  • Get your deal on with Best Buy

Here at the Fanboy, we're always looking out for our reader's financial interests. We could charge you a daily fee to read our articles, like those ridiculous "paper" publications do. We could make you register and send you spam E-mail nineteen times a day. But no! It's all free, kindly bestowed upon you from the bottom of our hearts. In a similar vein, we thought we should inform you of this oh-so-wonderful deal that Best Buy is offering: buy 2 DS games online, and get another (of equal or lesser value) free! That's right, it's time to go beef up your collection. We recommend some oldies-but-goldies: Sonic Rush, Nintendogs, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and Meteos are all prime (and perhaps discounted) games that deserve your attention. Heck, you could enjoy two new DS games and get a present for your little brother without having to spend a penny on him. Brilliant! Some qualifications: you need to have a My Nintendo account (something we'd recommend anyway, as they tend to send out free bonuses every so often) and register your Nintendo DS with the site. Also, be sure to order directly from BestBuy.com. The promotion ends on September 15th, so get buyin'! [Thanks, Vincent!]

Microsoft has repeatedly said that they won't be cutting the price of the 360, but then, reader Lorul2 never thought he'd have "three kids and dead end job." Things change, and they obviously have in the UK where GamesIndustry.biz confirms the Xbox 360 Core System is now selling for the official price of £199 off of £209. That's converts to a drop of about $19. No word on a similar price cut for other SKUs or markets. Will this invigorate interest in the lowly core system?[Thanks Lorul2]

The deals just keep on coming. Easily the most high-profile game to come out this week, Madden 07, is available for dirt cheap at Circuit City. The game has earned a solid 8.0 from IGN, and most likely doesn't feature the horrible glitches of NCAA Football. $28 is a great price to satiate football fans, until next year's minor upgrade installment.[Via Cheapassgamer]

Bargain-hunting reader Chris reports that Fry's Electronics, a retailer with locations mostly in the Southwest and California, is selling several EA 360 titles for the palatable price of $27.99. Games include FIFA '06, NBA Live '06, Madden '06, Tiger Woods '06, and Burnout. He's not sure if the price is applicable outside of Arizona, but it's worth a look if there's a location in your neighborhood.

If you're still wallowing in self-pity because Microsoft shot down rumors of a 360 price drop, this deal might cheer your cheap ass up. Overstock.com is letting premium systems go for the low, low price of $352.51 after applying a 12% discount for first time customers (At least they were. See below). It looks like you can save another 5% by signing up for their affinity credit card. Now whip out the plastic like a real American and be glad you're not selling a kidney to afford a PS3.Update: Damn -- It sold out while I was typing this post. Maybe they'll re-overstock. In the mean time, anybody want to buy a kidney?[Thanks Clayton A.]

The July issue of Game Informer has a "Buy two used games, get one free" coupon for use at Gamestop/EB, pictured above in post rip-out condition. They discount the cheapest game so you need to buy three $55 games to get the full value out of it. There's also a $20 extra trade-in credit coupon for when you trade in that crusty old system.

VersionTracker has announced a new bundle offer included with purchases of VersionTracker Pro subscriptions. For the first 350 who purchase, renew or extend a VersionTracker Pro subscription, they will receive a free license to the new DivX Pro (a $19.99 value), which we blogged last month. DivX, as you might remember, is a fairly popular video codec used on the internet and compatible with other devices such as DVD players and PDAs. VersionTracker Pro, if you need a refresher, is "an automated, simple and cost-effective way to inventory and keep all your software current and secure". It is a service and software package (also a widget, of course) that allows you to view new versions of just the software you use, manage the downloading and install of new packages, and more. VersionTracker Pro costs $49.99/year for up to three Macs.If you're interested, we recommend you run (don't walk!) as they only have 350 DivX licenses to hand out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

  • Google outbids Microsoft for Dell bundling deal, sez WSJ

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has succeeded in outbidding Microsoft for the right to integrate its search tools into the millions of personal computers that Dell will sell over the next three years. After Yahoo dropped out of what may have been a billion-dollar auction, sources say that along with its desire to increase the exposure of its services, it was Google's frustration over the perceived difficulty in changing the default settings in Internet Explorer to non-MSN search options that ultimately motivated the company to emerge victorious. Besides winning a coveted spot on IE's default homepage, the deal also nets Google some valuable desktop real estate, as its Desktop software -- privacy concerns and all -- will now come pre-installed on Dell machines. For most consumers, this deal really doesn't mean too much, except for those of you who are really into MSN search, in which case you'll have to take a few seconds and adjust your browser settings.

  • MacZOT fever spreading with MysteryZOTs

Remember MacZOT, the bargain-a-day shareware site? It seems like it's catching on as wildfire, as they now have a "MysteryZOT" offering that seems to be all the rage. A MysteryZOT is a bundle of a few shareware apps for a ridiculously low price. The catch is that you have to place an order before you get to find out what you're ordering.Sounds crazy? As of around 5 PM yesterday afternoon, over four hundred people would like to disagree with you, as this post at the MacZOT blog says they've sold 402 of the alloted 500 packages of yesterday's MysteryZOT. This morning I noticed they sold their entire lot and have revealed its contents, which includes iClip, the NotePad widget (with full search and print functionality) and the FTP Drop widget which offers a handy DnD (drag-n-drop) operation for sending files up to a directory on a server you specify. At only $14.95 for these apps and three others (instead of $53.70), I'm starting to wonder if I missed out on a good deal. Did any of you TUAW readers jump on yesterday's MysteryZOT? Are you glad you did, or are you missing your $14.95?

  • Apple clearing out iMac G5s?

We don't usually mention bargains here on TUAW, as there are plenty of other sites already doing a fine job of that. However, TUAW reader Adam noticed that the 20" iMac G5 has dropped quite a bit in price to $1499 in the online Apple Store, bringing the edu price down even lower to $1399. These are not refurbs or special deals of any kind as far as I can tell, which leads me to wonder if this might be the first sign of the iMac G5's inevitable disappearance. Speculation aside however, it's a smokin' deal on a big iMac that's still pretty speedy. Get 'em while they're hot.

  • But who gets top bunk? HANA and 1394 TA to share a booth at CES

    by

More of this "collaboration" as some people call it, I'm taking a cue from the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps and thumbing my nose at all forms of standardization and cooperative efforts. The latest two draw my ire are the 1394 Trade Association and HANA who will be showing off how they can make your digital media devices connect better and more easily in just one booth at CES. I mean really, who wants that, now Kevin can't get the exercise of walking back and forth from booth to booth. It's a fact, 1394 makes kids and Kevins fat. From the release: "At ICES, HANA will demonstrate HD audio-video room-to-room networking with a network interface unit. It also will host a demonstration featuring audio and video distributed using 1394 through a variety of legacy products including Cable STBs, D-VCRs, AV hard drives, camcorders and a new HDTV. The Trade Association will participate in the booth, and plans to establish a formal liaison with HANA early in 2006."Blah blah blah, all this working together makes me sick, excuse me while I go work on some proprietary technology.
