Welcome to a special President's Day Engadget HD podcast (ok, not that special) where we kick things off with last week's hot button topic: universal pricing. Is a forced even playing field between online and B&M retailers fair, or harmful to the consumer? You guys sounded off in the comments, so we took another look at Samsung's plan for its 2012 HDTVs. We've also got plenty of HTPC news, with InfiniTV access on more platforms, a new round of arguments between Boxee and the NCTA and Kinect for Media Center. It's also time to say hello to Aereo -- even if we think it may not be long for this world -- before taking a look at the latest receivers from Onkyo and what's on TV this week. It's been a busy week in HD, with surprising new streaming offerings on the way from the likes of Sky and Verizon / Redbox, while Apple and Google each also pushed more minor updates to their TV boxes. Vizio is nearly ready to release a new format of HDTV in the US, and we also got some hands on time with a new TV companion app for your iPad. Of course, we couldn't get through this week without some discussion about the Super Bowl, which includes mentioning a server outage that interrupted things for Harmony Link users. There's that and plenty more to discuss, so go ahead and press play -- but remember to vote for the 2011 Engadget Awards first. We've been talking about initiatives with the potential to change how we watch TV and now, one of them is finally ready to launch. We spent a lot of time going over Microsoft's new dashboard for the Xbox 360 and what it could, but probably won't, do to the market. Of course the folks in Redmond aren't the only ones with something to show as we also cast an eye towards new iPad apps from Dijit and Cox, as well as the possibility we'll see DirecTV's HR34 Home Media Center DVR this week. Other topics include the cable companies getting out of wireless, Lovefilm switching from Flash to Silverlight, and Time Warner's tablet app arriving on Android. Flowing through this week's packed lineup of topic is a theme of Hollywood vs. new technology, whether it's CBS against a new Apple TV service and Hulu or the MPAA v. Zediva. As much as wrangling over licensing causes us headaches there are some (potentially) positive developments to mention with new cable choices spreading in Canada, new features on the way from DirecTV, and Time Warner's tablet app coming to Android. On the hardware side of things it appears AMOLED may be ready to replace ZScreen as next year's vaporware tech of choice -- is there any chance we'll be able to buy either one any time soon? We'll close things out with a look at the latest cameras from RED and a look back at the first "high definition" broadcasts before discussing what we'll be watching (and playing) this week.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh (@bjdraw), Richard Lawler (@rjcc)Producer: Trent Wolbe11:05 - CBS boss reveals why the company is 'against joining Apple TV' (or Hulu)13:55 - Zediva ordered to permanently shut down operations, pay $1.8 million to MPAA17:30 - Blockbuster Express kiosks hike rental rates to keep offering new movies21:10 - Netflix, MGM strike licensing agreement ahead of launch in the UK, Ireland22:45 - NYT: Disney, YouTube strike new content partnership, will launch kid-friendly channel24:39 - Plex hops on the Google TV train, finds it has plenty of room to stretch its legs26:23 - Google might offer TV / phone service over its fiber network28:19 - Rogers Cable tries on flexible channel packages in Ontario, will customers like the fit?31:00 - DirecTV adds more subscribers than ever, will push live streaming, HD UI, and multiroom DVRs33:48 - TWCable TV app in development for Android, should drop before the season's first 3-pointer (updated)35:15 - Motorola Corvair 6-inch Android 2.3 tablet outed, destined for the home automation set?37:46 - Sony posts $350 million loss in Q2 earnings report, forecasts full-year loss39:55 - Samsung, RealD pact for ZScreen passive glasses 3D TVs falls apart41:45 - DuPont's AMOLED HDTV tech licensed by... someone, will likely be used to build HDTVs44:36 - RED makes the Scarlet official, 5K stills and 4K video for $9,75045:30 - Peter Jackson reveals the Red Epic secrets behind The Hobbit (video)47:50 - BBC celebrates 75 years of 'high definition' TV this weekend50:20 - Must See HDTV (November 7th - 13th)Hear the podcastLISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)

A year after its debut, Google TV is finally getting a fresh UI, its first taste of Market apps, and all-new Honeycomb underpinnings, so naturally that gets most of our attention this week. Of course, it seems like everyone is doing what they can to shake up the TV industry, putting Sony, Roku, Plex, Microsoft, DirecTV, and Redbox in the news as well. The one common thread joining these companies is that they can't do it without content, and it appears Warner Bros. and other studios may be locking the windowing gates tighter than ever. After all of that, we'll dig into what we have been and will be watching, so press play and see if you agree with our choices this week.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh (@bjdraw), Richard Lawler (@rjcc)Producer: Trent Wolbe07:20 - Google TV, take two, arrives next week with Honeycomb, Android Market18:43 - Sony to divide TV division into three-headed monster, looks to bounce back29:28 - Roku adds more games, cleans up the PQ on its latest streamers30:34 - myPlex makes streaming your media simple, gives you one queue to rule them all33:20 - Xbox Companion app for WP7 shown off at Nokia World, leaks Vudu integration (video)41:22 - DirecTV's iPad app updated with live TV streaming, as long as you stay at home44:08 - Redbox's $1 per night DVD rentals jump to $1.20 October 31st, Blu-ray and games stay the same47:08 - Warner pushes 28-day new release delay on Blockbuster, matches Redbox and Netflix58:55 - Must See HDTV (October 31st - November 6th)Hear the podcastLISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)

Now that Netflix has revealed exactly how many subscribers it has lost over the last few months, we're wondering what's next for the video service and its competitors like Amazon. In other pay-TV news, we have an upgraded UI on the way from DirecTV and new social media hooks from AT&T that could signal a change in the way we watch TV. Before closing things out with our picks of what to watch this week, we even had some time for new ultra HDTV standards, mobile app consolidation for FiOS and Sony's PlayStation 3D Display.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh (@bjdraw), Richard Lawler (@rjcc)Producer: Trent Wolbe16:18 - Netflix US subscriber count drops by 800k in Q3, 21.45 million still streaming18:24 - Netflix to expand to UK, Ireland in 'early 2012,' looks to challenge Lovefilm24:19 - Amazon Prime Instant Video expands its library with even more video from PBS27:23 - BBC's global iPlayer app adds AirPlay streaming, should just be on Apple TV30:00 - DirecTV shows off its new HD UI with a website and trailer, still no release date33:55 - U-verse TV gets social with help from Miso, TV Foundry, Wayvin and BuddyTV Guide40:00 - Verizon's My FiOS app puts your entire living room under one Android roof42:39 - Playstation 3D Display hits shelves November 13, Sony answers your burning questions44:50 - Ultra HDTV technical standards agreed on, more pixels is a good thing52:30 - Must See HDTV (October 24th - 30th)Hear the podcastLISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)

Check your Bingo squares -- we have a full on geek rant this week. While DVBLink's Boxee extender engendered nothing but peaceful conversation, we couldn't help but dig into the next two topics. Rumors of Microsoft's efforts to integrate cable TV into a unified search with its other Xbox offerings continue to swirl, which left us wondering just who is standing in the way of innovation. Meanwhile, the cable companies and content providers are at odds over how to distribute their channels with little thought given to the end user's experience. Of course, we do have some happy news, with Star Trek: TNG coming to Blu-ray, bigger LCDs and 4K support for the PS3.
