Unlike a lot of the landmarks in Fallout 3, the Vegas strip in Fallout: New Vegas mostly survived the apocalyptic meltdown of America in tact. Sure, the roads are a bit scarred and the buildings could use some paint, but it's all there. Vegas, baby!

Man, deciding who to support was pretty easy in Fallout 3. The hardest decision you had to make was "do I want to blow up this entire village or not?" If the developer diary for Fallout: New Vegas below is any indication, these decisions are going to be a little ... thornier this time around.

ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Game Studios (Fallout 3, Oblivion) and id Software (DOOM, RAGE), has received a $150 million investment by Providence Equity Partners. This is a "supplement" to an earlier investment of $300 million by the firm, made back in October of 2007. The money will be used to make games (duh), expand publishing operations (figured), and for strategic acquisitions (... interesting). Since Providence's previous investment, ZeniMax re-established the Fallout franchise in the console space and purchased id Software. Along with obtaining several hallowed franchises from the id acquisition, the company also nabbed John Carmack's technical expertise, which now grants Bethesda-published games exclusive use of id Tech 5.

Direct2Drive is pushing an awfully hard bargain to nab your business -- provided you're planning on purchasing Bethesda's upcoming apocalyptic RPG, Fallout: New Vegas. The digital retailer is offering pre-orders on an exclusive "Digital Collector's Edition," which includes a 48-page digital graphic novel titled "All Roads." The comic, created in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics and penned by Bethesda's Chris Avellone, tells the backstory of the town of New Vegas, and sets up the plot of the upcoming game. If digital comics aren't your thing, pre-orders of the Collector's Edition also come with the "Tribal Pack" -- a DLC pack which adds a handful of relatively primitive weapons to your arsenal, including a machete, doses of venom and throwing spears. Those sound ... nice. Just fine. We're going to stick with our gun that shoots mini nuclear warheads, though. But thanks, all the same!

Now, you may not know this, but in Fallout: New Vegas, you don't play as somebody who's just emerged from a Vault. Shocking, we know -- instead, the game's story has a far more sinister and dark opening involving attempted homicide. Learn all about it in the dev diary just past the break.

Bethesda rep Matt Grandstaff notes in a spoilery PS blog post that Fallout: New Vegas' version of the wasteland is "a dangerous and desolate place." Like Fallout 3, New Vegas is filled with companions to help you endure the journey. You can find their images past the break and more info here.

A 12-page preview of the Fallout: New Vegas - All Roads comic is now available on iTunes, but if you end up liking what you read don't expect to buy the full thing off of Apple's virtual store shelf. The graphic novel is a prologue to events in the game and is "exclusive" to the Fallout: New Vegas Collector's Edition. The un-interactive text adventure is published by Dark Horse Comics and written by New Vegas' senior designer, Chris Avellone. The comic also apparently gives "clues to in-game missions for the sharp-eyed reader." Now we totally want Where's Waldo: Fallout Edition.

Still, we're resolved to get past this and offer you this aid: Achievements. Xbox 360 Achievements has the skinny on all of the new game's cheevos, so head on over and check 'em out. You gotta get your mind off it, guys, lest you go insane.

Fallout: New Vegas features robot sex. We know you prefer a little bit of easing into the main thesis of our news articles, but there's just no way we could contain our excitement for this delightful development. The ESRB rating for Obsidian's desert-crawling action-RPG explains, "there is also an extended sequence suggesting (no depiction) sexual activity with a robot." Said erotic automaton will drop bon mots such as "Fisto reporting for duty . . . Please assume the position," and "I suppose I should test you out . . . Servos active!" On the off chance you think we imagined this bold, innovative feature in some sort of fever dream, you can read the full ESRB description. Or, for a vaguely NSFW look at how this adult subject might be implemented in the game, we suggest turning your attention to The Whitest Kids U' Know.

  • How Ellen DeGeneres got Matthew Perry his role in Fallout: New Vegas

Who should ex-Friends star Matthew Perry thank for landing his latest job, a role in Fallout: New Vegas? Not his agent. According to senior producer Jason Bergman, Perry's role was cemented thanks to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. On the April 24, 2009 show, Perry appeared not only to promote 17 Again, but he also gave Ellen an Xbox 360 system with a copy of the game. "I played this video game so often that I injured my hand so severely that I had to go to a hand doctor and get injections in my hand because I love this video game so much," Perry told Ellen at the time. "The game is called Fallout 3. I'm not affiliated with this game at all, I just love it. But I signed it, so it looks like I created it." Apparently, that act earned him the good graces of Bethesda and Obsidian, leading to his eventual casting as Rat Pack-esque character Benny. With his name now cemented in the game's credits, he'll able to give away signed copies of New Vegas ... and actually have it mean something.

War. War never changes ... and neither will the narrator for the intro to the next Fallout game, either! Ron Perlman has been tapped to do the voice work on Fallout: New Vegas' introductory cinematic, once again regaling us with the tale of post-apocalyptic America and introducing us to the game's main character: you. For the sake of potential spoilerz, we're going to go ahead an embed the audio past the break. Oh, and sorry non-Americans -- you likely won't be able to access the player.

When I played Fallout: New Vegas at E3 earlier this year, I got the impression that it was basically more of the same -- there was the same faction-based open-ended gameplay as Bethesda's acclaimed Fallout 3, the same VATS-flavored first-person shooting, and the same dialogue-driven story, albeit in a new setting. After playing through about the first 90 minutes of New Vegas, however, I think I might have been wrong. I don't think it's exactly the same as its predecessor. I think it might be better.%Gallery-99357%

  • Wayne Newton, Felicia Day lending voices to Fallout: New Vegas

Narrators. Narrators never change. Yes, of course Ron Perlman will be featured in Fallout: New Vegas, but you might be interested in hearing about the cadre of other famous folks lending their voices to the forthcoming Obsidian-developed RPG. Wayne Newton will play radio DJ "Mr. New Vegas," while Matthew Perry will voice "Benny, the head of the Geckos family." Felicia Day is handling the voice of "Veronica, a sarcastic Brotherhood of Steel scribe." In addition, From Dusk 'Til Dawn favorite Danny Trejo will give his gravitas to "a third playable companion," hilariously named "Raul the Ghoul." Kris Kristofferson, Michael Dorn, William Sadler, John Doman, and Rene Auberjonois make up the rest of the star-studded list. We're not quite sure which one is the biggest celebrity -- and thus can't predict which character will disappear after the first ten minutes. It was so much easier when we were dealing with Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart!

  • Japanese Fallout: New Vegas ad pokes fun at JRPGs

In a fairly cheeky Japanese advertisement for its upcoming open-world action-RPG, Fallout: New Vegas, Bethesda Softworks assembled a group of mock protesters who have some mock concerns with a few JRPG tropes. Andriasang provided translations to some of their crudely-fashioned signs, which display such complaints as "when did games become something that you watch," "what's the point of playing again if there's no change to the story," and "I think it would be nice if the main character had a mission aside from just wiping out evil." It's a pretty clever advertisement, but we wonder if Bethesda has considered the possible repercussions. Like, for instance, Square Enix could run a similar advertisement where like, five million Dragon Quest IX players hold up signs which simply say, "yeah, so what?"

What more do we need to say? We'll be heading back into the future '50s world of Fallout, sculpted by Obsidian, on October 19 in the US and October 22 in Europe. In case you hadn't already seen in the recently released E3 trailer, the Las Vegas ... er, New Vegas setting is positively packed to the gills with seedy characters. So it's a lot regular ol' Vegas then, but with more Geiger counters.

Finally! Actual gameplay footage of Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas surfaced in the latest episode of GTTV, and unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like Fallout 3. If it weren't for the bright lights of the casinos, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference. This E3 trailer is cut to make New Vegas look more like a FPS, but pay attention, and you'll see some VATS action as well.

  • The Fallout: New Vegas box art is stoic

We struggle to find anything else to say about the Fallout: New Vegas boxart that's been revealed via the Bethesda Blog. Depicting a single New California Republic Ranger standing alone (you know, the guy from the first trailer?), he wields his pistol, presumably ready for any ne'er-do-wells lurking. Or maybe he's just showing his gun to us? We can't imagine it's very impressive, what with all the sand in the post-apocalyptic desert. Of course, if the regular edition of the game doesn't do it for you, don't forget there's a collector's edition you can snag for $79.99 on PS3 and Xbox and $69.99 on PC -- or about 7,162 bottle caps.* *Note: Please don't mail bottle caps to Bethesda.
