If you thought the US' decision to screen social network posts for visa applicants risked giving innocent people the boot, you guessed correctly. US officials have deported new Harvard student Ismail Ajjawi not based on his own posts, but those on his friends list. While he said he avoided politics in his own posts, some of his contacts reportedly expressed "points of view that oppose the US." It didn't matter that he didn't interact with them -- Customs and Border Protection promptly cancelled his visa while he was still in the airport for questioning.

In a letter (PDF), the acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that the agency doesn't use its Stingray mobile call-intercepting devices while enforcing immigration laws. It does deploy them when pursuing criminal suspects, however, and individual agents might use them while acting in a joint task force with other federal officers.

The NYC mayor's office has announced that it will no longer store personal records for immigrants who apply for the city's free IDNYC identification card. While the card allows users to secure accounts for utilities, banking and more, officials fear President-elect Trump could use the database for his proposed deportation plans. Mayor Bill de Blasio said in the weeks following the election that he would keep cardholders' personal records from the federal government and other authorities.

An Egyptian student studying in California faces deportation after posting a threatening message about Donald Trump on Facebook. 23-year-old Emad Elsayed posted a picture of Trump on FB back in February with a caption to the effect of, according to his attorney, "If I killed this guy I wouldn't mind serving a life sentence and the world would thank me." While this statement seems fairly innocuous compared to the abuse President Obama endures on social media (and most women for that matter), federal agents have since detained Elsayed and are now threatening to deport him.

If any of you have seen that film Children of Men, you probably noticed the horrible treatment this imaginary England of the future imposed on illegal immigrants. Well, it just might be the opposite here in reality, as word hits that deportees in detainment get some play time with Nintendo's latest console before being shipped off. These detainees are currently shacked up at Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre in Berkshire, where they enjoy a TV in every cell and some other amenities (we wonder if they're giving each other tats). This is, of course, questionable, as to whether these folk deserve such luxuries is obviously cause for debate. It's even being reported that some of the folks here are rapists and murderers.See also: Steal Nintendo and go to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200[Via CVG]
