We use the selfie camera on our smartphones up to 40 percent of the time, yet most testing puts the emphasis on the rear camera. To address that issue, DxOMark has introduced scoring for front-facing smartphone cameras based on criteria like skin tone and color accuracy, sharpness, contrast, exposure and more. A number of cameras have already been tested, and the models on top, by a wide margin, are Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 and the Google Pixel 3, both with overall scores of 92. Rounding out the top five were Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3, the Apple iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, with scores of 84, 82 and 81 respectively.

DxO Labs, maker of the DxO One camera attachment and PhotoLab, FilmPack and ViewPoint photo software, has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection, PetaPixel reports. The company did so on March 7th and DxO Labs says it's now undergoing a restructuring of its business. "We are very confident that this procedure, which should not last for more than a few more weeks, will not affect our customers in any way," the company said in a statement. The bankruptcy won't apply to the camera testing and rating company DxOMark, which was spun off from DxO Labs last September.

Google was quick to brag about the original Pixel's camera prowess last year, and it's continuing with that confident stance now that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are here. Both phones use the same 12-megapixel rear camera, and have received an unprecedented overall DxOMark test score of 98 -- that's four points higher than the previous leaders, the Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. If you ask Google, it's a combination of the hardware with its computational intelligence.

Like it or not, DxOMark is currently the go-to tester for smartphone camera quality. Companies will even base their marketing around its scores. As such, it's a big deal when the outfit declares a new winner... and it just declared two. DxOMark has given Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 an overall score of 94, putting it in a tie for the lead with the iPhone 8 Plus. No, that's not going to trigger endless fan wars, is it? Of course, diving into the scores reveals that the devices reached their scores through different means.

Google has revealed the specs for its new Pixel smartphone's 12.3-megapixel rear camera and they're pretty impressive. For starters, its 89 score from DXOMark makes it the "best smartphone camera" ever, the company says, and brings it close to a dedicated compact camera in terms of sharpness and color accuracy. The relatively large sensor and smallish megapixel count yields a big 1.55-micron pixel size, meaning the camera will be good in low light too.

Another voice has been heard from in the chorus of those praising the cameras built into Apple's newest smartphones. DxO Labs, a French-based software company that maintains a website of technical measurements of lenses and cameras, has given the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 cameras the top ratings of all mobile devices. The DxOMark scores of 82 for both phones bested the competition, with Samsung's Galaxy S5 and Sony's Xperia Z3 and Z2 in the third through fifth spots with a 79 score. Apple's iPhone camera technology has improved drastically since the iPhone 4, which is in the 25th spot on the list with a score of 50. The new, faster autofocus on both phones captured the attention of the DxOMark Mobile team, which referred to the video autofocus as "very fast, accurate and repeatable. Best ever tested by DxOMark Mobile team, at the time of testing." Other pros for the iPhone 6 cameras include "attractive color rendering", "good detail preservation outdoors and indoors", and "good performance with flash." On the negative side, DxO noticed some noise in low light conditions, and ghosting and fringing with the iPhone 6.
