Google might not have as many YouTube Music subscribers as Spotify, but it has way more software engineers. It's now applying some of those smarts to better compete against its rival with a new automated playlist called "Discover Mix," spotted by 9 to 5 Google and some Reddit users. It's very similar in concept to Spotify's "Discover Weekly," in that it helps you find new songs and artists in line with your taste and listening history.

You wouldn't think that Apple and Spotify's relationship would be thawing out anytime soon, given that Spotify has lodged an antitrust complaint against its streaming rival in the EU. It's no secret that Discover Weekly is a popular personalized playlist for Spotify users. The custom playlist the streaming service builds based on your listening habits each week quickly amassed tens of millions of users after its introduction in 2015. Ads have been included on the playlist for a while if you have a free account, but now Spotify is giving brands the ability to completely customize the sponsored messages that appear in its most popular playlist.

Spotify announced today that it's making it easier for artists and labels to submit new music to its playlist editors. The company has released a new feature, which is still in beta, that will allow artists and managers with a Spotify for Artists account or labels using Spotify Analytics to submit an unreleased song for curated playlist consideration. That track will then be available to the over 100 editors Spotify has around the world, who can search through submissions for appropriate additions to the playlists they design.

Spotify has added another personalized playlist to its lineup, but rather than a compilation of what you've been listening to or what you might like to hear, this one takes you back to what you used to play, probably on a CD or something. "Your Time Capsule" features 30 songs that "take you back in time to your teenage years," and the playlist is around two hours long.

However, with all the different configurations to choose from, the number of options can be a bit daunting. Don't fret: The company has a new tool to lend a hand and it's powered by your Spotify streaming habit.

Everybody hates Mondays, but Spotify listeners probably hate them a bit less than most. That's when the service's "Discover Weekly" playlists get refreshed, which offer a selection of personalized tracks based on your listening habits. Since launching last July, Spotify says 40 million users have streamed almost 5 billion Discover Weekly tracks. Not bad for something that just started out as an in-house experiment. (And yes, I'm listening to my Discover Weekly playlist as I type this.)
