Listen, we've just got to say thanks. We got shown some serious love at our Tokyo reader meetup this week, and we're not only really grateful for the 200+ readers who came out to hang out with Engadget (and who took a ton of photos and almost 100 videos), but for the variety of guests we had, including Mr. Yamamitsu (CEO of Thanko), who participated in a live interview, as well as the "lightning talks" round of hackers, homebrewers, modders, researchers, and all around Japanese über-geeks. So, much love to everyone who came out and helped make our Tokyo event pop off!P.S. -Oh, and check out some videos after the break. And stay tuned for further details on the SF Engadget reader meetup this week.%Gallery-8202%

  • HTC to unveil Windows Mobile lineup at upcoming press event?

    by

    09.25.2007

While Apple chose London to inform the world of the iPhone's international agenda, HTC is reportedly looking to make a few announcements of its own on that side of the pond. According to TheUnwired, HTC will hold two press events on the first two days in October, the first of which will be in the UK and the second in Germany. Best guesses suggest that we'll be learning a bit more about the firm's forthcoming Windows Mobile-based lineup, and we can only hope that the Kii, Omni and / or Polaris are part of the show -- but considering the location and all, we wouldn't bet the farm on hearing too much about the likely US-bound Juno. Hold tight kids, the events get going in under a week.

Engadget fans in Tokyo, San Francisco, and New York! We're scheduling our next round of reader meetups in your cities, but we need your help in finding a good spot. Likewise, if you have a space and you're willing to hook us up, please get in touch (email event at engadget dawt com). We'll do our best to make it worth your while. Here are the dates we're looking at: Tokyo - October 4th (we're expecting this one to be relatively smallish), more here for our Japanese audience San Francisco - October 10th (we're figuring a few hundred) New York - October 29th or 30th (also figuring a few hundred)

  • Steve Jobs in Berlin tomorrow, France on Thursday?

    09.18.2007

Now, we know how hot-under-the collar you guys get when we note El-Jobso's movements in Europe, but news is news, people. Just as speculated yesterday, it appears that the Apple honcho is working his way across Europe, moving nation-to-nation to spread the good word of iPhone wherever his New Balance touch ground. Not content with just launching the device in London for the O2 network, the company is taking this show on the road, traveling to Berlin on Wednesday where Jobs and his turtleneck will supposedly announce a partnership for the iPhone with T-Mobile. Expect EDGE, lots of screen touching, and Steve saying, "OH-, eine weitere Sache." Then, as we hear, it's off to France for some sightseeing. Just kidding... about the sightseeing.[Thanks, Floris]

Listen folks, if you had even a slight bit of concern that tomorrow's "Mum is no longer the word" announcement from Apple was going to be anything less than monumental, you can now put those fears to bed. Steve Jobs, AKA El-Jobso, AKA the Jobs-man, AKA Jobbers is in London as we speak, undoubtedly standing in front of a full length mirror and practicing saying, "Oh, one more thing," with a fake British accent. You have been warned: there will be at least one human being in England tomorrow wearing stonewashed jeans and your dad's turtleneck.

  • Metaliveblogging the "Beat Goes On" event

    09.05.2007

The reporters are there. The Apple Store is down. The rumors have been spread. And now it's time for the Apple Event you've all been waiting for. We're not actually there (I'm in my cozy apartment in Chicago's beautiful Wicker Park), but we are watching everyone who is there, and we'll be metaliveblogging everything we see. Here's who we're watching: MacWorld, Engadget, MacDailyNews, the Mac Observer, Ars Technica, Slashgear, The Utility Belt, The Apple Gazette, and Stuff. So why press F5 on all those windows when we'll do it for you for free, and provide entertaining commentary all the while? The liveblog starts right after the jump, and stay tuned for updates. Today is all about iPods (and maybe even the Beatles), so let's do it.Update: It's over, and wow the iPod got a lot of love today. Don't forget that we'll be discussing everything that happened on tonight's talkcast. See you on Talkshoe tonight at the special 9 pm ET start time, and bring all that iPhone pricing rage along with you.

  • No Beatles at next week's event?

    by
    Mike Schramm

    08.30.2007

No Beatles next Wednesday? Like pretty much everyone else, I figured the whole "Beat" goes on thing, not to mention that the third Beatle got added to iTunes recently, all pointed to next week's event as not only showing off new iPods, but Beatles music to play in them (and I wasn't the only one-- mockups are all over the place). But now the rumor mill (so, again, grain of salt with all of this) says it's a no go on the Beatles. There will be a new iPod, and supposedly a brand new Ringtones system will be brought to the iPhone, where you can use iTS purchased music as a ringtone, but we won't actually meet the Beatles. Then again, no one really knows but Apple-- Gruber speculates that since the event is being held at Moscone West, McCartney will be on hand to play live. And let's be realistic-- even though there is evidence for both a new iPod and the whole ringtones thing, no one's really sure what's going down anyway. So, as usual, we'll have to wait until next Wednesday to find out (or at least until next Tuesday, when the New York Times confirms what blogs have been saying all alone). What do you think? Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Unfortunately, TUAW wasn't able to send any of us to San Francisco today (rumor is that McNulty cleaned out the petty cash to buy an iPhone for himself just so he could play NES), but we've got the next best thing-- like true Apple faithful, we're liveblogging the liveblogs. So stay tuned for updates, live from my apartment here in Chicago, on what's happening at the Apple campus in Cupertino. If you want to see it straight from the source, we'll be watching Engadget, Mac Rumors, Gizmodo, SlashGear, Mac Observer, Stuff, and Macnews.de. I've also got a tab open refreshing the Apple Store, just in case it goes down-- as of this writing, it is open for business just went down at 12:50pm EST. Sure, you could watch all those sites yourself, but why not settle down on this post and let us do it for you? Think of it as one-stop shopping for all your liveblog news. The event itself starts in about 10 minutes, and our liveblog kicks off right after the jump. Save the Mini!

    08.02.2007

It's the day before BlizzCon, and the WoW Insider team got the chance to stand amongst the throngs to get our badges. The challenge was, of course, that the lines themselves were crazy, wondering out the door without much organization. The mood in the convention center can be described as calm expectancy. I expected more excitement, but I think the ordeal of waiting in such long lines wore the excitement right out of us. Tomorrow we'll be out there in line, looking for more shining faces, and bringing you all the latest. For now we sit waiting for the meet up to begin.

LG pushed the "masterpiece" line to the limit at this night's Christie's Auction House product showcase -- the official tag line of the event was "LG Masterpieces, a Celebration of Technology and Design" -- but we came away with a few pleasant device announcements and got to chat with some fancy tuxedoed men wearing white gloves, so we'd say the evening was a success. Check the gallery after the break to glance at all the product on display, or just read the posts below to catch the new stuff.%Gallery-5060%

  • X07 isn't happening, UK will get own non-Euro event

    by
    Alexander Sliwinski
    Alexander Sliwinski
    07.19.2007

We had X06 last year, so one would naturally think the European Microsoft event, which has existed since 2001 (let's not talk about 2004, k?), would give us the next digit and we'd be up to X07 -- alas, it is not to be. Aaron Greenberg says there will not be an X07 this year and that they've got something else in store. There's still no word on what this means for the Euro Xbox faithful, but GI.biz received a statement from an Xbox representative confirming that there is no X07. The rep said they're "looking at doing something here in the UK. It will be from a UK point of view, not from a European point of view." And all the Americans in the room cover their mouths like little school girls and try not to laugh. What does that mean, a "UK point of view"? This UK-fashioned event will apparently happen before Father Christmas shows up. So, what about the rest of Europe, should they expect an impressive showing at Leipzig or is MS making their stand in the UK against the PS3 and Wii armies marching across Europe? A "UK point of view"? Really ... did they really say that?[Via X3F]

  • Hands-on with Sony's VAIO TZ superultraportable notebook

    by
    Evan Blass

    07.17.2007

Obviously unaware that we're not exactly the classiest folks around (we were the only ones there wearing shorts and a T-shirt), Sony invited us to a decidedly swanky "product unveiling" at Rockefeller Plaza's 66th floor Top of the Rock observation deck, replete with such pricey fare as caviar, salmon canapes, crab salad, tuna tartare, and grilled shrimp, along with four varieties of champagne (from a 2000 Veuve Clicquot Reserve Rose to a 1996 Bollinger R.D., if you must know) to wash it all down with -- and as if that weren't enough booze, several bottles of well-aged scotch sat prominently atop a fully stocked bar. This whole luxury theme was meant to sway our coverage about reflect the high-end status of the company's 11.1-inch VAIO TZ, whose $2,200 minimum price tag gets you a waif of a Santa Rosa-based ultraportable featuring a carbon fiber exterior, 32GB SSD, WWAN in the form of EV-DO Rev. A, and a MacBook-style keyboard, among other goodies. Sorry to cut this short, but we're off to shower and shave with the pleasant smelling men's products that Sony stuffed in our gift bag (we gave everything else -- cigars, lip balm, four dollar bottled water, book on wine -- away to elevator operators and people on the subway), so this would probably be a good time to check out the gallery below. And, as a special, one-time only bonus, we've also included photos of the recently announced VAIO-branded LF-V30 LocationFree streamer, whose component jacks enable HD place-shifting, and with which the entire VAIO lineup will soon be compatible thanks to pre-loaded software... %Gallery-4973%

While not as well stocked as Samsung's event today -- or as cleverly named -- Belkin hit NY today to show off its 2007 product lineup. We're loving us that Wireless USB, and the N1 Vision is just the right amount of over-the-top, but you aren't getting any of those frumpy cases in between us and our scratch-free iPhone just yet.%Gallery-4751%
