Guitar Hero III sale makes economic sense
Whether you don't yet own Guitar Hero III or just want to pick up another Les Paul guitar, you might find yourself shopping at Circuit City this week. The retailer is selling bundles of the game for the low price of $59.99, which is the same price (and even cheaper, depending on where you find it) as a standalone guitar. If interested, you can either drive yourself over to a brick and mortar store or check out this deal online. It might be worth it to have an extra guitar for when Guitar Hero: World Tour rolls around, after all.[Via CAG]
Guitar Hero III: Backstage Pass simulates the crushing pain of having your demo tape rejected
The Guitar Hero franchise is synonymous with headbangin', mosh pittin' in-your-face rock 'n roll, but the latest joint released for phones is going in a slightly different direction. Rest assured, rock is still an integral component of the game, but Guitar Hero III: Backstage Pass takes a step back from the actual performances to simulate the whole rockstar experience from end to end. Buyers can apparently expect "more than 25 hours of gameplay" through a whole RPG-like storyline of promotion, gigging, and getting screwed over by shady managers. Even better, an online component over the web lets players compare stats and achievements, download new content, and set up challenges for in-game money. Groupies aren't included, as far as we can tell -- you'll still need your Ferrari-branded Vertu to help out with that.
Metallica album coming to Guitar Hero on day of release
It's not Guitar Hero: Metallica but metal fans should still be excited about today's announcement (at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference) that their next album, Death Magnetic, will be released as a Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero World Tour the same day it launches in stores this fall. "Who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out," the boys from the band said on their official web site.The band is no stranger to rhythm games, already having tracks featured in both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III already. The band was previously reported to be in talks to premiere a single as Rock Band DLC.
The Guitar Hero / Rock Band guitar matrix v2.0!
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith recently released and we have Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2 to look forward to later this year, meaning we're getting a bunch of brand new guitar peripherals. It's a free Xbox Live Marketplace download day, as we get not one but TWO free chuncks of downloadable content goodness. One being free Rainbow Six Vegas 2 DLC, the other being free Guitar Hero III DLC. All free, free, free!The RSV2 "Gift Pack DLC" (no longer called the "Fan Pack") includes a set of three re-releases of the multiplayer maps Calypso Casino, Murdertown and CQB Training but now re-lit for a "darker" gaming experience. Today's free GHIII DLC is the July Fourth inspired "Top Gun Anthem" track of which we don't believe Tom Cruise will make an appearance in or would even support. Meh. A closer look at those Guitar Hero figures
Last week, we told you about Todd McFarlane's interesting decision to gobble up the Guitar Hero license and the subsequent creation of a set of four Guitar Hero figures that are set to release this Fall. No, we still haven't fully accepted the figures seeing that we don't have any real attachment to the characters of Guitar Hero franchise, but we do now know exactly what each figure will look like. Viewable in the gallery below are the final sculpts of the Johnny Napalm, Lars Umlaut, Axel Steel and God of Rock figures. Not horrible (except for the God of Rock's odd looking shoulder), but we'll stick with our Halo and Gears figures.%Gallery-26673%
Top Gun Anthem on GHIII is Wingman friendly
One more DLC item will be available this week as Guitar Hero III cranks out a growing list of free songs from the "strangest places" category. The new track this time doesn't come from a game, but rather it comes from the Top Gun flick. In fact, it's the film's theme song: "Top Gun Anthem." The heavy-on-guitar-solos track will be available this Thursday, July 3. We guess you shouldn't play this song alone. Make sure you've got your Wingman there with you; it could make the difference. GHIII's July 4th surpise: Free 'Top Gun' DLC!
Continuing their downloadable content release frenzy, Guitar Hero III will be releasing another free download this Thursday, July 3rd, just in time to celebrate the Fourth of July.This Thursday, available as free download off the Xbox Live Marketplace will be the "Top Gun Anthem" as GHIII downloadable content. An iconic 1980's anthem that single handily changed the world. No really, it changed the world! Though, we'll be the first to admit it is a bit repetitive and long, but we can't help but be uber excited to celebrate our Fourth of July festivities with a tribute to our Tom Cruise Maverick. Fly on Maverick, fly on!
Thrashing footage of 'I Am Murloc' in action
With Activision and Blizzard working together to achieve total world domination, the fan favorite track "I Am Murloc" was released free for Guitar Hero III on Thursday. Surprisingly the World of Warcraft based track is no slouch in the difficulty department and, while it isn't a replacement for "Through the Fire and Flames," it may pose a challenge for nimble fingered casual players. Whether or not you enjoy the World of Warcraft reference, the song is a nice added bonus for gamers who are looking to freshen up their Guitar Hero III experience as they wait on Guitar Hero: Aerosmith or more information on Guitar Hero: World Tour.Update: Readers are telling us that this is actually a custom Guitar Hero II track, but you get the idea of what to expect. Think of it as a dramatic re-enactment of what you'll get! Yeah, sorry for the error.
Rock out to WoW, free GHIII DLC now available
Yesterday, we told you about World of Warcraft's "I am Murloc" track making its way to Guitar Hero III as downloadable content. Well, we just wanted to inform you that today the 14MB track became available for download off the XBLM and can be downloaded for FREE! Free WoW themed Guitar Hero DLC, what could be better? What's that? Free WoW themed Rock Band DLC you say? Come on now, be fair and don't be that guy. For shame.
Purchase your own Guitar Hero ... action figure?
Okay, we aren't sure what the general opinion is going to be for why these are being created or who's going to end up purchasing 'em, but we think we can agree it's an odd franchise to spawn action figures from.The Toddy McFarlane sculpting crew (the same crew who makes those lovely Halo 3 figures) just announced today that they've partnered with Acti to release Guitar Hero action figures ... yes, Guitar Hero figures of action. Odd, seeing that the GH franchise really doesn't focus on character development so our enthusiasm for owning a figure like, say, Johnny Napalm is kinda lacking. Oh well. The complete set of four figures (Axel Steel, Johnny Napalm, Lars Umlaut and God of Rock) will be available this Fall for around $15 a pop. Yup, yup ...[Thanks, TMD]
WoW song "I am Murloc" to become Guitar Hero III DLC
Murloc fans rejoice (and we know there are plenty of you), as Activision-Blizzard brings wonderful news. New downloadable content for Guitar Hero III will be available tomorrow, the 26th of June. The track? "I am Murloc" by Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain, which is based around everyone's favorite amphibious freaks from World of Warcraft. Even better is the fact that this DLC will come at the pleasing price-point of zilch. Check out the embedded clip of the song -- even if you don't particularly like it, who can argue with a freebie? Guitar Hero III gets free WoW song
Guitar Hero III is getting more free DLC from the videogame tie-in category. Like the God of War track before it, this new downloadable song, titled "I am Murloc," is an ode to everyone's favorite MMO: World of Warcraft. The thrash-metal song from Blizzard's house band Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain will be available for download off the PSN tomorrow, June 26. Might we also add that "Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain" is one of the oddest and awesomely bad band names ever. [Via press release]
Free WoW Guitar Hero III DLC on its way
Acti and Guitar Hero III are pulling another video game promotion card from their marketing deck (shout out to the free Halo theme DLC), with the announcement of a FREE piece of World of Warcraft musical DLC. WoW's viral, underground and cult hit "I Am Murloc" by Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain will be released as GHIII DLC to the XBLM tomorrow, June 26th to celebrate the kickoff of the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational this Friday. But if you're a WoW addict, you probably already knew that. Actually, if you're a WoW addict you probably wouldn't be playing or even own GHIII seeing that your 40 hour gaming week consists of nothing but WoW. Viva la vida! Coldplay GHIII DLC is now available
A reminder for those who, with the aid of Guitar Hero III, were looking forward to jamming out to Coldplay this week, your downloadable content is now available. The GHIII Coldplay Track Pack, featuring the songs "Violet Hill", "Yellow" and "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face", is now ready for your 500 Microsoft point purchase off the XBLM. So, this being a reminder, you can go and get your Coldplay DLC purchase on if you so choose. Also, seeing that this is probably going to be our last post talking about Coldplay, we feel the need to sneak in their Apple iTunes commercial. We thoroughly enjoy the purple and blue smoke that emits from the band as they play ... it's freakin' b-e-a-utiful!
Coldplay DLC takes over GHIII next Thursday
Just as Entertainment Weekly promised, Activision recently sent word that music from Coldplay, including a track from their latest album Viva la Vida, will be making its way to the XBLM as Guitar Hero III downloadable content next Thursday, June 19th. The Coldplay DLC pack will consist of three tracks including their latest single "Violet Hill", their first ever hit "Yellow" and the single "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face". Even though Acti didn't make any mention of pricing, we expect you'll be able to grab this three pack for the standard GHIII DLC going rate of 500 Microsoft points. Coldplay's new single, two more tracks coming to Guitar Hero III
Just in case you hadn't heard via, oh, every manner of media possible, British rockers Coldplay will have a new album, Viva la Vida, on shelves (and your favorite music download service) June 17. Today Activision announced that a dose of Coldplay DLC will hit Guitar Hero III two days later on June 19.The Coldplay track pack will contain three songs, including "Violet Hill," the first single from Viva la Vida. "Yellow" and "God Put a Smile on Your Face" from the album A Rush of Blood to the Head round out the set. Activision has yet to price the goods, but three-song packs have historically run 500 MS points via Xbox Live and $6.25 on PSN.[update: Activision sends along confirmation that the Coldplay track pack will, in fact, set you back 500 MS points or $6.25 on XBL and PSN, respectively.]
May NPD: Um ... take a guess
It was a good month for Wii, as the system again sold the most in the United States. However, sales were down, likely due to shortages of Wii Fit. And, as you'd expect, people went crazy for that high-tech Balance Board and software. But, hey, a win is a win, right?
