  • No demo planned for Gears of War 2

Epic fans hoping for a little pre-release Locust-slaying action will be disappointed to hear that no demo is planned for Gears of War 2. The first taste of the roadie-running action title will have to come when the full version is released sometime in November.According to associate producer Tanya Jessen, producing a demo takes valuable time out of a game's development cycle, and with a two-year turnaround for Gears 2 a demo was simply not feasible. The first Gears of War also lacked a demo version, and with recent reports that demos aren't as great as publishers think they are, we have to trust that the folks at Epic know exactly what they're doing.

  • There are no plans for a Gears 2 demo

There goes another bit of the UT3 tease. ShackNews has confirmed that Epic has nothing in the pipeline regarding any Gears of War 2 demo. Like Halo 3 before it, the big holiday Xbox release has plenty of hype on its own to sell well. Plus, as Epic notes, creating a demo removes that much more from design, QA, production (and more) from the main game's development. They are, of course, correct, further noting that the game's two year production cycle would have made a demo even more difficult for Epic to pull off. *Sigh* All for the best we suppose.

  • Rein: GoW2 Game Informer details just a 'tidbit'

According to Epic's Mark Rein, the juicy Gears of War 2 details that came straight from the pages of May's Game Informer are only the tip of the GoW2 iceberg and only a "tidbit" of what the Gears sequel has to offer.Commenting on the Game Informer article, Rein told videogaming247 that Epic "told the Game Informer guys just a tidbit about the game. We showed them some stuff, obviously, but we're keeping a lot of information back that will make people go, 'It's even better than this.' As good as they say it is, and they really, really like it, there's still a lot of story to open up between now and when the game ships in November... I think people will really enjoy this game."So ... can we officially start the GoW2 hype machine yet? Mr. Rein says there's more juicy bits to come and our excitement level heading into E3 is at full alert. Ah heck with getting permission, the GoW2 hype machine is GO, GO, GO!

Gears fans, we hope you didn't book a flight to the New York Comic Con just yet, because all that talk about Gears of War 2 being shown there ... well, it doesn't look to be happening. If you recall, earlier this week a press release was sent out on behalf of Comic Con that mentioned Epic's Michael Capps and Joshua Ortega would be in attendance talking Gears and giving a first glimpse of GoW2. But now, according to Videogaming247 who contacted Epic about the Comic Con news, Mark Rein is denying that GoW2 will be shown at the event saying that "I'm not aware that we're showing anything there." Sounds like a big ball of confusion to us. Since the whole GoW2 Comic Con unveiling isn't going down, maybe we can strike a deal with team Epic and allow them to unveil GoW2 right here on X3F. It's the least we can offer as hardcore Gears fanboys.

Thanks to a nifty and well versed press release, today we learn that this year's Comic Con (which will go down April 18th through the 20th) will get an additional injection of video game content with Gears of War 2 taking center stage.Scheduled to take the floor at this month's New York Comic Con, Epic's Michael Capps and GoW2 script writer Joshua Ortega will talk about Gears' origin, its success and give attendees a "glimpse into this year's upcoming Gears of War 2". Whether or not that means actual in-game GoW2 footage or just talking bits, we aren't sure. But our fingers are crossed in hopes that we get a GoW2 video tease come April 18th. We're sure Capps won't let us down.

Some Gears of War 2 news just hit the wire a little while ago (we've been itching for some) with word from Microsoft telling us that two new GoW2 videos from this year's GDC are available for download off of the Xbox Live Marketplace. Both videos are available for download in high definition, one being the Unreal Engine tech demo we featured a while back (meat cube and all) as well as a behind the scenes video where Capps and Cliffy B do a quick shout-out prior to GoW2's announcement at GDC. We're taking Cliffy's advice and already have our bucket ready for this November's release.

John DiMaggio, the voice talent behind Marcus Fenix, chatted with IGN about a little upcoming game called Gears of War 2 and during the interview, let slip a few interesting game details. DiMaggio confirmed that not only will GoW2 feature new weapons and brand new characters (as expected with any sequel), but also confirmed that there will in fact be a Brumak battle. The same Brumak style encounter that was pulled from the 360 version of Gears but was later added to Gears PC. And we say, thank you Epic! Finally Xbox 360 owners get to experience some hot Fenix versus Brumak action. Now just make sure it isn't a disappointment.

While making our daily internet rounds we stumbled across an intriguing little survey that's posted over on GearsofWar.com asking fans' opinions on a few Gears related questions. The survey (which can only be accessed using a Windows LIVE ID) is ever so interestingly titled "GOW 2 Survey" and asks various questions about a player's likes, dislikes and favorites regarding the Gears franchise. Questions including "What's the best OMG moment from Gears 1?", "Which multiplayer mode dominates your time online?" and "Which Delta Squad member would you want to have your back?" And it's quite obvious to us that Microsoft and Epic want your opinion on what makes Gears so special and will probably use the data gathered to make Gears of War 2 more of teh hawtness. Data that will hopefully tell them we want more Torque Bow, more Boomers (their "BOOM!" chant is hilarious) and more Seriously-style achievements. Go and give your input.

We just had to share one of Ctrl+Alt+Del's latest Gears of War 2 inspired comics, because A) it caused us to have a good belly laugh and B) they actually have a great idea for how to make GoW2 an amazing sequel. We'll let you read the comic for yourself, but the premise for it is pretty simple. How does one make GoW2 better than the original when they've already added a freakin' chainsaw to the end of a gun? Well friends, there is a way ... oh yes, there is a way. Bad language ahead, choo-choo!

Update: Thanks to zizzy, we've posted a better, lengthier video showcasing Epic's entire presentation. And not only does the water look hotter than ever, but the Unreal Engine's new destructible environments, beefed up lighting, high density crowds and cube of meat are equally as hot. Man, will GoW2 benefit from destructible enivornments ... simply amazing!Today, Epic Games showed off the latest build of their hella popular Unreal Engine 3, showcasing the engine's latest additions and enhancements. Their tech demo video complete tech demo video (embedded above) is a real-time, in engine demo of the Unreal Engine's latest feature, Dynamic Fluid Surfaces. And we'll be the first to jump on the Dynamic Fluid Surfaces bandwagon, because this water is HOT! Hot in an "omg that's amazingly hot" kind of way. Even better is the fact that Mr. Marcus Fenix is used to demo the new water effect which pretty much means that A) we're looking at Gears of War 2's engine in the flesh and B) GoW2's water is going to be freakin' hot! Just look at that water ... so delicious.[Via Joystiq]

  • GamePro's GoW2 article isn't an announcement

    02.04.2008

Over the weekend, we told you about GamePro's mysterious Gears of War 2 mention on its upcoming March cover and how mysterious the whole thing is. You'll also recall that we were a bit skeptical to how newsy GamePro's GoW2 mention really is, seeing that any huge announcement like GoW2 becoming official would, at the very least, garner a huge cover spread. And now we find out that we were right to be pessimistic.Epic's Mark Rein hopped on the Gears of War forums to tell everyone that Epic has "not announced a sequel to Gears of War to Gamepro or anyone else for that matter" and that the whole thing "is complete nonsense". So, we're guessing that the GoW2 mention on GamePro's cover is nothing more than a speculative article, maybe what they want or expect GoW2 to include "if" it were made. Back to waiting for our official GoW2 confirmation ... GDC anyone?[Thanks, Hooligunn]

Oh, Gears of War 2, how we yearn for news about thee. Your presence has been long awaited, we've reserved a seat for you at the dinner table every night, but you still refuse to make your existence known. So, when we heard news that GamePro magazine was proudly showcasing your GoW2 name across its cover, we couldn't help but get tickled from within'. We thought, would GamePro be your tool for revealing yourself? Was this magazine our vessel for learning everything about you? Would you, GoW2, finally accept our dinner invite after your GamePro debut? Then, suddenly, we realized that GamePro's GoW2 teasing is probably nothing more than that ... speculative teasing. An announcement as large as yours is guaranteed to be a cover story (sorry RSV2), not a little mention on the side margin. Oh well. We'll see what GamePro says about you, our friend GoW2, when it hits newsstands February 12th. But we have a feeling your secret will still not be known and you still won't be at the dinner table. We'll set a plate for you anyway.[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]
