We love this new ad from Japan, because we secretly hope our parents will react the same way. A Japanese family walks into an electronics store, and is amazed by the visual quality of Gran Turismo 5. The dad is startled to find out that he's not watching a TV program -- but a game. He stands, amazed in wonder of the awesome power that is the PS3. Honestly, wouldn't it be so cool if your folks had the same reaction?

  • Best in Show at GT Awards gets immortalized in Gran Turismo

The Gran Turismo Awards are a pretty neat ordeal for car enthusiasts across the world -- not only do you get to show off the hard work you've put into your cars, but you can get awarded for having the most impressive one there. What sort of awards? The title of "Best in Show" is pretty nice, but getting your car featured in a Gran Turismo game? That's nothing short of spectacular. The winner of the 2007 GT Awards was a 2007 Audi TT, submitted by Marcel Horn. Last year's winner was a 1960 Corvette, which you'll find in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and it looks excellent. You can check out the video above to see what the GT Awards are all about, or you can check out some pictures of the event and drool over some awesome rides. Your call.

It's okay, you don't have to say a word. We know exactly what you're thinking. "Please, PS3 Fanboy. Can I see some more Gran Turismo 5 Prologue screenshots?" Ask and you shall receive, for we have a load of new screenshots just waiting your eager eyeballs to peruse over them. To mix things up a bit, we've snuck a photograph taken at a racetrack into the gallery. First person to find it wins a grand selection of prizes which, sadly, don't actually exist. It will be a fun exercise in futility, nonetheless. The gallery can be found below - go and have a look.%Gallery-9694%

During TGS, we had the opportunity to visit the studios of Polyphony Digital and meet with the man behind the Gran Turismo series, Kazunori Yamauchi. We had just finished watching a demo of their video-on-demand GTTV service – which was announced during a Japanese-press only event at TGS the preceding day – and got to poke around their studios (check out Gamespot's fancy video tour) before sitting down with the man himself. We talked about GTTV (of course), the current status for Gran Turismo on PSP, how they reached the elusive 1080p goal, and if their PSP/PS3 connectivity ideas are any better than a rear-view mirror. %Gallery-4884%Thanks for taking the time to meet with us and show us the game and your studio. It's very much appreciated. Could you explain the rationale behind releasing GT5: Prologue before releasing the full Gran Turismo 5?So there's basically two reasons behind GT5 Prologue. First one being, as we move with the franchise to a new generation of hardware, the PS3‚ and trying to extract the maximum out of it and being comfortable, it's already taken us three years to get to a point where we're almost happy with what we're delivering on the system.

A newly announced collaboration between Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Polyphony Digital and BBC Worldwide will see the broadcaster's popular motoring show, Top Gear, distributed through Gran Turismo TV. The online channel, expected to launch on the PlayStation Network during 2008, will host 40 downloadable episodes of the Jeremy Clarkson vehicle snobbery-fest.An added bonus resulting from the agreement is an in-game replica of the Top Gear Test Track, bound for the PS3 installment of Sony's driving sim, Gran Turismo 5. You'll be able to experience "every white knuckle, hairpin turn," whether or not you're rambling into a camera about how the unnervingly attractive car makes you feel. If you haven't done so already, you can coax the Japanese PSN into giving you the GT5 Prologue demo while you await the final game's release.%Gallery-9051%

Japanese racing fanatics (and international racing fanatics with Japanese accounts) can rejoice. A demo for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is coming to the Japanese PlayStation Network on October 20. Given the futuristic nature of the country (it's currently early morning Friday), that's less than 24 hours from this time of publication.According to the press release (via Rocket Punch Auto Blog), the trial includes seven cars and one course (Suzuka). There is no online play but single-player races for up to 16 cars. Video service Gran Turismo TV will also be included with reports from 40th Tokyo Motor Show. No word on a demo release outside of Japan. GT5 Prologue is due out this year next year, according to the official PS blog.%Gallery-4884%

  • Can you tell the difference between GT5 and real life?

The graphical line separating video games and real life has been getting thinner and thinner with each passing console generation, and the Gran Turismo series always seems to be the one leading the charge. Harnessing the PlayStation 3's graphical power, Gran Turismo 5 features the most realistic graphics to date. So real, in fact, that many people can't tell the difference between an image from GT5 and its real-life counterpart. To prove this, a Neo GAF forum member created a quiz featuring screens from GT5 and GT5 Prologue that will have you staring inches away from your monitor trying to discern the difference.Take the quiz, and see how you do![Via NeoGAF]

  • Gran Turismo 5: your new car dealer?

    10.02.2007

In addition to causing mouths to drop and tongues to roll on the Tokyo Game Show floor, Gran Turismo 5 has some pretty big plans, it seems. Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about his vision of the future of GT5, as well as confirming the game's ability to hold a steady 60fps while delivering full 1080p content. Yamauchi also expressed his relief at rumble returning, as he felt it was crucial in games like these. What we saw at TGS, the new My Page and TV Mode, were the big hitters and demand a little more discussion. The My Page is fairly straightforward, adding a personal element to the gaming experience. You get to customize your car on display as well as the background. That's all fine and dandy, but the top of the screen has a band that really brings in the online capabilities of the game -- worldwide weather forecasts and an interactive buddy list that shows your friends as glowing dots on a globe, akin to the users spotted using folding@home. The TV Mode is where things get interesting. This channel will allow you to see car-sporting events rarely seen, like the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (now called Super GT). Car manufacturers will get video content to you through this mode as well, but Yamauchi won't stop there! He plans to ultimately allow virtual test drives of the manufacturer's cars, with a real dealership spokesperson in the "passenger seat" telling you about the car via voice chat. If you decide to actually buy the car, for real, that can all be done through the Gran Turismo dealership -- you'll still have to go and pick up your new car though. Strange stuff, huh? Would you buy a car based off of a virtual test drive?

Click to enlarge Tucked away, quietly, within the pages of Sony's TGS press catalog, is the final pricing for the Japanese release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Now scheduled for December 13 (as indicated by Famitsu earlier this week) the game is listed as ¥4,980 ($43.10) on Blu-ray and ¥4,500 ($38.95) for the downloadable variant. Though the game features many of the functions of the full product – scheduled for a 2008 release – it's still considered to be a sampling, in part intended to "keep people aware [Polyphony Digital is] still around" (as told to us by the game's designer, Kazunori Yamauchi). We're not sure if this price will extend to the European and North American releases of GT5 Prologue, but we've asked Sony for clarification.

OK, try to keep up with us. This is Game 3.0 at it's finest. So, you know Gran Turismo 5 right? Well, there's this thing called Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. GT5P is a demo for GT5, not to be confused with Gran Turismo HD, which was a demo for ... we don't know, how big the PS3's brain is or something. OK, so it was recently revealed in Famitsu that GT5P will be released on Dec. 13 in Japan, though no release date has yet been set for the U.S."But wait," you say, "I thought that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was coming in October!" Well, sorry to disappoint you, prom king, that's apparently the demo of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. So, to recap, the demo for the demo (that's not the other demo) will be out in October, but the demo itself will be out in Dec. 13. Glad we could clear that up. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got to go punch a crippled kitten.%Gallery-4884%

We're having a very hard time just choosing which Gran Turismo 5 garage image to use for this post. They're all so dynamite. We're finally catching more glimpses of cars outside of Ferarri's, which is nice since we're almost to the cars normal people can afford. Nothing quite like driving your car, or the car you'd like to reasonably get, around a track like a total badass. Since you wouldn't do that for real, right? Well, from our limited knowledge of cars, it seems these pictures feature the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, Nissan Skyline, Ferarri Whatever (does it matter? It's a flippin' Ferarri), the GT-R (fill in the gaps), an Alfa-Romero, Audi TT, BMW Z4, and some ugly maroon car. Enjoy the pictures![via PS3Forums]

Sony Europe has announced that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be out this year as both a traditional Blu-ray release and as a PlayStation Network download. The game will feature 40 cars. Racing locations noted in the press release include Eiger Nordwand, the London City Track and Suzuka. As previously discussed, Prologue will feature 16-player online matches. Unsurprisingly, the game will run at 1080p and 60fps, though the replays will only play back at 30fps. Also mentioned in the press release is Gran Turismo TV, a channel for the PlayStation Network that gives access to "a world of great motoring TV programming online."No details have been announced as to whether the Blu-ray release will, like Warhawk, contain extra content. If Prologue isn't enough for you, the full Gran Turismo 5 is due out in 2008.%Gallery-4884%

Too much Gran Turismo? Maybe. But we can't help but admire the potential that we see in Gran Turismo 5, Sony's next-gen follow-up to the famous GT series. Beyond just the graphics, we're excited by the gameplay, all of which can be seen on display, narrated by the team at Polyphony. Enjoy the video -- it might be the last you see of us before we start playing Warhawk.

According to the Gamespot, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will arrive as a free downloadable title on the PlayStation Store later this year. If this is true, Prologue will largely expand upon the previous free GT download, Gran Turismo HD. Prologue adds more cars and tracks, and a slew of new features, such as a new "TV" mode. The TV option will provide users replays and videos from manufacturers. A great Game 2.0 3.0 nod would allow users to create their own replay videos and share them with their friends through the PSN.A new "Home" mode will allow greater integration with the upcoming online service. "The goal is to create as seamless an experience between the game and the Home service as possible."Just like the PS3, the goal is to have Prologue constantly evolve through updates. "It's possible that additional improvements, such as damage modeling, could be a part of a future update to the game somewhere down the line." Certainly, exciting -- hopefully, we'll find out more as Tokyo Game Show draws nearer.%Gallery-4885%

Supposedly, the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will support DualShock 3 -- at least according to a NeoGAF retelling of Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation. This has sparked discussion that the controller featured on the official GT5 website (pictured above) is actually a DualShock 3, not a Sixaxis. But honestly, we all expect the rumble-enabled PS3 controller to look identical to our current Sixaxis controller. A silhouette won't tell us much.Hopefully, we'll find out something at Leipzig later today.[Via Joystiq]

  • Lots of Gran Turismo 5 details translated out of love for you

    08.05.2007

If you've been itching for some Gran Turismo 5 news to gawk at, let us direct you to a thread over at NeoGAF. Not only are there a lot of great screenshots from the official website, but user Doctor_No took it upon himself (or herself!) to translate the latest Famitsu interview with Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi. We'll detail the finer points below, but all of them are worth looking over. GT5 will be playable at Leipzig, where multiple online features will also be announced. GT5 Prologue will be Home compatible! While called Prologue, Yamauchi says there will be options to make money, buy cars, etc. In the final build, there are ambitions to let you walk around a "town" and look at cars. We imagine this means your Home avatar checking out other people's GT5 cars. GT5 Prologue will have 40 cars and 4 tracks, totaling 8 configurations. If you use a steering wheel for the game, you can look around the cockpit in cockpit view by moving around the D-Pad. Nice. In the full game of Gran Turismo 5, you can fully customize the interior of the car. Right now, 16 cars are in each race, but in online modes, the number may shrink to 12. Any money, cars, etc. you earn in GT5 Prologue will be able to transfer over to the full Gran Turismo 5. Wow! This really seems like an ambitious title, so we're salivating to get our hands on the game as soon as possible. GT5 Prologue is rumored to launch on October 24th, so we'll wait until around then.

The latest Famitsu magazine (via 1UP) features an interview with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue producer Kazunori Yamauchi where he discussed the upcoming racer's online aspect.Prologue will feature integration with PlayStation Home, where you can reach the top menu of the game from inside Home (and vice versa, you can reach Home through Prologue). Each player will have a page that loads with background imagery. Yamauchi plans to also include a friends list here and a weather feature so that "other players will know which geographic location you are in and how the weather is there."No downloadable cars or courses will be made available. Yamauchi plans for 40 cars and four courses with eight different layouts to make it to the final game. Save data from Prologue can be carried over later to the non-prologue Gran Turismo 5 for use. Sixteen-car races are being planned for offline mode, but that number may drop to 12 for online play.Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is due out in Japan this October.
