  • European Guitar Hero 3 release date confirmed

Those of you with your eyes out on the retailer websites will probably have known this for a little while, but Activision have finally confirmed the EU release date for Guitar Hero 3. With a release on November the 23rd, Europeans will have almost an entire month of sitting around and twiddling their thumbs while their American cousins rock out to songs like One by Metallica and Weezer's My Name is Jonas. Having said that, there's plenty to keep us busy what with the holiday season lineup. At least we're not waiting until next year like another game we won't mention. Those of you who are impatient can import the game, but we're not sure how the downloadable content will work in that case. We're currently trying to find out, so watch this space.

  • Hear GHIII's final track: "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"

After finishing "Free Bird" in Guitar Hero II, you may have thought that it could never be topped as a "final" song. Oh sure, a more difficult song, but not a more fitting song. Allow us to present to you the final track of Guitar Hero III then: "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." The Charlie Daniels Band classic has been revitalized for the game, replacing its fiddle (don't you dare call it a violin) with, well, a guitar. The guitar is played by Steve Ouimette, who is apparently better than the Devil himself. Don't take our word for it, though. Give it a listen and judge for yourself.Check out the up to date track list for Guitar Hero III after the break.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground released to retail this week and, as promised, it features an exclusive Guitar Hero III demo inside. But now we're hearing about a new, hacker'ish way to gain access to the precious GHIII demo without shelling out the cash for Tony Hawk ... simply burn it to a CD.Over on the Xbox Live the Guide forums, posters are reporting that the GHIII demo has been leaked online and can be downloaded off a popular fileshare website, be burnt to a CD or DVD and played on any Xbox 360. We've already heard of people being successful in their GHIII demo stealing ventures, but others are reporting problems with their 360s reading the burnt media. From what we know, those who are claiming burnt GHIII demo success have downloaded the demo's ISO file, burned it to a CD or DVD, and tada! Instant GHIII demo launched through the Xbox 360 games blade. We guess if there's a will, l33t Guitar Hero fanboys and the internet, then there will always be a way.[Via Digg]

  • The Wii Guitar Hero controller works just fine

To be honest, we've always thought of Guitar Hero as a casual series, even though Hard Mode and above are too hard for us. This perception is mostly due to the fact that it's so popular. But Josh3D's performance of Dragonforce's "Through the Fire and Flames" destroys that perception and any other thoughts we may have been having. After completing the song, he takes off the guitar controller, revealing the Wiimote held inside, therefore confirming that this video depicts the Wii version of Guitar Hero III.Some of you may contend that this person could have spent more time learning skills that are applicable in real life instead of practicing Guitar Hero so much, but Josh3D has clearly exited our reality and entered one in which it's possible to do this. Who knows what kinds of skills are useful there?[Via NeoGAF]

  • Guitar Hero III apparently awesome (who knew?)

Boy, that Guitar Hero franchise really sucks, huh? If there were ever a set of games that were a complete and utter waste of time, it's these. Luckily, Guitar Hero III changes everything. No, wait. We have that all wrong. Guitar Hero is unconditionally awesome, and we can expect nothing less from the latest and soon to be greatest version -- especially when we're playing it on the Wii. 1UP recently took a look at all three next-gen versions of Guitar Hero III and reported back improvements across the board, particularly in regard to the guitar peripheral. From buttons to accelerometer, the guitars seem to have gotten a major overhaul, and longtime fans of the series will find their frustrations with past versions fading away. The Wii controller offers up a tiny bonus, as well; the Wii remote speaker outputs, as as 1UP's Garnett Lee accurately puts it, "the ugly guitar string twang" that sounds when players miss a note. Not only is that more accurate -- such sounds should come from your guitar, after all -- but in multiplayer situations, when you're strumming along with no problems and your buddy can't seem to find his butt from the strum bar, you're less likely to be distracted by his mistakes. All in all, it seems that Guitar Hero III is taking the franchise to a whole new level and getting closer to simulating actual guitar play without involving actual guitars.

Game Revolution's Nick Tan recently played Guitar Hero III song, Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce, on expert. That website describes it as the hardest in the game, designed to be "unbeatable." And Nick conquered it.Yes, weeks before you adoring, fake guitar fans get a chance to play, the hardest song has been bested by a player on his fourth attempt. The video of the event is mediocre, and the moment of triumph is anticlimactic. ("Go balloons, go balloons, we need more balloons. ...") But we were still floored watching this face-melting song --and player -- in action.Be amazed by the clip after the break.

Gametap's got a quick look at the new Guitar Hero sequel, coming out for the Mac later this year, and the biggest news is that they've got a date: the PC and Mac versions are shipping simultaneously with the consoles on October 28. Rock on! Apparently you'll also be able to use the mouse and keyboard to play (although, come on, Guitar Hero is all about that guitar controller that ships with the game), and this part is pretty slick, too: PC and Mac users will be able to play against (or with) each other online. Very, very nice.No system requirements yet, but I'm guessing that, like Tiger Woods and Madden, this is going to be for the non-integrated video cards only. Still, if you've got the kit to run it, it'll definitely be a good time. Our sister games blog Joystiq has rounded up the entire setlist for the game, with YouTube links to every song in it. In fact, if you've already got Frets on Fire working, you can start practicing now -- you'll need it if you want to shred against me.

Previously, the setlist for Guitar Hero III was "leaked" onto the interwebs and now Activision has come clean and announced some new tracks which coincidentally appeared on that leaked setlist as well as a few others that didn't.Viewable after the break is the list of all seventeen newly announced tracks including hits like "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels Band, "Before I Forget" by Slipknot, "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" by Pat Benetar and "Holiday in Cambodia" by Dead Kennedys. These new tracks, coupled with those that have already been announced, make Guitar Hero III look all the more attractive and prove that it can definitely hold its own against Rock Band's track offerings. The new rock n' roll war has just been cranked up to eleven and we're stuck right in the middle.

Activision released a ton of Guitar Hero III (due out on Oct. 28) tracks this morning, some you've probably heard rumored before, some of which are likely surprises to you. Either way, we've provided a ridiculously clickable list that may or may not include a little profanity. We apologize in advance. Same Old Song and Dance (by Aerosmith) Helicopter (by Bloc Party) Stricken (by Disturbed) Monsters (by Matchbook Romance) Before I Forget (by Slipknot) Kool Thing (by Sonic Youth) When You Were Young (by The Killers) Devil Went Down to Georgia (as made famous by Charlie Daniels Band) Sunshine of Your Love (as made famous by Cream) Holiday in Cambodia (as made famous by Dead Kennedys) Cliffs of Dover (as made famous by Eric Johnson) Hit Me with Your Best Shot (as made famous by Pat Benetar) Black Magic Woman (as made famous by Santana) Story of My Life (as made famous by Social Distortion) Pride and Joy (as made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughn) The Seeker (as made famous by The Who) Black Sunshine (as made famous by White Zombie) What's that? You've already forgotten the previously announced songs? There's a big list after the break.

With Guitar Hero III's imminent release later this month we've almost got the entire track list for the game. Almost. Activision have today revealed another seven songs that will be available on the game disc. Are you ready to see them? Are you sure? Go on then, they're just below. Check out the rest of the previously announced songs as well, after the break. Same Old Song and Dance (by Aerosmith) Helicopter (by Bloc Party) Stricken (by Disturbed) Monsters (by Matchbook Romance) Before I Forget (by Slipknot) Kool Thing (by Sonic Youth) When You Were Young (by The Killers) Devil Went Down to Georgia (as made famous by Charlie Daniels Band) Sunshine of Your Love (as made famous by Cream) Holiday in Cambodia (as made famous by Dead Kennedys) Cliffs of Dover (as made famous by Eric Johnson) Hit Me with Your Best Shot (as made famous by Pat Benetar) Black Magic Woman (as made famous by Santana) Story of My Life (as made famous by Social Distortion) Pride and Joy (as made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughn) The Seeker (as made famous by The Who) Black Sunshine (as made famous by White Zombie) As usual, "as made famous by" means that the song will be a cover. All the others are master tracks. We're excited about this lineup, particularly with the addition of British indie rock favourites such as Bloc Party. Don't forget more songs will continuously be available for download after the game is released too. At what price? Good question.

Yeah, we've seen this puppy around before, but never gotten this close. This here's the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero III's Les Paul, complete with green-glowing Xbox 360 Guide button and wirelessness. Big ups to Red Octane for the extra fret board stylings and refined look, but we'd to look forward to playing with this one come October if they wired up a cardboard box to do the honors.%Gallery-7822%

While we were busy covering the frenzy of the Halo 3 launch yesterday, it seems some other game news was also being covered. Yeah, we're as surprised as you. But lo and behold, it looks like Guitar Hero III is pulling out the big guns for its impending battle with Rock Band. Activision revealed yesterday that the remaining members of the Sex Pistols will reunite to rerecord "Anarchy in the UK" for Guitar Hero III. The master tapes of the original recording have been lost, thus necessitating the need to rerecord the tracks. We have to admit, with so many great tracks heading to Guitar Hero III, the decision between Rock Band and GHIII is getting more difficult every day.[Via Joystiq]Read -- Video interview with the Sex Pistols about Guitar Hero IIIRead -- Sex Pistols join Guitar Hero III

  • GH III soundtrack unlocks three game tracks

The capitalistic executives over at Interscope Records just announced plans for a Guitar Hero III soundtrack that will include not only music from the game, but also a code to download three additional songs for the game. The GH III soundtrack is set to release on October 30th just two days after GH III jams into stores, and will come packaged with a code that will be redeemable via the XBLM. The code will unlock three downloadable in-game songs including "Carcinogen Crush" by AFI, "Tina" by Flyleaf and a remixed version of Marilyn Manson's "Putting Holes in Happiness" performed by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. Here's to hoping that Interscope doesn't tack on an additional $6.25 to the cost of the soundtrack, because of the three in-game tracks. We all know how expensive such content can be.[Via Joystiq]

But like anything you post on the internet, no matter how long it's there, someone will have read it and have saved it. And so is the case this time, because we have the leaked 70+ GH III tracks which includes 25+ bonus songs and lots of other greatness. If you're willing to believe, you can view the entire (rumored) GH III set list after the break and find a few of your favorite tunes. No longer content to be hooked up to your big screen HDTV and 7-channel surround sound system, Aspyr and Activision have announced that Guitar Hero III is rockin' on over to the more moderately sized screens of your Mac and/or PC this fall. We imagine legions of cubicle dwellers violating their company's IT policies, bringing their axe into work, and shredding the pain of office life away. More likely, we can imagine a portable rig on your laptop, just in case that whole Guitar Hero DS thing doesn't work out. GameDaily spoke with Aspyr's Jay Gordon about the port, and got some burning questions answered: the game will ship simultaneously with its console counterparts; the guitar will be a USB model of the Gibson (sorry 486 gamers); and no word on how downloadable songs will be distributed but they'll share soon. And with this, the PSP remains alone, the only major gaming platform without Guitar Hero.

  • DS version of Guitar Hero III to feature a guitar controller?

It's not set in stone, but in an interview with CNET.au, RedOctane cofounder Charles Huang suggested that the DS version of Guitar Hero III would include a guitar controller "as long as it makes sense and it plays well." Huang went on to say that RedOctane is "exploring ways to get peripherals on a DS game," and that the company is working on approach with Nintendo's assistance. Given the novel controllers we've already seen hit the DS, RedOctane's got some work to do to back up Huang's assertion that GHIII on the DS "will play probably unlike any other DS game that has come out," but we're willing to give the company the benefit of the doubt -- they seem to have a handle on that whole "gameplay" thing.[Via DS Fanboy]

  • Joystiq hands-on: Guitar Hero III

    07.15.2007

We got a lot of information on Guitar Hero III this week, we even got some solid time with Red Octane's wireless controllers, but what about the game? You can definitely tell Guitar Hero III, from a graphics perspective, was made by Neversoft instead of Harmonix (Guitar Hero I and II). The look is just "different" for better or for worse. For better is that the mouths actually move to the song now instead of just moving up and down, plus the game looks beautiful because it was designed for now-gen systems. For worse is that it just doesn't look like the first two, even the characters we've come to know and love look, um ... different. But it's not all about the graphics in GH, it's about the gameplay and music. As for the gameplay, it's Guitar Hero, the look may have changed, but the feel is still the same. We were told that many more artists are looking to be featured on Guitar Hero now that it is such a big hit, so there are far less "as made famous by" and far more original master tracks. The most amazing of which is "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones. Also, "Cult of Personality" was actually re-recorded by the original band Living Colour to bring it a little bit more up-to-date for Guitar Hero III -- but it is still most definitely the original song. The tracks already revealed for Guitar Hero III show that the game won't be lacking in the rock department. For fans of the series and for those who don't know all about the Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band kerfuffle, the transition should be relatively smooth. It is Guitar Hero after all and if you already have a guitar you'll be all set, or you can purchase a wireless one, available on all systems with the game, when it releases. The only thing that could resonate badly for the title is that one of the Joystiq crew came back to the room after playing Guitar Hero, having played Rock Band as well, and said, "It's great! It's just a little lonely." But as far as being a Guitar Hero game, Guitar Hero III looks and plays fine as a continuation of the series. Now we shall go seek red doors.%Gallery-4675%

  • Guitar Hero III, Rock Band guitar gaming round-up

There's been a lot of guitar gaming related news lately for some reason, starting with the spotting of a wired version of the Rock Band virtual guitar. Joystiq speculates that this could mean a cheaper guitar for the Xbox 360 version of the game, but then again they've been playing a lot of Rock Band lately so the rockin' out may be affecting their minds. The second tidbit of news comes from the ever informant FCC, which has just taken a look at the Guitar Hero III Les Paul. We've seen this particular model before a couple of times -- albeit without the black lick of paint -- so it's not a great surprise to see this hanging around at the Federal Comm' Comm'. A much bigger surprise is the fact that the FCC shots don't include blurred pictures of the approval team (and cameraman) rocking out: an FCC tester position evidently ≠ a rockstar lifestyle. You can also see hands-on with both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band over at Joystiq.Read - Guitar Hero III guitar at FCCRead - Wired Rock Band guitar?Read - Wii's wireless Rock Band guitarRead - Hands-on: Rock BandRead - First-look : Guitar Hero III

As the axe battle continues to heat up, here we have a first look at the Guitar Hero III controller for the Wii, which looks an awful lot like the first Les Paul-modeled iteration we saw -- save for that handy Wiimote slot and Nintendo-esque toggle switch, of course. Since the amazing success of its first two games, the Guitar Hero series has gotten a little subtitle happy. First it was the mouthful of Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the '80s, now Activision has revealed a new subtitle for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.In addition to the new title, Activision has also released some nice, high-res pictures of the previously announced faux-Gibson guitars that will be used to control the game -- a Les Paul model for the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 and a Kramer model for the PS2. Note that the fret buttons are now all black with thin colored outlines to maintain a cleaner, less toy-like look on the neck. The wireless guitars will also have removable faceplates to let you customize your rock experience. The characters in the game will also be rocking out on Gibsons.
