Now, you can also access it from a tab within Duolingo's iPhone app.
Duolingo's ABC app will teach kids how to read and write
Duolingo will release a new app in the coming months with a new audience in mind: children as young as four. It will be called Duolingo ABC, and the company told Wired UK that it will initially focus on teaching kids to read and write in their native tongue. However, the firm's ultimate goal is to create a version for adults and help the hundreds of millions of people who can't read worldwide. Duolingo will apparently roll ABC out as a test in the UK first before making it available in the US and the rest of the world.
Duolingo helps history nerds learn Latin
Duolingo is usually focused on teaching languages that are immediately relevant, even if they're only useful at sci-fi conventions. This, however, isn't one of them. The service has introduced a Classical Latin course that, with the help of the Paideia Institute, will help you learn a language that hasn't been commonly used for centuries -- it's not even the Ecclesiastical Latin still used in churches. The learning process works much like it does in other Duolingo courses, although Latin's complexity could pose a serious challenge. It'll be a while before you're translating ancient murals.
Duolingo and Twitch help streamers teach new languages
You won't have to rely on canned videos if you want to learn a new language through online streams. Duolingo and Twitch are launching a Duolingo Verified Streamer Program that will showcase broadcasters using their channels to teach new languages. Some of them might use Duolingo lessons in their streams, but others will promote the use of other languages in cooking, travel and other real-world situations. They'll also encourage you to practice your linguistic skills in chat.
Now Duolingo teaches the world's five most common languages
Duolingo's expanding language repertoire might just help you with a trip to the Middle East. The service now offers a course that teaches Arabic to English speakers -- specifically, a conversational version of the relatively universal Modern Standard Arabic. The program gradually introduces the alphabet, grammar differences and phonetics of the language to ensure that you're comfortable with the relatively difficult-to-learn linguistic structure.

Duolingo's Klingon course has finally arrived
It's not an exaggeration to say we've been waiting for Duolingo's course in Klingon for years. Now, it's finally making its debut. Star Trek fans (or really, anyone who's interested in taking a course in a constructed language, or conlang) can access a Klingon language course for free via the Duolingo website. It will be made available on the iOS and Android apps at a later date. The course is under license by CBS Consumer Products.
Duolingo adds French and German to its short story library
Six months ago, language learning service Duolingo introduced new mini-morsels of content called Stories. They walked users through short tales that would ideally be more organic than scripted conversations. Today, the service announced it's expanded beyond Spanish and Portuguese by adding 20 Stories each in French and German.
Duolingo podcasts are a casual way to learn a new language
Duolingo is moving beyond gamifying language learning and into podcasts. The first season focuses on simple-to-understand Spanish-language stories. But they aren't fiction. The first episode is about a boy who loves soccer (football to the rest of the world) and his local Mexican team getting promoted to Division One. The podcast has a NPR feel to it, which is probably because it's hosted by Martina Castro, who co-founded the broadcaster's Radio Ambulante series.
Duolingo adds Mandarin course to its language library
Online language learning company Duolingo has finally added a Mandarin course to its offerings. With more than one billion speakers, Mandarin is the most popular language on the planet, but it's also on one of the hardest to learn, which is why the course will prove a little beefier than its European language counterparts. English speakers will learn the language's characters as well as the four tones of Mandarin, with lessons structured by themes such as greetings, food, health and sports.
Duolingo brings its flashcard learning app to Android
Duolingo launched an app called Tinycards last year to help you out on subjects other than languages. Unfortunately, it was an iOS exclusive until it came to the web a few months ago. Now, the flashcards app is finally available on Google Play, giving millions of Android-only users around the globe access to its interactive lessons. They will also be able to access the 200,000 custom decks created by veteran users, which include a wide range of topics, including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Star Wars trivia. If they can't find anything that suits their purpose, they can always make their own sets, as well.
