking an extended break from game development, though he couldn't help but point out before leaving that the Juiced franchise (which his team developed) has moved "over 5 million" units in its lifetime, and that Kill Team "will be a great parting product for the studio." Sony UK and Motorstorm studio Evolution have apparently extended offers to some ex-THQ employees for consultancy work, and we have high hopes that the rest of the studio's affected devs will land on their feet.
