Financial services firm Fidelity is making a move towards cryptocurrency, announcing a new company that will handle crypto investments for large-scale clients. The new company, Fidelity Digital Asset Services, will manage both trade execution and cryptocurrency custody for its investors, which, for now, will include hedge funds, endowments and family offices. "Our goal is to make digitally-native assets, such as bitcoin, more accessible to investors," Fidelity Investments CEO Abigail Johnson said in a statement. "We expect to continue investing and experimenting, over the long-term, with ways to make this emerging asset class easier for our clients to understand and use."

Fidelity Investments announced in May that it would soon let its clients view their bitcoin and other cryptocurrency balances on its website, provided it was stored on Coinbase. Embracing unregulated cryptocoins was seen as a bold move by the brokerage company, and certainly uncommon among financial institutions. Today, Fidelity made good on its promise: Once users authorize the site to access their data from Coinbase, they can check their bitcoin savings.

  • My pointless quest to achieve perfect retro console fidelity

It all started about four years ago when I came into an old Sega Saturn system from the mid-90s. It was an entire console catalog that I completely skipped over back in the day. I hooked it up to my TV and soon I was knee-deep in classic fighting games like Street Fighter vs. X-Men and shoot-em-ups like Thunderforce V. The low-poly art style was gorgeously retro, but I quickly realized that the image was stretched and distorted on my HDTV. I Googled "retro console fidelity," and that's where it all went wrong.

  • Amazon's Echo speaker guides you through workouts

Amazon must want to help you fulfill your New Year's resolutions, since it just updated the Echo speaker with a handful of features meant to get your life in shape. To begin with, you can ask Alexa to start a 7-minute workout -- the voice-guided cylinder will coach you every step of the way. You can also get your investments on track thanks to a Fidelity feature that tells you how individual stocks are doing. And if you're more interested in how political leaders fare this year, you can ask the Echo when the next Democratic or Republican debate will take place. The additions won't change your life, but they're definitely cheaper than visiting the gym or a financial guru.[Image credit: AP Photo/Mark Lennihan]

  • SpaceX is a $10 billion company thanks to Google

The rumors are true: SpaceX has just secured a billion dollars' worth of funding from two new investors, Google and Fidelity. As a result, both Google and Fidelity own about 10 percent of the company and SpaceX itself is now worth approximately $10 billion. The reason behind the investment? Well, beyond just funding Elon Musk's private spaceflight missions, Google would also be investing in SpaceX's latest endeavor: internet satellites. The satellites are said to be small, low-cost and plentiful enough (Musk wants to deploy a total of 700) to offer affordable and fiber-like fast internet to everyone on Earth and even Mars. Of course, Google is itself interested in making the internet accessible to remote parts of the globe -- hey, the more people using Google, the better -- so the investment should bring good things for both companies.

Well hello there, I'm Augustus Q. Moneybags, inventor of the word "Funtrepreneur" and thrillionaire owner of Military Industrial Complex LLC. Now, I may be an internationally loved businessman, y'see, but that doesn't mean I'm too good at calculatin' those ol' numbers, y'see. Now, however, I don't have to, since I've been using this software from the nerds over at investment bank Fidelity that runs on those Oculus Rift doohickeys. Strap it onto your face and you're magically transported to a world of skyscrapers, each one representin' a stock in your portfolio, y'see.

  • Fidelity Market Monitor app brings stock alerts, news and fanciful financials to Google Glass

You know, it makes sense: an app for the one percent, tailor-made for a $1,500 headset. Fidelity's Market Monitor app for Google Glass might just be the most impressive program to debut for the device, particularly considering the class of individual who would take advantage. In the trading world, missing an alert or notification by even three seconds could be the difference between million and millions, with this app enabling Fidelity customers to request real-time stock quotes and receive alerts dealing with companies in their portfolio. In a concept video describing what's possible (embedded just after the break), we even see a wearer snap a photo of a Google logo, and the app translates the photo into a stock quote for GOOG. We're guessing that it's only a matter of time before every other financial institution follows suit, which will likely lead to each and every CNBC anchor wearing a set whilst on air. Also, we're hearing from a "reliable source" that both Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf will be joined by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Wall Street: Glass on Glass on Glass.

I'm going to honest with you, dear reader, I know next to nothing about stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. This blogger's little mind just can't wrap itself around financial matters, but our friend's at Fidelity Investments make it their business to help fools like me. Today, Fidelity has launched the Fidelity Market Monitor for the iPhone (and your iPod touch too!).The Market Monitor is a web app that lets you track 25 stocks or mutual funds, gives you access to charts, stories about those stocks on Fidelity.com, and the ability to click a link and call Fidelity (in case you have a hot stock tip you must act on right away). This differs from the iPhone's stock widget in both the source of the stock information, and the added bonus of links to related Fidelity news posts. Does that make it better than the Stock widgt? That's up to you to decide, I'm too busy gathering some money to buy a bridge in Brooklyn from this nice guy I know.

If you are like me and have a burning desire to check on your stock portfolio compulsively throughout the day, there are many options in the world of Dashboard widgets, Apple's own included stock widget amongst them. But I just downloaded the Fidelity Market Monitor - a natural since I have accounts with Fidelity - and I'm really digging it. The widget lets you personalize your watchlists, track your stocks and stay current on the latest symbol-specific and overall market news and conditions. It loads fast and is very easy to customize. It's easy on the eyes, too. Did I mention it's free? Well it is. Bulls and bears alike should be pleased. Update: Alternate link download link. Thanks, Hadley!
