  • Self-driving taxis may be the key to cutting greenhouse gases

    You may think that self-driving cars are mostly useful for reducing accident rates and freeing your time, but they might just help save the environment, too. Berkeley Lab researchers have published a study which suggests that switching the transportation grid from conventional vehicles to autonomous electric taxis would cut greenhouse gas emission levels up to 90 percent by 2030. While the clean EV powerplants would play a large part, the switch away from privately-owned cars that would make nearly as much of a difference. A big key would be "right-sizing" trips -- since you'd usually just need a tiny car to get around, you could avoid getting into a big vehicle until it's necessary. The base data doesn't even include some of the efficiencies that are inherent to robotic cars, like optimized routes and closely-packed traffic that cuts wind resistance.

  • Climate change deal has 194 countries cutting emissions

    Deals to reduce greenhouse gases (such as 1997's Kyoto Protocol) have been in place for years. However, they've typically limited the reductions to richer nations -- poorer countries have objected to previous attempts to broaden the scope due to requirements they see as burdensome. At last, though, a truly global deal is underway. A total of 194 United Nations member states have agreed to submit plans for emissions cuts, with those who are ready delivering their plans no later than March. The terms have countries setting emissions targets beyond their "current undertaking," and wealthier countries will support less fortunate counterparts that are "vulnerable" to financial losses stemming from climate change. Should everything go according to plan, the UN will have a full-fledged pact within a year.

    It's easy to talk about carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their effect on our planet, but visualizing them? That's hard. Thankfully, NASA has stepped up to the plate with a computer model that shows how CO2 travels across Earth's atmosphere in the space of a year. As you'll see in the clip below, a lot of gas in the northern hemisphere originates in major pollution centers across Asia, Europe and North America before it drifts across the globe. The abundance of plant life in the spring and summer quickly cuts down on CO2 levels, but the chemical comes roaring back once fall arrives -- and the concentrations are higher than NASA would like to see.

  • IBM, others develop GreenCert greenhouse gas meter

    It's already developed a "gas gauge" for its servers, and a greener means of recycling silicon, but IBM now looks to be taking its increasing environmental awareness to an even larger scale, with it, Enterprise Information Management, and Evergreen Energy developing a greenhouse gas meter that promises to measure the carbon output of various industries and devices, according to IDG. Dubbed GreenCert, the software employs a whole mess of IBM tools including various WebSphere applications, along with an "engine" designed by the folks at C-Lock in order to take a snapshot of a particular company's carbon footprint. It then does it's thing again after the company's taken measures to reduce its carbon emissions, giving them proof of their reductions which they can use to get carbon emission credits that can be traded on the carbon market. The software won't be available in its final form until sometime in the first half of 2008, however, but those looking to get a jump on things can apparently get a beta version from C-Lock right now.
