  • WoW Rookie: Soulstone and you

As a priest, pally or possibly a lower level shaman, you are often bestowed with the responsibility of a soulstone, giving you the ability to self-rez. And as we all learned from Uncle Ben in Spiderman, with great power comes great responsibility. If you have never had the chance to be on the receiving end of a soulstone, it is easy to make a rookie mistake. While it is by no means complex, there are certain do's and don'ts that aren't always obvious. With that in mind, here are some things to remember if you are given a soulstone... If you are new to the soulstone business, odds are your warlock is too. If you have never played a warlock, you might assume that when a soulstone expires some kind of elaborate fireworks display appears in the warlock's UI, informing them that the group is screwed if they wipe if he doesn't conjure another stone. Without a proper mod, this is not the case. Odds are your new level 21 warlock friend doesn't have the fancy mod. So pay attention to your soulstone, and when you see it expire, or a minute or two before it expires, let your warlock know in party chat or in a /whisper. Your lock will usually appreciate it.

  • Forum Post of the Day: Instance travel ads

I can promise that this thread delivers. In post after post, players describe the best travel ads for each dungeon in the game. And while most of them don't encourage me to actually visit any of these places, but many of them did make me giggle, which makes it all worth the read. My favorites would have to be... Uldaman: Because migraines build character. Caverns of Time: Thrall is back and he's all out of bubblegum. Gnomeregan: Even Guildies Have To Draw The Line Somewhere Sunken Temple: Here There Be Dragons. OH DEAR GOD WHO PULLED ALL NINE OF THEM?!? Blackwing Lair: What's An Onyxia Scale Cloak?

If you've been playing (and trolling the forums) for any amount of time, you'll know that the argument made here -- for challenging, instanced, single-player content -- is not a new one. This thread has all the usual responses, ranging from definitions of "massively multiplayer" to suggestions that solo instances would be impossible to create to suggestions that class-specific solo instances would be perfect. However, there's a lot of good discussion in the thread -- highlighted by a post by Tseric attempting to explain why this type of content is not feasible. If it requires too much healing to complete, pure melee or casters are impeded. If it requires significant amounts of dps, you either have to spec and gear properly for one, single dungeon or pure dps classes simply have a leg up. If you can't tank or mitigate damage effectively...well, you're dead at the first pull. Therefore, if you reduce group size and composition to a single participant, the more generic and easy you have to make the dungeon. And of balancing nine class specific dungeons? Tseric quips, "Do you realize how much time that would take?" And you have to admit -- he's got a point. Would you rather see Blizzard spending their development time working on nine different variations of the same dungeon, or working on nine new dungeons everyone can see?Of course, as painful as my last PuG was, I might prefer the solo content anyway.

My priest has, in the past, done the first few pulls of Scholomance alone or with a friend in order to farm bone fragments, but I never made it past that four monster pull at the bottom of the first flight of stairs. This video, however, inspires me to try harder -- It's apparently doable.

There are a lot of interesting encounters throughout Azeroth, but some seem to be more memorable than others.  Certain raid bosses will always inspire players to gather around the corpse to take screenshots and display their accomplishment, but sometimes smaller encounters are more intense and exciting.  One of my favorites must be the fight on the top of the temple in Zul'Ferak, where you look down to see a mass of trolls grouping up at the bottom of the stairs - and knowing you're going to need to fight through all of them to escape.  What's the one fight you most remember?  An instance or a wandering elite?  Or maybe even a PvP kill - let's hear about them!

This video, Shadow of the Necropolis, gives us our first glimpse of action in the upcoming Naxxramas instance, included in the 1.11 patch, from the Blizzard previews at E3. Those are some seriously gnarly spiders...

You've run it ten or twenty times and you're still not bored; the drops are good and you've mastered its mobs. Solo or in a group, what's your instance of choice, and what makes it so good? The Deadmines would probably take the crown for me; despite being a low level instance, I managed to run through it first time with a seamless PuG, and now that I'm all grown up I revisit it for fun. On the flip side, The Stockades is probably one of the most boring instances I've done, but since it's the first time my druid got to tank an instance it holds a special place in my heart.
