Apple has just released iOS 13.2. If you own a new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro, you'll want to download this update as soon as possible as it includes Apple's new Deep Fusion photography feature. In short, the feature is Apple's response to recent advancements made by Google in computational photography. In the words of Phil Schiller, the feature uses "computational photography mad science" to process photos in a way that makes them look more natural, with less noise and better detail. The "mad science," as it were, is that the feature takes advantage of machine learning and image stacking to render each pixel of a photo optimally. You'll likely see the benefits of Apple's new approach most in less than ideal lighting conditions, but it should help to improve all your photos.

You now have a chance to try Apple's machine learning-based Deep Fusion photography if you're willing to live on the bleeding edge. It's releasing an iOS 13.2 developer beta (public likely to follow soon) that makes Deep Fusion available to iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro owners. The technique uses machine learning to create highly detailed, sharper and more natural-looking photos on the primary and telephoto lenses by combining the results of multiple shots.

In announcing the iPhones 11 Pro, Phil Schiller tipped us off to a new feature that'll come to the flagship smartphones in the next year. Deep Fusion is a system which Schiller describes as "computational photography mad science," which is likely to be the company's answer, more or less, to Google's Night Sight.

As usual, Apple's latest batch of iPhones aren't exactly surprising, thanks to plenty of detailed leaks throughout the year. Today, the company unveiled the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, its high-end smartphones that'll join the slightly cheaper iPhone 11. You might have noticed the name changes this time around: the 11 Pro models are direct successors to last year's "XS" phones, while the 11 is the cheaper alternative following the iPhone XR. There are a few design changes, like a "surgical-grade stainless steel" case and matte finish, but the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are more focused on cramming in as much camera power as possible.
