  • Visceral open to old IP, Dead Space sells 1.4 million

With the renaming of EA Redwood Shores to Visceral Games came the announcement that the rechristened studio would focus on generating new intellectual properties. While the studio is working on new IPs, Visceral's general manager Glen Schofield told GameSpot, "If the right license came along--the right movie, the right book or whatever--we'd do that as well." Stating that Visceral wouldn't just be "The New IP House," Schofield pointed to Capcom as a good example of a company that produces great original IP that can be turned into franchises, something he hopes to see happen for Dead Space.Dead Space, according to Schofield, has moved 1.4 million copies across the Xbox, Playstation and PC. Schofield is satisfied with the numbers given the economic conditions when the game launched last October. He adds that used sales and rentals probably add up to 3 or 4 million people having played the game. Schofield has high hopes for the upcoming Dead Space: Extraction for Wii, saying that both Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil 4 sold very well.Regarding Dante's Inferno, Schofield says turning the epic poem into a video game has been fairly simple, noting that the nine circles of Hell translate perfectly into nine different game sections. Adapting the story, said Schofield, is simply "a writing exercise." Remember that, kids: Turning a 14th century Italian poet into a sword-wielding badass is a writing exercise.

  • EA Redwood Shores becomes Visceral Games, gets moody logo

EA Redwood Shores (aka EARS), an internal development studio within EA, was suffering a bit of an identity crisis. Known for making some of EA's best and brightest stuff -- including last year's Dead Space and the upcoming Dante's Inferno -- the studio just didn't feel right with such a ... less than descriptive name. That changed today, as its parent company EA announced a rebranding of the studio, now dubbed Visceral Games. And while the studio is still working on the aforementioned Dante's Inferno as well as the now Wii-ified spin-off of Dead Space, titled Dead Space: Extraction, it's also apparently working on "two other unannounced titles." Little did we know! The studio claims to be identifiable as one with a "focus on creating intense action-oriented intellectual properties," a claim that needs little substantiation considering its back catalog. Now, can we hear a little bit more about those two unannounced titles please?

click to enlarge In the summer of 2007, Electronic Arts and the US military began a top-secret project aimed at creating a perfect clone of God of War II. Before it could be completed, the game escaped, undergoing minor cosmetic surgery and adopting a new backstory in an attempt to elude its creators. It used the name ... Dante's Inferno. At least that's how we like to romanticize the origin of Dante's Inferno. In reality, it's more of a shameless God of War play-exactly-alike than X-Men Origins: Wolverine could ever aspire to be -- but at least EA chose an excellent game to ape. Curious what hell looks like in the palm of your hand? Eurogamer.pt has posted a pair of in-game shots taken from the recently announced PSP version of Dante's Inferno, which, while impressive, only further cement the notion that this particular take on Divine Comedy offers the liberalest of interpretations. Set to ship sometime in 2010 alongside home console versions, Dante's Inferno for the PSP is being jointly developed by EA Redwood Shores and Wet developer A2M. The Prince of Lies' involvement in the project, however, remains purely rumor and speculation -- but, we can hear him whispering, whispering, whisper ...%Gallery-51141%

Electronic Arts has announced that its forthcoming, hellish action romp, Dante's Inferno, will be heating up the PSP in 2010. The portable version will ship alongside those previously announced for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Wet developer A2M working with EA Redwood Shores to translate the game's nine circles of hell onto the small screen. Even with this news, details remain scant on the project. Still, given the game's purported God of War-style gameplay, we have high hopes that Dante will be able to follow in the Ghost of Sparta's miniaturized footsteps when Dante's Inferno ships for the PSP next year.

Just as it did with Dead Space, Electronic Arts has announced an upcoming animated adaptation of EA Redwood Shores' next project, Dante's Inferno. With a feature film already in the works at Universal, the straight-to-DVD movie is being handled by Starz Media's Film Roman, the same folks behind Dead Space's animated flick, Downfall. The feature is expected to ship alongside the hellish action game in 2010, with different animation houses each offering their own take on Dante Alighieri's nine circles of hell. Details remain short, though as anyone who endured a marathon airing of Rambo and the Forces of Freedom can tell you, there's no better medium to convey hell's lurking horrors than a cartoon.

Though EA's pledge to focus on quality games and new IP may have resulted in critical approval and a more positive image among gamers, the company has still been forced to take serious financial cost-cutting measures in recent months. Thankfully, Glen Schofield, manager of EA's Redwood Shores studio, isn't about to let some unpleasant realities get in the way of staff morale and a commitment to top-notch titles."I said, look, I can't tell you if this is the end or not, but we're making some great games here," Schofield relayed to GI.biz. "If we continue to make great games, if we continue to push this, we're not going to lose our jobs. Because we're making great stuff." The studio hopes to follow up the positively received but commercially disappointing survival-horror, Dead Space, with potentially great stuff like The Godfather II and hellish actioner Dante's Inferno.Schofield reportedly told his staff, "People who aren't making great games are going to lose their jobs. But if you're making quality and we continue to push on that, and you're a quality person then you're going to keep your job." That almost sounds like a threat, doesn't it? Talk about the man(tra) sticking it to you.

Click to enter Hades the Inferno! Perhaps not divine, but we're seeing obvious comedy in these first Dante's Inferno assets, released today by EA. Of course, Redwood Shores no doubt wants us to take its adaptation of the 14th century Italian epic quite seriously, it being concerned with Hell and all. Still, we're not seeing these images as portraying anything other than another God of War -- a cross-wielding, Christian "God of War" (see what we mean after the break ... ). Not that the concept is a bad one, given it's being anointed by the very smooth hands of the Dead Space developers. Just don't expect us to sit here quietly, holding in our giggles. %Gallery-45836%

  • Dante's Inferno fires up new 'go to hell' trailer

The God of War comparisons used to describe the video game adaptation of Dante's Inferno are rather evident in the new "Go to Hell" trailer, courtesy of Eurogamer. The dark atmosphere and brooding musical score of EA's new action title mimics the vibes felt in SCEA's God of War games, especially the new one. The two stories also share obvious parallels: trips to the underworld and epic-scale battles against mythical creatures. We're not saying Dante's Inferno will be just another clone. We're just saying, if you've liked that other game, then you might like this one too. Give that "source" link a click!

The latest issue of British magazine PSM3 has a ten-page preview of EA's upcoming hell-em-up Dante's Inferno, which it calls "Dead Space meets God Of War in hell." CVG has pulled some interesting tidbits from the article, including a claim that "button-for-button the controls are identical to [God of War's]." In fact, Dante's Inferno sounds very similar to God of War in many ways. Health and mana orbs are dropped when enemies die and are also found in chests, which are "opened by holding Circle." The game also features QTEs and combos utilizing the protagonist's light and heavy attacks. Apparently, it's the subject matter that sets Dante's Inferno apart from God of War. It is "altogether more unpleasant," where "twisted creatures burst from doorways, lava spews from inverted crosses and bottomless fiery pits yawn deep beneath your feet."If God of War III doesn't make it out this year, Dante's Inferno may be just the thing to tide action fans over. If GoW III does make it out in '09, however ... well, we're not expecting Dante to beat Kratos at his own game, are we? Check out the latest issue of PSM3 for the full preview.

Right after the break check out Dante's Inferno, Watchmen, Terminator Salvation, Mafia II and Fight Night Round 4. So, what's the verdict? Do these clips have you pumped for 2009? Electronic Arts may be planning fewer titles next year, but that won't stop EA Redwood Shores from sending players straight to hell. The Dead Space developers have officially announced their next hellish project, dubbed Dante's Inferno.Little is known about the upcoming third-person action title, other than it will be based upon Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. Jonathan Knight, executive producer on Dante's Inferno, simply notes that "the time is right" to adapt the 14th Century literary work into a game, though with Universal tapped to twist the game into a movie, clearly the time is also right to make lots of money. A teaser site and embedded video have also been released, and after playing through Dead Space it seems that we might soon abandon all hope of sleeping through the night.

The cart has beaten the horse to the finish line as Universal Pictures garnered the film rights to Electronic Art's as-yet unannounced game, allegedly titled Dante's Inferno. The studio beat out Paramount, New Regency, MGM and Warner Bros. in the multi-million dollar deal. According to Variety, the plan is to release the movie closer to the "beginning of the game's life cycle" -- no word on when that will be. EA has yet to confirm the game's title, which is simply speculated to be Dante's Inferno and involves a "journey through the depths of hell." We're still wrapping our brains over a movie being tied to a game's release so soon ... times are a changin'.

Variety reports that four movie studios are currently bidding for the film rights to Electronic Arts' as-yet unnannounced game based on Dante's Inferno. EA's recently been on a movie deal bender, selling the rights to films based on Army of Two (suckers) and Mass Effect, but this is the first real "cart before horse" deal we've heard about. We've certainly seen some high-profile game-to-movie deals in recent memory, with Gore Verbinski helming BioShock and Brett Ratner taking on God of War. Maybe it doesn't matter that movie executives are bidding on the rights to a game that nobody has seen, but for our money we'd like to know if there's an audience for it first.
