Double XP coming soon to City of Heroes
From Friday July 18th through to Sunday July 20th this year, CoX players will be able to enjoy double XP rewards. Double XP is always a dingtastic time in City of Heroes, and since the changes earlier this year that smoothed the XP curve out, characters are leveling faster than ever before. It's the ideal time to level up an alt or five, given that there are now so many character slots available to put alts in.Although it's not always obvious from the publicity, it's not just XP that doubles on events like this. Influence earned is doubled, too, meaning it's the ideal time to stockpile some earnings for the future, or grab some pricier items from the Consignment House. Prestige is also doubled up, so supergroups can afford larger base plots or more gear. Yes, we know there's not much happening with bases right now, but that may well be changing in the future!
WRUP: Hyborian Age edition
Don't tell us -- we already know what you're playing this week. It starts with Age and ends with Conan, and it launched on Tuesday. Everybody and their barbarian are probably heading back into the Hyborian Age to cut off limbs and fight in real-time and build up cities and do what have you.What else could you be playing. Not Virtual Magic Kingdom, obviously (whoops -- too soon?). You might be setting foot in Dark Age of Camelot to nab some of that sweet, sweet double XP (and in the non-MMO world, we hear Halo 3 has a double XP weekend going on as well). But odds are, unless you tell us otherwise in the comments below (or just shout out your AoC allegiance), you're shedding blood in the newest kid on the block.So tell us: What aRe yoU Playing this weekend? Tabula Rasa reactivation week begins this Friday
NCsoft is sending around an email to lapsed Tabula Rasa players, informing them of a call-back program starting up this Friday. Their "Reactivation Week" begins at 11am EDT on May 2nd, and runs through Friday, May 9th at 5pm EDT. During that time anyone who has had an account in the past can log back in to check out the many changes the game has undergone since launch. They reference several of them in the email, including the new Hybrid races. Just in case you haven't been following along with the game, there's also been new veteran rewards, aggro changes, tweaks to CP assaults ... lots of good stuff.The email also references another upcoming promo for Tabula Rasa: Double XP in Squads. Starting on Wednesday, May 5 at 11am EDT and running through Monday, May 12, 2008 at 5pm EDT (nicely overlapping with part of the reactivation week), players who adventure in a squad will get twice the normal XP. Hats off to General British for the invite and accommodations. We'll see you on the front lines.
Mark these dates on your City of Heroes calendar
Yesterday's surprising announcement of the upcoming player-created content addition to City of Heroes accompanied the game's Fourth Anniversary. Today the folks at NCsoft want to make sure that (just in case we haven't poured over those calendars) we know about some important events coming up in CoH's fifth year. Open Beta testing for Issue 12: Midnight Hour begins in just a few days, on May 6th. The next year has two double XP weekends planned, one on July 18th and another on January 23rd (2009!). Halloween events for the game begin on October 20th (love those Tuatha mobs). And, finally, the annual Winter Event will kick off on December 15th, giving you plenty of time to get in and go toe-to-toe with Jack Frost.%Gallery-21672%
City of Heroes server improvement details
The City of Heroes team announced in their 2008 "State of the Game" post that there we some server upgrades coming soon in preparation of double experience weekend and Valentine's Day events. Considering that the end of January is nearly a week away, you may be wondering just exactly when all these upgrades are going to happen. The answer is soon, very soon. Beginning today (on January 22nd) the server upgrades start. Keep in mind that with each server getting an overhaul it's no normal weekly maintenance. You can expect server downtime to be spread out over different servers for the next two days as well. Champion, Guardian, Justice, Protector and Virtue (also, the training server) are all going down for the first round of upgrades today. Then, tomorrow all servers not upgraded today go down as well. Thankfully, there's a handy forum post concerning all downtimes this week. Expect some more upgrade downtime next week as well, according to the NCsoft Norcal developer post.
