Nexon's super-popular MMO Maple Story is celebrating its third anniversary with a slew of new content. Among the new items and events players can look forward to are the ability to temporarily become a monster, a series of special Maple weapon drops, Boss Clones combat, the new Yakuza-themed region called Showa, and a unique Maple Story Anniversary Hat.But perhaps best of all, a rampaging attack by the cake-based monster called Big Puff Daddy! No longer will his people be oppressed, devoured at will simply because they're delicious! (Note: while we do not have a photo of BPD, chances are good that it will look nothing like the photo to the right) If you're a member, enjoy the new content. If not, now would be a great time to join![Thanks, Robert!]

Today is the last day of Children's Week and here is a Gallery Walkthrough of the Stormwind City quest chain. This completes our Children's Week set of galleries: Dornaa's Quests (Shattrath Children's Week quests, Alliance-side) Salandria's Quests (Shattrath quests, Horde-side) Grunth's Quests (Orgrimmar Children's Week quests) Randis's Quests (Stormwind quests) Having done all of the quests, I am very disappointed in the Stormwind quest chain. It involves much more traveling and much less lore than the Horde equivalent. My favorite pet is still Sleepy Willy, but I think they are all pretty cute.Who was your favorite orphan and what was your favorite reward?%Gallery-22336%

  • It came from the Blog: Mother's Day event

You are cordially invited to join It came from the Blog for a very silly event on Mother's Day. We are going to pay tribute to the women who brought us into this world by going to the place where she is mentioned daily: The Barrens. I know, she's not exactly mentioned with respect there. But the thing about Ur Mom jokes is that they are jokes. No one in Barrens Chat has actually met your mother, let alone done that with her. And it's time we exact a little revenge for our dear mothers and show that they (and we) have a sense of humor about it.So go to Zangarmarsh server and make an Orc Female with a name that includes some form of "mother" in it. I made one named Mutti, which is the German word for Mommy. No, I'm not saying my or your or anyone's mother looks like an Orc Female. And I don't think my mom ever sported a belly shirt, let alone a mohawk and a nose ring. These females will not be representing the way your mom looks, but instead her inner warrior (or shaman or whatever).More details are after the jump.

On May 14th, San Francisco's Rock-It Room will witness the second coming of the Second Life Musician Showcase, featuring not one, not two, but seven Second Life musicians in the flesh. On the roster for the evening are Keiko Takamura, Melanie Keller, Hailey Bailey, BabbleGrabble Swindlehurst, Pato Milo, Jacopo de Nicola, and ZeroOne Paz.The previous show was a huge success, with the event simultaneously streamed into SL. Bravo to the Rock-It Room for the vision to host the event, and wishes for a great evening of fun and great tunes. For those local to SF, there will be a $5 cover, and the rest of you will likely be able to check out the stream. Contact Hailey Bailey in-world for more details![Thanks, Lisa!]

  • Jason Priestley wants to throw down in some Mario Kart with you

Following up the kind gesture of offering you a free lift, Nintendo has informed us that one and all are invited to the Nintendo World Store in New York City for fun and games this Saturday from 2 - 6pm, one day before the game releases here in North America. But, Nintendo, we have to ask: why not just hold the event on Sunday or let folks pick up the game then, on Saturday? Seems like it wouldn't be too fun to head on down for the festivities, try the game out then have to return back to your life for 24 hours before you can buy it.Still, it should be a fun shindig going down at the Nintendo World Store. They're going to give out personalized Mario Kart licenses, as well as hold a tournament where the winner can take on (and, we assume, whip the ass of) actor and driving enthusiast Jason Priestley. Just, uh, don't ask him what Dylan is up to these days.See also: Fanswag: Mario Kart Extravaganza%Gallery-4772%[Via press release]

  • HTC throwing UK bash on May 6 -- but what does it mean?

    by

    04.08.2008

So HTC's holding down London on Tuesday, the 6th of May for some sort of product reveal that's presently cloaked in mystery. The invitation invites us to "witness the next wave of HTC Innovation," so it's gotta be good, right? One possibility is an unveiling of the Dream, the rumored device that hopes to usher in the Age of Android with a bang; we're not so sure, though, since the first production devices to run Google's everything-killer platform aren't expected until the second half and there's still plenty of work left to do on the software side. Another plausible launch would be the spiritual successor to the Touch, a device that may be either the Diamond or the Raphael; the 3G-less Touch is getting a little long in the tooth, after all, having been outdone in the spec sheet by its keyboarded cousins. We're guessing HTC's going to be staying pretty tight-lipped about this one right up until zero day, so let the speculation run wild in the meantime.

For gaming enthusiasts who enjoy a good minor league baseball game every now and then, we'd like to turn your attention to the Xbox 360 sponsored Family Fun Fest that is traveling the great U.S. of A. this Spring. The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest is an event that is currently touring the country, where minor league baseball attendees can partake in family fun. Family fun playing Xbox 360 games including Rock Band, GHIII, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Burnout Paradise and, of course, MLB 2K8. Again, the Family Fun Fest will be traveling to stadiums on the minor league baseball circuit through August, so be sure to check out the schedule to see if you'll be able to experience 360 gaming while attending a baseball event. We're also hearing rumors that the Xbox 360 crew is giving out free hotdogs and Cracker Jacks to all the top Rock Band performers ... but that's just a rumor.

Englewood, a GM on the Tournament Test Realm, poised for some pictures today with the WoW Insider Arena Team covering the event. We were all pretty psyched to find us all teleported right outside Dalaran, with Englewood, to pose for some pics. He was in his Brutallus getup, and was lookin' pretty sweet. Thanks Englewood! It looks like the Blizzard staff is dwindling down on the TTR, and I've got a raid to run off to in 30 minutes. So while our live coverage is wrapping up, expect to see lots more commentary and analysis over the next few days. And of course, the best part of the day for all of us was all you fans - I was getting so many tells at points I couldn't keep up! Thanks for saying hello!

Three accomplished musicians with regular gigs in Second Life will be bringing their music to San Francisco on March 12th in the Rock-it Room. Melanie Keller, Cylindrian Rutabaga, and Keiko Takamura will be bringing the Real to their previously virtual shows. Additionally, this event will be streamed into SL by way of the Friends of the Urban Forest, an organization that helps Greenify the environment by planting trees. Their sim will host the stream for those who can't make the event in SF. For those of you who've never seen a simultaneous SL/Real life event, it's worth the cost of admission alone!

  • Lineage II's Bunny Money event

    03.05.2008

NCsoft has something funtastical (see what I did there?) in mind to celebrate the coming of Spring in Lineage II. According to their press release: 'Adventurers all across Aden and Elmore will soon be able to travel to the curious shores of Fantasy Isle (sans the long swim), where its diminutive inhabitants are celebrating the season with a new event called Bunny Money!'They don't say what the event actually entails (you'll have to visit their homesite on March 7th to find that out), but some of the prizes are S-grade armor, high-grade Soul Crystals, shadow Agathion bracelets, and more! If those sound enticing to you, you'll still have to wait until Friday to find out how you'll get them. Call me a nostalgist, but when I read the words 'diminutive inhabitants' in the same sentence as 'Fantasy Isle', all I can hear in my head is 'Da plane, boss! Da plane!'

  • TR players take PvP up a notch

    by

    03.03.2008

In lieu of a more structured PvP system like the one the developer's have promised in future patches, some Tabula Rasa players have taken the initiative and decided to start their own community event on the Pegasus server. Dubbed "The Supremacy Circuit," the tournament will take place over five weeks and will feature four different tiers of combatants based on level. The tiers go by a strict level cap of 15, 30, 40, and 50 for each respective tier. On the designated nights, participants assemble in their teams of four and go at it in the Irendas Penal Colony.Registration will remain open until March 29, giving you plenty of time to level a character to your desired tier. The actual circuit doesn't begin until April 5. Players are allowed to field hybrid characters, though each team is restricted to a single character of any one class in their four active participants. No word yet on what the prizes will be for the winning team in each tier, though it probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch to expect a good chunk of in-game cash, and if the developers pay attention, perhaps even some berets as well. Planet TR has a sub-forum specifically dedicated to the event, so head on over there to find out more detailed information and sign up.

  • Apple event confirmed for March 6th for the "iPhone software roadmap"

It's confirmed: Apple's next event is scheduled for March 6th, next Thursday. It'll be a Town Hall event; obviously new MacBooks and MacBook Pros aren't to be expected, but the unambiguous "iPhone software roadmap" and the image above should help guide our assumptions as to what will be discussed. The SDK's a given, but "exciting new enterprise features," eh?

  • GDC08: An evening with Will Wright minus friends (video)

I applied for, and received an invitation to 'An Evening with Will Wright and Friends', held in Mezzanine, a swanky club in San Francisco's SOMA district on Thursday evening. I didn't know what exactly to expect, but I knew two things: 1) It wasn't going to be about Spore, and 2) It was Will Freaking Wright. How did I know Spore wasn't on the offering? 'Cause we're all kind of Spore'd out, aren't we?I was right about the lack of Spore, but was pleasantly surprised and gratified to hear Will speak on a variety of topics -- James Bond, cosmonauts, Gilligan's Island as the predecessor of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman comics, Godzilla, Care Bears, Lost, Walt Disney, Battlestar Galactica, Spiderman, and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance -- before finally wrapping it all up with the observation that the stories that resonate with us are deconstructible; we can reduce them to components, and using those components, build our own stories. Finally, accepting questions from the audience, I asked him what advice he'd give NASA as they create their MMO. His friends never showed up, but man, Will Wright is always worth a listen. He knows his stuff so well and is such a wonderful speaker ... check out the video I shot after the break, and you'll see what I mean.

  • TR's Chinese New Year late?

    by

    02.07.2008

Earlier last month the Destination Games crew announced that they'd be honoring the Chinese New Year in Tabula Rasa by sticking some black, blue, orange, yellow, and red fireworks in the pack of every member of the AFS in good faith. I was looking forward to seeing the mini fireworks shows that were bound to spring up in Foreas Base and all the other big player hubs. So you can imagine my confusion when I log on today and find no goodies waiting for me! Was the Chinese New Year delayed?Sort of, it would seem. I logged onto my new Forean hybrid and started going about all the newbie motions in the Forean Wilderness when I spotted GM_Bellum putting on a little fireworks show around the Alia Das waypoint. He wished me a Happy Year of the Rat and traded me some fireworks. I asked him when the event was starting, as the original announcement had pegged the event for today, February 7th. He said he'd just jumped the gun a bit with the fireworks, and wandered off. By all indications, I would assume that they'll announce the celebration tomorrow, as Fridays have always been their favorite day to announce things.

Well wishes are in order for the newest addition to Sony Online's family of Massive games. Vanguard turns one year old on January 30th, and the dev team is celebrating with in-game goodies for the players. Essentially, every character will be able to choose their one-year anniversary gift by deciding which of the game's three 'spheres' they want to explore.Adventurers will want to grab Avarem's Messenger Bag, which is not only a handy backpack but increases the running speed of the user. Diplomats will grab for Jansan's Valise of Ages, a satchel that increases their Presence in the diplomacy mini-game. Crafters, finally, will go for Silius' Enchanted Utility Pouch. Another container, this will increase the base crafting attributes for those who carry it.Veteran Vanguard players can expect to see titles entering the game soon, allowing folks who have stuck it out the entire time to show their Telon pride. The developers plan for there to be cake available in-world on the day itself, as yet another thank-you to the tried and true adventurers sticking it out in the little game that could.

Lighthouse, the always affectionate community manager on the City of Heroes boards, has put out a loverly call for CoX couples. That is, they're looking for CoX players who've met significant others in the online space and have taken it to the next level in what one might refer to as "real life." As far as details, all he's asked for right away is a brief story of how you met including the role that CoX has played in your relationship, the names of your main characters, your server, and a couple of brief character bios.If you're lucky, they might just include you in the press materials that they're cooking up in anticipating of their Valentine's Day event. In the announcement, Lighthouse alludes to some rumors that there may be a marriage afoot (I'm thinking cross-faction perhaps? Though I'm no CoX lore expert) in anticipation of the holiday. They're looking to include these player stories alongside their own carefully woven tale of affection. So if you met your shnookums on a Task Force, let them know![Update: Confused Lighthouse's gender with Ex-Libris'. We still think Lighthouse is cuddly though!]

As reported here and here, Orange Island is committed to bringing Second Life residents great events and content, centered around the creativity of its users, and the Art Week event currently taking place is no exception. On the roster for Thursday and Friday are RacerX Gullwing's fireworks display, and musician Grace McDunnough with something intriguingly named 'musimmersion'.I heartily applaud the vigor with which the Orange team has entered SL, and the continued excellence of its events. This is the sort of thing we like to show off to naysayers of the platform. It's all about building community, guys. The wacky avatars, the wild buildings, the controversial animations, those are all merely window dressing. It's the people that makes SL unique. Check it all out here.[Thanks, Adri!]

  • Last weekend for Trick or Transmutation event in Lineage 2

This past weekend saw the first round of key drops for Lineage 2's Halloween event, this year called Trick or Transmutation. The event, which tasks players with hunting down lost keys to mysterious treasure chests, is a loot-centric affair with some quality rewards.Players must find keys dropped by monsters, which can then be used to open treasure chests containing special crafting items. These items can be combined to create Philosopher's Stones, which in turn hand out unique rewards like scrolls, potions, and special hats.Killing monsters to obtain the keys is the first step, and if you didn't participate in the event last weekend you're going to want to jump on it this week. The second 'key drop period' begins on November 2nd at 7:00 PM EDT and ends on November 5th at 12:59 AM EDT. The Alchemist's Servitor NPCs that are integral to the event are only around until November 6th, so don't wait if you want a chance to get one of those swanky hats.We mentioned this event along with the rest of NCSoft's Halloween events a few days back.

  • New cards and big tourneys at Darkmoon Faire Philly

We didn't have anyone on hand to head out to the WoW TCG Darkmoon Faire in Philly this past weekend (although I was able to make the Chicago stop earlier this year), but worry not if you didn't make it, because the web guys over at Upper Deck's official site did a bang up job of covering all the activities over the weekend. From player tournaments to all the different decks that were played with, they've got the whole thing online, top to bottom. This was apparently the first event where the Fires of Outland set was playable, so they have a good piece up about that. And they even showed off some new cards, including a Dreamstate card from the March of the Legion set due in November.Upper Deck has also posted a preview of the cards coming in the special Feast of Winter's Veil giftset, and it is kind of funny to see that the (once-)dreaded AV snowball has received a card of its own. And Mistletoe is in the game as well, taking two player heroes out of their turns for a little "let it snow" action (while giving them both a new card to play with). Fun stuff from the TCG, whether you're a diehard collector or not.
