  • Three points of view on Grand Theft Auto 5

Los Santos, a sub-urbane simulacrum of the auto-dependent Los Angeles, is the foundation for Rockstar North's next big heist, Grand Theft Auto 5. The studio's job is to create, not acquire: build the biggest playground yet, and fill it with more, more, more things to do. The first thing we do is jump out of a helicopter. The mountains and snaking rivers below almost obscure the fact that there's a city just around the corner. Serenity is a rare quality in Grand Theft Auto, though I know the parachute is precursor to an inevitable descent into mayhem. Later, protagonists Trevor, Michael and Franklin clear out an armored van in the dead of night, having blocked its route with a stolen truck. The police start arriving en masse, in waves, and Rockstar shows me the ease at which you can switch between your criminals. While Michael and wheelman Franklin are pinned down behind cover, you can leap into a manic Trevor and snipe from a distant tower. The elaborate shootout demonstrates refinements in motion, combat and cover, Rockstar says. The driving is supposed to feel better too – another sign of the expected trajectory of improvement of the Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar North aims to improve its monster of a game at every known level, from motion-captured walking animations and gunplay, ambiance, writing, and story-driven activities outside of the main plot. I haven't seen enough (or played any) to say how it all fits together, but there are three alterations that could put Grand Theft Auto 5 on your radar, even if, like many of Rockstar's subjects, you've been trying to elude a dour life.

The latest event trailers for Grand Theft Auto 5 are available now on the Rockstar site. We say "event" because the internet stops for a good amount of time when these things get posted. Grand Theft Auto 5 drives onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.We'll have the videos posted here as soon as we can. The Rockstar site currently has a waiting period of 55 minutes to even watch the clips.Update: Okay, here are all the videos in one place. Michael is above, Franklin and Trevor are after the break.

After some recent speculation surrounding a mural unveiling, Rockstar revealed the official box art for Grand Theft Auto 5 this morning. As you can see in full below the break, it does not stray far from the style introduced during the series' PlayStation 2 days. The art unsurprisingly features the three main protagonists of the game, with Franklin holding the handgun at the bottom, Trevor holding the slightly larger weapon, and Michael taking to the water. Also typical to GTA's style, in the hands of the woman on the left we can see a rather familiar-looking device...Grand Theft Auto 5 rides onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.

  • Take-Two doesn't expect its budgets to grow significantly with next-gen

Here's another good thing about this current console generation lasting as long as it has: it appears to have reduced fears over next-gen budgets, at least among some parts of the industry. Current-gen budgets have had quoted with ranges between $15 million for BioShock and $44 million for God of War 3, but Take-Two isn't planning for the next-gen of consoles – expected later this year – to be wildly different from current costs."We don't have any reason to believe our development budget will change significantly," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick on a financial call today. "If anything, we've become, group wide, much tighter in how we spend our money. It has been the challenge and we've been very focused on it. We can't say specifically, but, no, we don't expect to see a meaningful change in what it costs us to release these top quality products."Then again, it's hard to put next-gen budgets into perspective when you're the publisher of Grand Theft Auto 5. If the game's launch on September 17 incurs anything like Grand Theft Auto 4 or Red Dead Redemption's marketing, you'll have to take a trip to the Andes to avoid it.

  • Rockstar: Grand Theft Auto 5 delay for quality purposes only

Grand Theft Auto 5 has a release date of September 17, which is later than its original launch window of spring this year. Yes, this is a delay. No, it isn't because aliens beamed down to Rockstar headquarters and possessed the entire Grand Theft Auto 5 development team. At least that's what Rockstar is telling its fans:"To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they're all nonsense – literally the only reason we've delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be," Rockstar writes in the comments of its launch date announcement. When Rockstar first posted the September release date, it said, "We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time." While we study the weaknesses of your puny human race, we assume is how that originally ended.

Grand Theft Auto 5 will hijack Xbox 360 and PS3 retail on September 17, 2013. Publisher Rockstar Games says the game has been moved from its originally projected release window of spring in order to "allow additional development time.""We are very excited for people to learn more about the game in the coming months," said Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser.Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive and its investors are likely more eager for GTA 5 to launch than gamers, since the game's release is projected to deliver $600 million in revenues.

Listings for a PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 have appeared on European Amazon stores, including France, UK, and Germany. The UK and German PC listings are completely separate from the officially announced Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, but on the French store, they all appear under the same "GTA V" product heading.Rockstar has not officially announced a PC version of the game, despite the online petition begging for one. And an Amazon listing is not absolute proof of the existence of an item. That said, previous GTA games have come to PC after an initial console release.

Twas the day before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring... except for Rockstar's marketing department. This morning the developer posted several screenshots on the company's site for Grand Theft Auto 5 to elicit speculation. There's a swimming with sharks shot, along with a dog in the passenger seat of a car. Drive-by pooches confirmed?! There's also a mini submarine picture, as well as a shot featuring a commercial jet, a fighter jet and a blimp. No word yet if these are actual player-controlled vehicles for use in the game, but feel free to dream about that tonight, along with sugar plums dancing.

The online petition to bring GTA 5 to the PC has amassed many more signatures. Just two days ago the petition had 41,000 signatures and today has exceeded 100,000. The new goal is to get 150,000 people on board.Rockstar has yet to comment on the petition and has only confirmed GTA 5 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 so far. Count us among those wishing for a PC port, because GTA IV had some of the most inventive mods around.

Over 41,000 gamers have signed an online petition requesting a PC version of next year's open-world crime-caper sim, Grand Theft Auto 5.Rockstar has said that GTA 5 won't target next-generation consoles, pegging the latest in the iconic series for PS3 and Xbox 360 only – for now, anyway. Rockstar has a history of issuing PC ports a few months after console launch (save for Red Dead Redemption) so perhaps this petition will seem pre-emptive in the long run.Grand Theft Auto 5 is currently slated to launch during Spring 2013.

  • Why Grand Theft Auto 5 is sticking to current-gen systems

Rockstar isn't holding Grand Theft Auto 5 for the next generation of consoles, whenever they may appear, because the current generation is "mature" enough to handle what the game has to offer, studio co-founder Dan Houser tells Famitsu (reported by Polygon). Besides, Rockstar isn't about to let any console tell it how to live its life."Rockstar is a content company, not a hardware company," Houser says. "We use the technology we have to create content, and we try not to let ourselves get beholden to the hardware. The fact that hardware's so mature right now is exactly why we're able to go on to the next level. GTA 4 was our first attempt at a new platform and HD visuals, so the first part of development was seriously difficult. Now we know what the hardware's capable of, so it's become a lot easier to move things along and a lot more fun, too."Rockstar isn't only familiar with development for the current generation, but the consoles themselves are at their peak performance, Houser says:"GTA: San Andreas came out at the peak of the PlayStation 2's cycle, and we put out a really good game thanks to that. All the best games for a console come out at the end of the life cycle, right? So now's the best timing of all."The second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5 dropped today, starring the three main protagonists and a dog.

This is Grand Theft Auto 5's second trailer since its debut video hit the net on November 2, 2011 (yes, more than a year ago). After 12 months of pondering, guessing and asking Take-Two when GTA5 would launch, we finally got a release window of spring 2013 last month. Since then, a stream of information has revealed that GTA5 features three main characters and Los Santos is the largest open world that Rockstar has ever built.

"It was partly just to do something totally new," Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser told the Guardian about the use of three separate protagonists in Grand Theft Auto 5. "Partly, too, it was because at that point we were deep into the work on the two DLC episodes of GTA IV, and we thought, well, the bits where all the stories cross over is kind of cool, so why don't we just do that in one game? So okay, let's just do multiple characters."The storyline of the game – and remember, GTA games have storylines when you're not just trying to jump motorcycles over buildings or create impressive piles of exploded fire trucks – follows a series of five to six "mega-heists" (the Guardian's term), and three characters who are all involved with the jobs, and with each other. In fact, the protagonists spend more time hanging out together than with other NPCs, Houser said. "If you're playing as Michael and you want to play a game of tennis, you can call up Franklin and ask him. You are actually getting to see the main bulk of the story and also spend time with these people off-mission – that side of it gives it a vibrancy that's a lot stronger than with [Grand Theft Auto 4's] Roman or anyone else."

Grand Theft Auto 5 features the three main protagonists pictured above, Game Informer reports. These three serious dudes should have plenty of room to roam around in, since Los Santos, the sunny Los Angeles of GTA's universe, is the largest open world Rockstar has ever created.UK magazine ShortList reports Grand Theft Auto 5 is tackling the same brutal subject matter of infamous mobster lore, and one of these protagonists is an East Coast gangster who moves to Los Santos for a fresh start, CVG says. The protagonist is committed to go clean, "but, as in The Godfather 3 – just as he thought he was out, they pulled him back in," CVG quotes ShortList. After tense months spent waiting to hear the release date of Grand Theft Auto 5, it's finally set to launch in spring 2013. • Take-Two moving 2K QA to downtown Las Vegas

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of never-the-twain-shall-meet siblings Rockstar and 2K games, announced today that its 2K publishing label will relocate its "QA Testing studio" from Northridge, California to Las Vegas, Nevada. The move, which popped up on radar this past weekend, is made possible by a partnership between the publisher and the state of Nevada, along with the city of Las Vegas."This move will allow 2K to operate a significantly larger and more effective QA facility as we continue to grow our business across all divisions," said 2K COO David Ismailer. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman noted, "We have a skilled and talented workforce in Las Vegas that is ideal for companies like Take-Two. I am so thrilled that they will be a part of the downtown community, and I know that their presence will attract other high-tech firms to Las Vegas." Obviously, Take-Two made the move for some tax breaks. The publisher is also applying for "Catalyst Funds" from the state. The $10 million Catalyst Fund was created in 2011 and is designed to incentivize "the expansion or relocation of businesses that will quickly result in the creation of high-quality, primary jobs in Nevada." Now, before you bring up that other government-financed debacle, let's be clear that there's a huge difference between $10 million and $75 million. Also, it doesn't appear Take-Two is seeking the whole enchilada.

Now that Grand Theft Auto 5 has an official launch window of "Spring 2013," several retailers have opened up pre-orders for Rockstar's latest. You can reserve your copy through Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop and more right now.The full list is available over at Rockstar, though we'd warn exercising caution at this point. Sure, you may want to pounce because you believe Grand Theft Auto 5 will sell like crazy – it probably will – but keep in mind that no retailer-specific pre-order incentives have been revealed yet. We can't imagine playing Grand Theft Auto 5 without the right bonus outfit and car like some kind of cretin.
