Killzone: Shadow Fall is one of the PS4's launch games, developer Guerrilla Games revealed. Posting on the PlayStation Blog, Guerrilla senior producer Steven Ter Heide spilled the beans on the first Killzone entry to release alongside a PlayStation console."Today we are happy we can finally show you what we have been working on," Heide said. "It has been an amazing journey for us so far, being offered the opportunity to be a launch title for the new PlayStation, and the subsequent mild panic to figure out how to best handle all of that. But being able to now share it with you is both a scary and proud moment. We are hoping you will like what we have created, and are happy to present you with the first glimpse of Killzone: Shadow Fall."Shadow Fall will be joined at the PS4's launch by Watch Dogs, and likely also by DriveClub from Motorstorm team Evolution Studios. The LinkedIn profile of the DriveClub senior environment artist Jeremy P Miller describes the game as a "PlayStation 4 launch title." We've reached out to Sony for comment.%Gallery-179475%

  • Seeking good looks and plenty of cash in Killzone Mercenary

My first impression of Killzone Mercenary has a few upsetting implications. Developer Guerrilla Cambridge (formerly SCE Cambridge) has somehow translated the Killzone Engine to the PlayStation Vita with such fidelity that I wonder if I'll even want to go back to the isometric strategy universe of Killzone Liberation – perhaps my favorite PSP game. If Killzone 2 helped set the bar for graphics early in the PlayStation 3's life, then Mercenary has been handed the torch for Sony's handheld. Perhaps one of the best examples of the device's power, Killzone Mercenary almost seamlessly executes with sharp environments and high-quality animation. Though there is some recognizable pop-in to textures as you move through the environment, it's never jarring – even in a preview build, which I'd expect to look worse than the final game when it ships in September."The most difficult thing, honestly, was untangling all the code from Killzone 3," Guerrilla Cambridge Senior Producer Mark Green tells me about bringing the Killzone Engine to the Vita. But good looks aren't the only thing Killzone Mercenary has going for it; this game is all about the money.%Gallery-177727%

You don't need to buy the whole Killzone Trilogy to get the remastered version of the original PS2 FPS. The PlayStation Blog has announced Killzone HD will be a PSN download, available on October 23 for $14.99.We certainly don't blame you for missing the game the first time around. It launched back in 2004, and there's just no way we would have cranked up our steam cars, made the trek into town, and handed over paper money to buy a game on a disc. So much effort!

We apologize for contributing to the 'ghastly confusion.]Killzone the First was scheduled to become a downloadable PSN game in late January, but has since been "delayed indefinitely," according to the official Killzone Twitter account.Killzone franchise creators Guerrilla Games are currently working on the next entry in the series, as well as a still-unnamed "new IP."

  • Report: Sony closing BigBig Studio, linking Cambridge with Guerrilla

Sony is closing the UK's BigBig Studio right after it finished work on Vita launch title Little Deviants, following a regular review of SCE Worldwide Studios, Develop reports. The review also led to a restructuring of Sony's Cambridge studio, which will now work closely with Guerrilla Games to release a Killzone title on Vita. Sony issued a statement to GamesIndustry about the closure: "It has also been proposed that BigBig Studio should be closed. BigBig have been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since joining in 2007. However, it was felt that by focusing on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers." The number of people affected by BigBig's closure or the restructuring of Cambridge is unknown, but we hope it's tiny(tiny).

The latest issue of Edge Magazine (via CVG) reveals that Killzone developer Guerrilla Games is working on -- what else? -- a new installment in its PS3-exclusive shooter franchise. Actually, "what else" may not be a fair question to posit: The studio is still working on the new IP announced at GDC Europe last August, which is being spearheaded by Killzone game director Mathijs de Jonge. The identity of the new franchise isn't known, though studio founder Adrian Smith explained that members of the Killzone team will be lending their support throughout the game's development. We think the appearance of red-eyed antagonists is a lock.

Sony and Guerrilla Games have revealed a bit of the content included in Killzone 3's upcoming "From the Ashes" DLC, a four-map pack which will arrive on the PSN this coming Tuesday for $4.99. The pack is divided into two Warzone maps, including the deadly, deactivated Lente Missile Base; and two Guerrilla Warfare battlegrounds, such as the Mobile Factory, a gargantuan vehicle pulled from the game's single-player campaign. Check out videos of these two maps after the jump. If you haven't grabbed any of the shooter's post-launch DLC, you can also grab the new maps in the aptly named Bundle Pack, which also includes the four maps from the Steel Rain and Retro Packs for a cool $9.99. Just try to comprehend that value: For a ten-spot, you get eight extra Killzones for your Killzone 3.

After giving PSN proper resuscitation last Sunday, Sony has detailed plenty of measures to win back the loyalty of potentially lost players. This weekend, Killzone 3 players get something more than the sheer pleasure of being able to play a video game online again: double experience until Monday, May 23 at 3AM EST. Cryptically, the post concludes there is "even more" to be announced "at a later date." By "even more" we imagine Sony means "even more freebies" and by "at a later date" we imagine -- well, actually, that last one's pretty cut and dry now, isn't it?

  • DC Unlimited releases Killzone 3 action figure line

If a Killzone enthusiast wanted to recreate the action of his or her beloved shooter franchise on the carpeted floor of their living room, their only option used to be the one and only action figure that came in the Killzone 3 Helghast Edition. We suppose they could have also strapped a tiny gas mask on a Barbie and used their imagination as well -- thankfully, that kind of roleplaying is no longer necessary: PlayStation Blog has announced that a line of two new figures have arrived from DC Unlimited. The intricately decorated and articulated figures are modeled after the Helghast Assault Infantry and Helghast Sniper, and are pictured above. If you like what you see, you can grab the toys at your local toy retailer -- or on Amazon, which is kind of like a universally local toy retailer.

You've shot a man in every place, but you've run out of locations in which to shoot him. Fortunately, there's no greater marriage of domains and bullet-riddled defeat than in Killzone 3, which is set to receive a downloadable map pack after tomorrow's European PSN update. North American PSN users can expect it on Tuesday, April 12. The "Steel Rain" DLC contains "Junkyard," a Guerrilla Warfare map that'll amass even more detritus from demolished jetpacks and toppled exoskeletons, and "Stahl Arms," a Warzone map set in a Helghan weapons manufacturing plant. Between the two battlefields, you're getting a basic glimpse at the dooming, doomed life of a gun. The two-pack will be free to PlayStation Plus subscribers during the first month of availability, and will otherwise cost €4,99 ($4.99 on the US store).

  • Guerrilla considered 'on-rails version of Killzone 2' for PlayStation Move

    by

    02.08.2011

In an interview with Ars Technica about implementing PlayStation Move support in the developer's latest FPS epic, Killzone 3, Guerrilla Games lead programmer Tommy de Roos revealed that it once toyed with the notion of a motion-controlled Killzone 2. "One of the first ideas was to create an on-rails version of Killzone 2," he told the site. (We can see it now: "Killzone 2: Extraction.") What killed the idea was a simple matter of practicality. "Once we realized how much work that would be, since all encounters would have to be re-scripted, we decided against it," Roos said. While that's a valid reason for sure, maybe Guerrilla should have at least considered making an FMV light gun game out of the original, pre-rendered Killzone 2 trailer. After all, it was practically born for the part.

You've got ... way too much time to pore over the Killzone 3 reviews from front to back and between the lines -- the game's not out until February 22. But here's the secret: The quickest way to an informed opinion is to jump to conclusions, and then just read the comments below them. Got it? Okay ... Jump! 1UP (B+): "It's definitely one of the better multiplayer games available on PlayStation 3 and easily one of the best-looking games available to console gamers today." Destructoid (10/10): "Killzone 3 is the shooter to beat." Eurogamer (8/10): "Killzone 3 is a powerful, impressive game that sets an imposing standard for Sony's 3D, Move-enabled future output; it's just a shame that in doing so, it's lost just a little of what made the series stand out in the first place." GameSpot (8.5/10): "Killzone 3 isn't the game it could have been, but when it comes to capturing the madness of larger-than-life planetside battles, few games do it better." GameTrailers (9.4/10): "Killzone hasn't forgotten its roots -- it's just improved its fundamentals in every way that matters." IGN (8.5/10): "This may not be the best game on the PS3, but it's a fantastic option for shooter fans, and the type of title that non-PS3 owners are sure to envy."

  • Killzone 3 review: Third time's the harm

    by
    Andrew Yoon

    02.03.2011

The Killzone franchise has always been caught in a struggle against early expectations. The first game fell short of its "Halo killer" billing, and the next console outing had to match a lofty, pre-rendered visual "target" -- while it came close, it couldn't silence sharp-eyed critics. With Killzone 3, developer Guerrilla has no new benchmark to beat except for the one it already set for itself: be better than Killzone 2. Critics, myself included, praised that last game, even though a few turn-offs still slipped through. Killzone 3 systematically addresses every complaint voiced: the graphics have become more colorful, the story has been greatly expanded, and the controls have been tweaked to feel less sluggish. But reactionary development doesn't always work. Fixated on correcting what wasn't necessarily broken, Guerrilla has forgotten to focus on what really matters in the solo game: making it fun.%Gallery-93599%

So that Killzone 3 multiplayer beta that was supposed to open today? That ain't happenin' -- not just yet. The beta has been pushed back to the far flung future of tomorrow (beginning at 1PM ET), according to PlayStation Blog. The humanity! In the hopes of subduing your rage over this slight delay, Sony is giving away 60 "Limited Helghast Edition" copies of the game. Any player who accesses the beta this weekend will be automatically entered for a chance to win. The LE, you know, is the one with the crazy replica Helghast helmet that isn't sold in stores. Yeah, that one. Looks like our weekend just got booked!
