  • New Blue Dragon DLC ups the difficulty for free

For those out there who thought Mistwalker's Blue Dragon was too easy for your tastes, Microsoft has just released new content aimed at upping the ante for the RPG's difficulty. Best of all? It's free. Dubbed the Ultra Hard Mod, the new content has three aspects. The first is Game Plus, which allows you to start a new game using a saved file from near the end. The other two are specifically for the masochistic: Hard Mode, reportedly twice as challenging as normal, and Impossible, which is meant to play with characters starting at level 50 or higher. (If you want to do the Impossible at level 10, however, by all means go for it. Let us know how that works out.)

  • New Guitar Hero II DLC adds Trivium, Atreyu and Protest the Hero

Guys who we were always afraid of in high school rejoice! The new pack of Guitar Hero II songs dowloadable through Xbox Live tomorrrow morning (according to ScoreHero) is sure to bring a smile to the Endless Mikes of the world. 500 points will net you (careful of profanity in these links) Trivium's "Detonation," Atreyu with "Right Side of the Bed" and Protest the Hero's "Bury the Hatchet." Wow, why do we have the sudden urge to draw pentagrams on a binder with Wite-Out?This pack comes a month after the last offering: A My Chemical Romancextravaganza, and we're wondering if they're still going to feel like trotting out the black paramilitary gear when they hear how loud their new neighbors can scream. Here's hoping everyone gets along just fine.[Thanks, Pat]

  • RedOctane confirms online multiplayer for Guitar Hero III

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Red_Octane_confirms_online_play_for_Guitar_Hero_III_on_the_Wii'; Kai Huang just wanted to make you guys sweat in his recent interview with Pro-G when he said Guitar Hero III wouldn't have online multiplayer "initially for the Wii, but we are working with Nintendo to see how we can get those features in." Looks like it's actually downloadable content that's on the negotiating table, with nothing confirmed for now. Pro-G has corrected their original interview to reflect the clarification from RedOctane's Jordan Dodge. With the lack of a hard drive for the Wii, this is really no surprise -- but that's something we've long hoped will change in the Wii's future. Even if it doesn't, perhaps we'll see some downloadable content via Wii Ware.

Life is good for fans of massive fantasy worlds who haven't yet found time to see what the whole internet craze was about. Not only will The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year edition be released next week on 360 and PC, but next month you'll be able to buy a standalone disc containing the Shivering Isles expansion along with the Knights of the Nine DLC. The disc will retail for $29.99, a $10 savings over those who bought the packs through Xbox Live. But take note of that "Storage Required" sticker on the box, you still need to have a hard drive for the expansions to live on. Those of you rocking the Core systems are unfortunately still out of luck.

Fresh from the news that Aerosmith is going to be involved with a new iteration of the Guitar Hero franchise, jam band kings the Grateful Dead have cast their patchouli-caked lot with the rhythm rival: Rock Band. The band that's the source of more bloodshot eyes than allergies and swimming pools combined will be giving up 18 tracks for download, including "Truckin'," "Uncle John's Band," "Touch of Grey," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Casey Jones."It's not yet been confirmed if fans will sell their possessions and begin following you around the country if you download the tracks. We'll keep our fingers crossed.[Thanks, Copa]

  • Rare's not going to make any Viva Pinata DLC

Though it may seem tailor-made for it, a Rare staffer has confirmed that Viva Pinata won't be getting any downloadable content. In response to a fan's question in the "Scribes" column on the company's website, a member of the Viva team wrote, "We aren't doing any downloadable content for Viva Piñata because we are much too busy doing something else." So, we lose out on DLC, but gain the greatest commodity of all: Mystery. We know it's not Viva Pinata: Party Animals, that's being developed by Krome. The team member could be talking about the DS version of the game, but we doubt it. Why not call it by name? So, it it Viva 2? Is it a new Jet Force Gemini? (No, it's probably not.) The thrill of anticipation we feel almost makes up for the lack of new, downloadable pinatas! ... Almost. [Via GI.biz. Thanks, Jaap]

For PS3 owners who've been battling it out in Warhawk, having to actually put a disc into your console to play MotorStorm must seem positively last-gen. With a new patch released today, perhaps the positively dirrty racer is trying to prove that, though its soul may be locked in a disc, it too can glean content from the "Information Superhighway." Below is the list of new features. Vehicle Select enhancement – your last-used vehicle in each class will now be presented as the default choice during vehicle selection. Assigned player colours are now displayed in the lobby to make keeping track of your friends and rivals easier during online races and Eliminator matches. Further Player-Stat Improvements. Purchasers of 'Coyote Revenge' can now race this track in Online and Time Attack. Purchasers of Eliminator Mode will find results from this mode also contribute to their Fame Ranking. Track Exploits for Grizzly and Raingod Mesa have been addressed. Headset support – An occasional firewall conflict with headset communications has been resolved. Headset support – voice comms output now available exclusively through headset. Are you tempted yet? Yes, you have to sully yourself by interacting with physical media, but isn't that nostalgic fun to you PS3 owners by now?[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Reminder: Gears of War maps now free

If you're being honest with yourself, you're not going to be paying much attention to Gears of War a little later this month. Now, don't feel bad for Gears, you two guys had a great run. Remember when you tried to stay in the light to avoid getting eaten? Remember the first time you roadie ran? Gears will always treasure those moments, and he knows you will too.But why not give the old guy a proper send off? Why not pop in the disc, give it a spin, and get the "Hidden Fronts" map pack that went free yesterday. Think of it as the last party of senior year, when everybody gets together for one last hurrah. That way, you won't feel too bad when Gears is relegated to its case on the 25th. And remember, no matter which game gets your love next, you and Marcus will always have Emergence Day.

If you haven't loaded up Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 in a while, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you dig the disc out. Last week, the first "Throwback Pack" (originally 800 points in May) went free on the Marketplace. Today, there's a brand new throwback pack, the appropriately titled "Throwback Pack 2", that's absolutely free. The main draws here are seven levels that have been remastered from previous Ghost Recon games. But you'll also find a new mode to play around with, Co-op Exfiltration. Wow, from $15 for eight re-lit maps and 4 co-op missions to seven missions for free -- what a difference a year makes.

  • Shadowrun gets third title update

We had our concerns, but Shadowrun has really impressed with its continued support after launch. It seems that FASA and Microsoft are actually committed to giving the game the sort of fine-tuning it needed to become a top-notch multi-player experience. To that end, the game just received its third title update. Most of the changes are things only fans can appreciate (the "elves' regeneration ability has been tweaked," for example), but we're sure it's a big deal for people who are still gliding and porting. If you aren't among them, maybe now's the time to take Shadowrun for another spin. We've got a full list of changes after the jump.[Via X3F]

If you've been holding out on buying map pack #3 for Lost Planet (that's the one that includes Lost Technology , Ruins, and Ice Drop) you'll be happy to hear that you can now download it for free through the Xbox Live Marketplace. We've got to say, we've been really impressed with Lost Planet's post-release support. Not only have they gotten a ton of new maps, but, more importantly, they've been regularly going free after a certain amount of time. Don't you wish more companies would adopt this DLC structure, or at the very least would slash prices when demand started to dwindle? Capcom's not the only company taking that approach, but we'd sure like to see more follow their lead.

We're not sure how many of have been playing Overlord's multiplayer mode, but if the thing keeping you away from it is the inability to see the anguish in your foes eyes as you send your minions after them, we have good news. Codemasters has confirmed that they're working on a split-screen multiplayer mode for the game, due out "soon" through the Xbox Live Marketplace. We don't know exactly how the multiplayer mode will work (details are scant at the moment) but we do know that the mode will work with all multiplayer maps. Oh, we almost forgot the best part: It's free. Sounds like you may not want to succumb to trade-in fever just yet.[Via X3F]

  • Guitar Hero II on 360 gets My Chemical Romance pack

    08.14.2007

Bust out the eye-liner, paramilitary garb and misplaced anger: A three-pack of My Chemical Romance songs have just hit the Xbox Live Marketplace. If you haven't darkened a Hot Topic door in a few years, the rest of this sentence won't make sense to you, but "Teenagers," "Famous Last Words" and "This is How I Disappear" (all from The Black Parade) are included in the pack. The price is 500 points ($6.25) for the new songs, which are master tracks from the band. We don't understand why these cost the same as the Guitar Hero I rehashes, but we have to say this is a much better value for some great songs, sure to brighten the day of even the most tortured emo kid. [Thanks, Dylan]

This post is not necessarily for you. You may have already read the headline and moved on actually, in which case, thanks for visiting, please enjoy our other posts. Thanks for bearing with us.

  • Want Ninja Gaiden Sigma expansions? Get your wallet ready

Tecmo have recently announced a number of expansions for Ninja Gaiden Sigma being released before the end of the year. In Japan, at least. The first expansion, available in Japan at the end of the month, will include a survival mode in which you must fight back a tidal wave of enemies with limited health. The second expansion will be available in September and will include a new time attack mode. Finally (for now) Rachel will get to play out the survival mode when the third expansion is released in October. There is currently no word on when they will be available in America or Europe. But these expansions won't be free. It may be the case that you'll have to part with a number of shiny cents (and, potentially, even several dollars) if you want these extra nuggets of gameplay. The first expansion will cost the Japanese 315 yen (about $3), but since when did these prices translate directly over from region to region? Is this something you're likely to hand over money for?
