Files by Google (formerly Files Go) is helpful if you want an official means of managing the files on your Android phone, but there's been an obvious limitation: you couldn't move files to physical storage beyond the phone itself. You won't have that issue from now on. Google has released an update to Files that introduces support for external storage using USB On-the-Go. If you want to offload photos to a thumb drive, you won't have to track down third-party software.

Most of Google's products are still banned in China, but the tech giant has slowly been introducing (and re-introducing) some of its offerings in the country. Its latest release is a China-specific version of Files Go -- the Android storage management app that can help people free up space for low-end devices. As you might know, the app was originally created for use in developing nations, but it was so well-received that it was eventually released worldwide. Since Google Play is still banned there, though, the big G is making Files Go available through third-party Chinese app stores, including Baidu's, Xiaomi's and Huawei's.

Google has filled a big hole in its Android system by releasing Files Go!, its mobile file organization and sharing app. Launched in beta last month, the app makes it easier for Android users to free up space, find files, back them up to the cloud, and share them with other smartphones, even offline. It's one of the linchpin apps of Google's Oreo 8.1 (Go edition), a slimmed down version of Android meant for the less-powerful devices in developing nations.

A few days ago, Google briefly published a new app called Files Go on the Play Store. It was quickly removed, but it looked to be a file-transfer app focused on the Android Go initiative that Google announced back at I/O earlier this year. Today, Google made things official -- Caesar Sengupta, VP of Google's "Next Billion Users" team, tweeted that the app was again available "for a few more" users.

Google has a history of working on apps and services for more rural, data-lacking locations around the globe, like its mobile wallet for users in India and a search-lite app for Indonesian folks. Now, according to a now-pulled app on Google Play reported by 9to5Google, the company is testing a new Files Go app. According to now-pulled Play Store images, the app is intended to transfer files wirelessly, even without an internet connection, much like Apple's AirDrop tech.
