FBI could use dead suspects' fingerprints to open iPhones

Having been denied by Apple, despite having a court order, the Federal Bureau of Investigations is quickly running out of options in its efforts to unlock one of the San Bernardino shooter's cell phones. They can't brute force the phone open for fear of the device wiping its data if they guess the wrong passcode too many times and many commercially available hacking tools require the phone already be unlocked. While the FBI is hamstrung in this specific investigation, the solution for similar cases in the future might instead lie with a mobile device's fingerprint reader.

  • iPhone 5s and 5c get a £100 price drop

Not really interested in Apple's new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus? How about a smaller iPhone with an even smaller price tag? That's exactly what's on the table after Apple cut the price of an unlocked iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c by £100 each following yesterday's event. That means can now pick up a 16GB or 32GB iPhone 5s for £459 or £499 respectively, while the price of the more colourful iPhone 5c (8GB) has dropped to £319. Although the Apple Watch won't be available until the new year, the company has said iPhones from the 5c up will support the new wearable, meaning you won't miss out if you decide later that you want a smaller screen on your wrist.

  • Walmart is selling the iPhone 5c for $0.79

If you're in the market for a new iPhone and you don't care about getting the latest model, Walmart has a great deal for you. Engadget is reporting that for the next 90 days Walmart will be selling the iPhone 5c at a staggeringly low $0.79, with a two-year contract through AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular, or Verizon. The iPhone 5s, Apple's current top of the line model, has also received a price drop of $20 meaning you can pick on up for just $79. With Apple's new product announcement just around the corner on September 9, it would make sense for retailers to start clearing out their stock of older model iPhones. If you've been holding onto your iPhone 4S for years and just want to make a gradual jump into the future, this is a great way to do it on a budget. This deal is only available in-stores for a limited time. Enjoy.

  • How different is Modern Combat 5 on a iPhone 4s and a 5c?

Modern Combat 5 has finally hit the iTunes store, bringing fiery action to your iOS devices. There's just one question you may still be asking yourself: how will it run on my phone. The folks at AppSpy have put together a comparison video showing how the title plays on the iPhone 4s and the iPhone 5c, and the answer is remarkable. While the 5c version is noticeably sharper than the same title running on a 4s, the graphics on the 4s are still incredibly impressive considering the title is running on a device nearly three years old. You can watch the comparison video below.

  • iPhone 5c growth outperformed the iPhone 5s last quarter

Apple doesn't break down its iPhone sales figures by model type, but Tim Cook during yesterday's earnings conference call provided a few interesting crumbs regarding iPhone 5c sales growth last quarter. I can tell you this. That if you look at the growth rates, we don't divide out each one but if you look at year-over-year growth rates and so this would be comparing the 5C to last year. It would be comparing the 4S, which was in the mid-tier. The growth in that sector was the highest growth during the quarter we just finished. In other words, iPhone 5c sales growth from the iPhone 4s during the same quarter a year-ago outpaced the growth Apple saw from last year's iPhone 5 to the iPhone 5s. "And so we are extremely happy with how it performed last quarter," Cook added. Of course, statistical growth in and of itself doesn't tell the entire story. For instance, it's extremely plausible that iPhone 4s sales during Apple's 2013 Q3 were much lower than anticipated, paving the way for even modest iPhone 5c sales to result in tremendous mid-tier growth. Nonetheless, the news is particularly interesting in light of the fact that many were quick to label the iPhone 5c a flop. Largely overshadowed by the flagship iPhone 5s, the iPhone 5c didn't get off the ground as impressively as some analysts were expecting. Indeed, even Tim Cook at one point noted that the percentage of folks interested in the 5s as opposed to the 5c was higher than Apple had anticipated. iPhone 5c demand, Cook intimated, "turned out to be different than we thought." But in recent months, the iPhone 5c has seemingly found its footing. Apple continues to advertise the device heavily in large cities, and it even outsold Samsung's flagship Galaxy S5 in Great Britain this past May. Sales figures aside, the genius behind the iPhone 5c is that it's really nothing more than a re-purposed iPhone 5. But slap a new name on it and provide users some color options and all of a sudden you're not buying an older-generation product, but rather a new device that's just a step below Apple's flagship iPhone 5s. It's a clever bit of product marketing.

  • Galaxy S5 beat out by iPhone 5c in its Great Britain debut

Sales of the iPhone 5c may have been a disappointment to many, but the European launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 proved that Apple's colorful plastic handset still has an edge on the competition. According to sales data from Kantar Worldpanel, the Galaxy S5 came in third place on the Great Britain sales charts behind the iPhone 5s, and -- I hope you're sitting down -- the iPhone 5c. That's pretty surprising, considering the smartphone OS marketshare distribution across Europe greatly favors Android, with over 73% of the region devoted to Google's platform and iOS scrounging up just 16.6% for itself. Of the European consumers who adopted the new Galaxy phone, 17% were former Apple customers, while the vast majority were existing Samsung users. Apple's recent decision to introduce an 8GB variant of the iPhone 5c with a slightly lower price seems to be paying off, at least in the United Kingdom. [via Cult of Mac]

It's that time of the year, folks. With iPhone 6 rumors steadily mounting, deals on current iPhone models are getting all the more attractive. Specifically, a 16 GB iPhone 5c will be available for just $29 with a two-year contract while the 16 GB iPhone 5s will set you back just $99. While Walmart ran a similar promotion this past March, Engadget relays that the current price drops are permanent.

Last March, Apple released an 8 GB iPhone 5c in China, Australia and select other European markets as an "... affordable option for markets where LTE is becoming more established." Today, the company has made the same unit available in India for 33,500 rupees, or approximately US$572 as of this writing. To kickstart the iPhone's introduction, customers will receive a free case for a limited time. During Apple's Q2 2014 financial conference call, CEO Tim Cook noted that iPhone sales in India had more than doubled. This should allow even more customers in that market to experience the Apple ecosystem.

The stylish and functional Twelve South HiRise iPhone 5/iPad mini stand (US$34.99) has been available since last year, so it was quite surprising when the company announced a change to that product. When I reviewed it last year, I found the HiRise to be both appealing and reasonably priced -- a true winner in my book. Well, what could the company do to make a great product even better? They've announced a new finish on the HiRise -- Tactical Black. Designed to look great with that Space Gray iPhone 5s or iPad, the new HiRise also looks darned good with a colorful iPhone 5c onboard. As with the previous HiRise, the new one adjusts to fit iPhones in cases so you don't have to "undress" your phone to charge it. It's compatible with any iPhone 5, iPad mini, or iPod touch that sports a Lightning port. The best iPhone stand on the market just got better, and we're going to celebrate by giving one away courtesy of Twelve South. That Mac Pro is still taking its sweet time getting to customers, and the 8 GB iPhone 5c reaches new countries in this morning's news roundup. Apple is now offering the 8 GB iPhone 5c in fourteen countries. Now customers in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal, Austria, Spain, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Switzerland can pick up the bargain device. The Mac Pro is still seeing significant shipping delays. As of this writing, those buying a new Mac Pro from Apple's online store can expect the device to arrive in four to six weeks. As Computer World points out, the Mac Pro was announced four months ago. The 2012 iMac had similar problems, but its delay was trimmed to one to three days after three months of availability. Apple has agreed to make the CTIA's request for a "kill switch" on its iPhones a reality. Apple won't have to do much work beyond what Find My iPhone already does to reach compliance. The switch, if you will, renders a lost or stolen iPhone useless remotely.

  • Apple explains why it released an 8GB iPhone 5c

    by
    Yoni Heisler

    03.18.2014

Apple today introduced an 8GB iPhone 5c model that's only available in China, Australia and select countries in Europe. And as one would expect, the lower-capacity model is just a smidge more affordable than the 16GB variant. In the wake of Apple's iPhone 5c shake-up, there have been no shortage of posts trying to find some strategic meaning behind the move, with most viewing the decision as an attempt to boost what may very well be tepid 5c sales figures. Earlier this morning, Apple actually addressed the idea behind the product introduction in a statement provided to Ina Fried of Re/Code. "The mid-tier iPhone segment is growing year over year and the 8GB model provides a more affordable option for markets where LTE is becoming more established," an Apple representative told Re/code. The iPhone 5c, unlike the iPhone 4s, which is also still sold, supports LTE networks. The report further adds that the lower capacity iPhone 5c is likely not being offered in the United States because US-based carriers already offer heavy subsidies on smartphones. That the iPhone 5c hasn't been selling up to Apple's expectations isn't exactly a closely guarded secret, with Tim Cook admitting as much during Apple's most recent earnings conference call. Recently, we compiled a number of reasons to possibly explain why the iPhone 5c hasn't been the hit Apple may have been hoping for.

  • Apple launches 8 GB iPhone 5c and relaunches 16 GB iPad 4, and other news for March 18, 2014

    by

    03.18.2014

As we mentioned this morning, Apple has officially launched an 8 GB version of the iPhone 5c. As of the time of this writing the 8 GB iPhone 5c still hasn't shown up in the US online store, but it is available in all European stores. In the UK store the 8 GB iPhone 5c has a price tag of £429, which is £40 cheaper than the 16 GB model. The 8 GB iPhone 5c is available in all colors. In addition to the release of an 8 GB iPhone 5c, Apple has also taken the step of re-releasing the 16 GB iPad 4, replacing the three-year-old iPad 2 as the low-price member of the full-size iPad family. The iPad 4 is now available in all online stores, retailing for US$399 for the Wi-Fi model and $529 for the Wi-Fi+Cellular model. The availability of both of these devices was rumored yesterday. The release of the new entry-level iPhone 5c is a sign that Apple is trying to boost sales of the device while also appealing to people who want an iPhone at a lower price point. The re-release of the iPad 4 coincides with Apple pulling the three-year-old iPad 2 from sale. As MacRumors notes: Meanwhile, the iPad 4 has been brought back into Apple's lineup after being removed in favor of the iPad Air last October. However, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in February that the company would shift from the iPad 2 to the iPad 4, as the latter sports Apple's A6X chip and 1GB memory compared to the former's A5 processor and 512 MB of memory. In other news: Google has updated the YouTube app with support for sharing entire playlists and improved commenting features. Facebook has updated its app with an updated design that makes it easier to post and share on the iPad. The Dropbox app has also received an upgrade. New features include improved illustrations and improved SSO for Dropbox for Business customers.

This morning Apple released an 8 GB iPhone 5c for customers in the UK, priced at £429. As the day progresses, the device has also shown up in the company's Australian and Chinese online stores. As of this writing, the 8 GB iPhone 5c is not available in the US online Apple store. The only difference between the 8 GB 5c and its counterparts is the storage capacity. All other hardware is the same. If you've been holding out for an even cheaper 5c, there you go.

The rumors are true, Apple is launching an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c. After internal documents from German carrier O2 clued us into a new variant of Apple's mid-tier phone, carriers across Europe have now begun taking orders for it. UK operator O2 and French provider SFR are offering the handset for free and one euro respectively on multi-year contracts, discounting it by more than £50 ($83) to tempt new customers. Apple has also added the new model to its online stores, pricing unlocked models at £429 ($714), which means you'll need to pay an extra £40 ($67) to double your storage. While the 8GB variant is available in China and Australia, it remains conspicuous in its absence from the company's US store. Apple has remained quiet regarding sales of its multi-colored iPhone, but today's price drop could certainly indicate sales didn't meet expectations.
