  • Far Cry Instincts: as good as it gets--for now?

Last night I got to spend some time with the new Xbox version of Far Cry, known as Far Cry Instincts. First off, let me point out that I've never played the original PC game nor seen it in action. So, for me, Far Cry Instincts is a brand new experience-but I'm sure veterans of last year's PC version will have a much different opinion (please share your thoughts in the comments section). As beautiful as Instincts is, it really calls to attention the Xbox's aging hardware. Maybe we've been spoiled with next-gen screens and pre-renders, but my first reaction was, man, what would this game have looked like on the Xbox 360... But then reality set in, and I began playing Instincts for what it is, an Xbox game.

  • Doom 3 Super Edition in the works for PS3?

In a recent GameInformer interview, John Carmack hinted at developing a "super [awesome] edition of the Doom 3 stuff" for the PlayStation 3. No other details were stated-indeed, this is very much just an idea-but we're curious about Carmack's choice of the word stuff. If we do see a PS3 Super Edition in the future, will it be a tired port with a making-of DVD tacked on? Or will we get a unique experience using "Doom 3 stuff"? Interestingly enough, Carmack also told GI that he prefers developing on the Xbox 360. [Thanks, JamesO]

  • New Enemy Territory: Quake Wars details

The creators of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are hard at work on their next project, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, based on the upcoming Quake 4 game. The online tactical shooter will take advantage of both the Doom III engine and a new "megatexture" technology developed by John Carmack. With this new technology, the Splash Damage team will be able to render environmental terrain all the way out to the horizon and also assign different physical properties to the various types of terrain. For example, asphalt will be louder to walk on but offer better traction for land vehicles, while sand will make your footsteps quieter but at the same time will bog down vehicles. And don't expect every map to be located in the desert. Quake Wars is set to take place across Earth, so we should see some temperate and jungle environments in the mix. We'll keep you posted.

Every developer makes their in-development game look better to the public than it actually is. The Killzone 2 discussion going on in the community right now is that the "gameplay" footage is questionable. Is the hardware really able to deliver that kind of gaming quality? If not, is it it false advertising? My bottom line is that all three consolers had a chance to put their best foot forward and Sony's stride was stronger. Even compared to MS' best cutscenes, Killzone is a killer. But there are other titles wowing the crowd now. Enemy Territory is one of them. The game clip is, once again, playing on an obscenely beautiful screen the size of my apartment. It stops you in your tracks in a room where everyone is trying to get you to stop in your tracks. The Quake spin-off is being developed by Splash Damage, using id's MegaTexture engine. It's a tactical shooter with 40 vehicles and enough character classes to kill your buds seven ways to Sunday. Details are a little sketchy right now. We all know that means it's early in development. Of course, that didn't keep them from releasing one of the true must-see clips of E3 2005.

Yes, we know, it's a port of one of last year's biggest letdowns, but heck, it sure looks pretty-in that N64 sorta way. And we're sure all of you DS owners would welcome a (semi) mature-themed FPS. That is, if you're not tired of Pokemon Dash or Rayman DS yet... [Thanks, Andrew]

  • GoldenEye: Rogue Agent. Be the bad guy.

It's all very well fighting the forces of evil and being the good guy, but the fact is very few games allow you to be the bad guy. Coming down the road for PS2, GC and Xbox, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent lets you play... Well, can you guess from the title? Yes, that's right. A rogue agent. In the early part of the game, you're booted from MI6, and wind up working in and around the Bond underworld, meeting such legendary Bond villains as Dr. No, Goldfinger and Scaramanga (AKA The Man with the Golden Gun), as well as playing with Pussy Galore. The game is looking good, and hopefully will make a pleasant change from playing that annoying do-gooder, 007.

The first screenies that came out for Goldeneye: Rogue Agent were pretty impressive. You could see the warts on the guys' faces. The PR spin that oozed out was filled with promises of physics and facial expression implementations that would blow us away. Now, to be fair, these are only screenshots, so it's hard to judge. But we'll judge anyway...What the hell happened? These are mediocre at best, and remind us more of a first-generation PS2 title than a next-generation Bond game.

Head over to the IGN media pages to get a look at the entire second level of GoldenEye: Rogue Agent. The mission unfolds at Auric Enterprises, Goldfinger's mountain stronghold, which is under attack from Dr. No and his henchmen. As Goldfinger's ally, it's up to you to stop the invasion. But don't worry, you're character comes well equipped...

Growing industry heavyweight, Ubisoft, has acquired the King Kong license. The Peter Jackson (remake of) King Kong license. The game will be released alongside the movie in December of 2005 on "all platforms". There's an impressive staff behind the project, starting with the production team-headed by Michel Ancel-that was responsible for the last year's stellar action/adventure title, Beyond Good & Evil. Working in collaboration with this team will be Ubisoft's Montreal studio (Splinter Cell & Prince of Persia), along with Jackson's own Wingnut Films production company. Ubisoft promises that the game will allow players to "experience all the power, drama and emotion of the film". We'll keep you updated.

Superstar DJ, Paul Oakenfold, has agreed to compose an original score for EA'a upcoming sequel Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. Oakenfold has been featured in several other games, including 2001's Frequency and EA's upcoming installment of FIFA. In other news, Judi Dench ("M") & Christopher Lee ("Scaramanga" from The Man with the Golden Gun) have signed on to voice their talents for the project. Rogue Agent is due out November 15.

  • Two clips for the next James Bond game

The next installment in the exceptional James Bond series, Goldeneye 2: Rogue Agent, gets a couple of clips on Xbox Advanced. The game is going to go out on a limb and place the famous character on the other side of the railroad tracks, letting us play Bond as a bad guy. The premise is risky and the graphics are great - a good start, as the game moves into preview/marketing mode. The clips you can download include a Fort Knox scene, where you'll probably fund your rogue operation. You also get a great looking Hong Kong scene. What modern Bond yarn would be complete without a scene in Hong Kong?

It's doubtful the original James Bond license-holders would have allowed this game to be made. Goldeneye: Rogue Agent is a game based on the premise of 007 being kicked out of the agency, due to his Uncoventional methods. The title flaunts the byline, "Why save the world, when you can rule it?" So you know we're in for an alternative reality experience. While the game looks like it implements some intriguing graphical upgrades (notice the detail on Q's face in the vid), we can't help but wonder if the premise is a little too risque - in the wrong way.

  • Valve does a little two-step

Gamers don't like to be dicked around. When thieves stole the source code for Half-Life 2 a number of fans set out to find those responsible. If the guys in custody are actually guilty then it's fair to say hell hath no fury like a gamer scorned. But perhaps Valve should watch their step, as well. The game company keeps a tight hold on their properties which includes keeping their games out of cybercafes. Turns out a cybercafe that offers Counter-Strike has been informed they are to pay Valve for use of the license. No warning from Valve that the cafe should stop offering the game. No courtesy call. Nothing. You could call that hardball or you could call it thin skin, but it definitely reeks of a bad taste. Is that any way to thank the gaming community?
