Best Buy has a rather enjoyable Guitar Hero III offer where, with a successful pre-order of Metallica's upcoming Death Magnet album, you'll receive eleven GHIII tracks. DLC tracks that we presume come from the album itself. There are three different flavors of the album to pre-order that range from $10 to $30 that'll get you the free songs (while supplies last). Metallica fans, it's time to go shopping.[Thanks, SidearmS]

Well, this should make the patented Joystiq Instrument Compatibility Matrix a bit easier to memorize. Straight from our special Leipzig correspondent Jem Alexander, Activision says that If you play Guitar Hero World Tour on PS2, PS3 or 360, your instrument is going to work. Whether it be from Rock Band, Rock Band 2 or whatever, it works with Guitar Hero World Tour. Now, what does this mean for the Wii version of the game? We have absolutely no idea. But hey, what are you complaining about: It's got Miis in it! Isn't that enough?

British power metal squealers DragonForce will debut a new and inevitably over-the-top single in a Guitar Hero III track pack later this week. Taken from their new album, Ultra Beatdown, "Heroes of Our Time" will no doubt challenge serious shredders with a never-ending string of shifting notes and finger-knot solos when it arrives on Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store on August 21.The DragonForce Track Pack will also provide two other overwrought songs, namely "Revolution Deathsquad" and "Operation Ground and Pound," from the album dubbed Inhuman Rampage. Expect this one to go for the usual 500 MS Points ($6.25).[Via press release]

Another Guitar Hero III track pack is ready to be released this week. the Dragonforce track pack will include three tracks from the English speed metal band, including "Heroes Of Our Time," the debut single from their upcoming album "Ultra Beatdown." The other two tracks are "Revolution Deathsquad" and "Operation Ground Pound," both from their third album "Inhuman Rampage." The track pack will be released worldwide on August 21st.Dragonforce fans will no doubt be ecstatic at the idea of not only playing three more of their songs on Guitar Hero III, but also shredding along to "Heroes Of Our Time" before the album is even released. For non-Dragonforce fans, this is probably only a worthwhile purchase if you're in need of a hardcore Guitar Hero III challenge. We just hope they're a bit easier than "Through The Fire And The Flames."[Via Press Release]

  • Rhythm games grow industry by 32% in '08

Rhythm games have certainly been keeping the tempo up for financial growth in the industry. GameDaily notes UBS analyst Ben Schachter's report, showing "music-themed games" have made up 15% of software sales year-to-date and 32% year-over-year growth so far.The Guitar Hero franchise is already up 82% this year, with Guitar Hero: On Tour taking in $15 million in July alone. Meanwhile, Rock Band, across all platforms, took in $47 million in July ... and that doesn't even count any DLC sales. Unless the rhythm game bubble bursts in the next few months, GH: World Tour and Rock Band 2 sales -- along with their respective DLC sales -- could make up a significant portion of another record-breaking year for the industry.

  • Actilizzard CEO finds Warner Music's logic on music licensing 'one-sided'

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick finds comments made by Warner Music -- saying it should be paid more for the use of its music in games like Guitar Hero -- a little "one-sided." The Financial Times reports that the Blizzavision chief thinks comments made by Warner Music's Edgar Bronfman don't take into account the "capital and resources" required to turn the song into something "fun to play."With the music industry taking a backseat to the games industry, it's not surprising to find record execs trying to figure out a way to squeeze more money out of a billion-dollar franchise. The thing is, though, that Activision's merger with Vivendi Games, connects it to Vivendi Universal, which owns Universal Music, the "world's largest music publisher." At the end of the day, Kotick can snap his fingers and never talk to Warner Music again, all the while squeezing every last dollar out of the Guitar Hero franchise until it stops being the soup du jour.

Even if you're holding out for Guitar Hero: World Tour, or if you just have Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for some reason, 60 bucks for a copy of Guitar Hero III and a guitar is a nice deal. The Les Paul alone costs $60 from RedOctane's website, and it doesn't come with "Paint it Black."The deal gets even more awesomer when combined with the current "buy one, get 20% off" Wii game deal. We aren't Toys R Us policy experts, and we don't want to guarantee that the store won't give you some kind of trouble if you try to double-dip deals, but you can probably get a cheap Guitar Hero and a second cheap game.[Thanks, Emre!]

Your attention has probably already turned to the Fall and the imminent arrival of Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour. But we've always believed that one should make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold. Actually, that's a song the Girl Scouts sing, but we think the logic still holds true. So we won't be forgetting about old friend Guitar Hero III, which will be getting a brand new track pack tomorrow. You can expect Flyleaf's "Tina," "Carcinogen Crush" by AFI and a remix of Marilyn Manson's "Putting Holes In Happiness" by Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. There's no price attached, but 500 points seems to be the standard for this sort of thing.

Good old Acti just announced brand newish downloadable content for Guitar Hero III that's scheduled to hit the XBLM sometime tomorrow. The new DLC is called the "Interscope Track Pack" which we're labeling as "newish" DLC only because the three tracks were previously made available to those who purchased the Guitar Hero III album. Now, come this Thursday, the three GHIII tracks by Flyleaf, AFI and Marilyn Manson can be purchased for presumably 500 Microsoft points. Presumably, because that's what all the other GHIII track packs sell for and no pricing details have been announced for this latest track pack. Press release after the break, enjoy. Activision has announced yet more downloadable content for Guitar Hero III today. Partnering with Interscope Records, three new tracks will be made available to download this Thursday, August 7th. The songs in question are Flyleaf's "Tina," AFI's "Carcinogen Crush" and a remix of Marilyn Manson's "Putting Holes In Happiness". This is the same song pack that was made available to those who bought the Guitar Hero III soundtrack CD but this time, we assume you have to pay for it. If you're fans of these tracks, then no doubt this is all good news. If not, go play some more Rock Band.

Not to be outdone by Rock Band's premium drum controller, Activision has announced a collaboration with Logitech to produce a line of "premium instrument controllers." No specific type of controller or prices were given, all we know is they will be "compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour's advanced feature set" and they will begin arriving "later this year." Bruce Lancaster, the VP of Logitech's gaming business compares their entry into the the market for fake instruments to their entry into the market for fake steering wheels. So, what kind of premium "instruments" are you looking for and how much are you willing to dish out for one of these babies?[Via Joystiq]

Honestly, with a new, four-instrument Guitar Hero game just around the corner, we're not exactly sure why you'd sink one more penny into DLC for Guitar Hero III. That is, of course, unless you're so obsessed with the guitar that you think the inclusion of drum and vocals sullies the very name of Guitar Hero. If that describes you, then you may just find today's offer pretty tantalizing. As you may remember, the Virtuoso Track Pack includes "Surfing with the Alien" as performed by Joe Satriani, "For the Love of God" as performed by Steve Vai and "Soothsayer" as performed by Buckethead. And, as we guessed, you can get the whole lot for 500 points.

You can say what you like about the "listenability" of Dragonforce's music, but there are two things you just can't argue with. 1. Their music is extremely difficult to play in Guitar Hero and 2. They have a hell of a talent for naming songs. Rule 2 has been proven once again with a downloadable track pack coming from the band to Guitar Hero III on August 21.The track pack will include "'Heroes Of Our Time' (rad!) the first single from the new album Ultra Beatdown (also rad!) as well as Inhuman Rampage (totally rad!) classics 'Operation Ground and Pound' (radder!) and 'Revolution Deathsquad' (raddest!)." So, will rule 1 also be confirmed with the new pack? Well, when a song's called 'Revolution Deathsquad,' we're at least hoping to end up with some blisters.

Available for a 500 Microsoft point purchase off the Xbox Live Marketplace is a brand new and oh so challenging Guitar Hero III Virtuoso Track Pack comprised of three songs. The three tracks included are "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani, "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai and "Soothsayer" by Buckethead. And early word on the street is that you'll have to be a darn good Guitar Hero virtuoso to master the crazy difficult riffs, hammer ons, pull offs and other guitar skills. Good luck with that.

Looks like Activision is ready for some blood in the battle against Rock Band; after scoring Van Halen and the Eagles as exclusives, they have now secured the lengendary Jimi Hendrix into their lineup for Guitar Hero: World Tour. Hendrix will be a playable character in the game, and two master tracks have also been confirmed to be in the game, with more tracks coming later as downloadable content: "Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena) "The Wind Cries Mary" In Legends of Rock news, three songs are set to debut this Thursday on Guitar Hero III. We honestly think the tracklist speaks for itself: "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai "Soothsayer" by Buckethead This "Virtuoso Pack" will be released this Thursday. While no pricing info was provided, we can assume it will be $6.25 like previous 3-track packs.[Via Joystiq and press release]

Activision is set to add three new tracks to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock's downloadable setlist. Songs from true guitar heroes Joe Satriani (above) and Steve Vai will be available to download this Thursday, along with another from Buckethead, the guitarist best known to gamers for the GH2 track "Jordan" and rock listeners for wearing a KFC bucket on his head while playing. (Though likely not for having worked on the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie soundtrack.)The DLC – aptly titled "The Virtuoso Pack" – has yet to be priced, but three song GH3 sets have historically cost 500 MS points (or $6.25 from the PlayStation Store). Here are the specific tracks, complete with video links for your memory-jogging pleasure: "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai "Soothsayer" by Buckethead
