With the bomb that Iwata dropped back at GDC about Sega and Hudson being onboard with the Revolution's Virtual Console, Game Informer wanted to take a look back at the two companies' past offerings in the video game industry to determine exactly what we can expect to see from them come time the system launches. If anything, it's a nice history lesson for all you young whippersnappers who were born after the 16-bit age of gaming and a tear-inducing bit of nostalgia and hope for the rest of us. Who else wants to see a Bomberman build with online play?

If, like us, you were curious as to how Nintendo's expectedly hard drive-free Revolution was going to be able to compete with Sony's and Microsoft's drive-toting next-gen consoles, let your fears be allayed. In a recent CNN Money interview with Iwata-san, the N-man divulged that the Rev would come with an SD slot (which we'd heard) to complement its 512MB internal flash memory (for, you know, downloading games n' stuff), but that it'd also have USB ports for external storage solutions, like flash drives and hard drives. That's not going to be a huge boon if the Rev isn't going to have crazy media features like the 360 has and the PS3 is expected to, but it's still nice to know we're not gonna be left in the lurch on the storage thing.[Via Joystiq and PSFK]

MCV is reporting that the latest statements regarding a global launch of the Revolution from Mr. Iwata have been grossly misunderstood, a supposed Nintendo spokesperson told the site.“The comments have been taken out of context,” a Nintendo spokesperson told MCV. “What he’s actually saying is that we’re not holding a worldwide launch just because everyone else is doing one too. It’s just another re-iteration of the fact that we’re not looking at what Sony or Microsoft are doing."While deep down this Blogger hungers to believe this, the fact that this source is not named naturally elicits a healthy amount of skepticism. Considering Nintendo launched the DS in America first, this isn't something that is totally impossible, yet unless this comes from Mr. Iwata's mouth directly, we'll just chalk it up to speculation.

  • Revolution global launch not in the cards

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata recently spoke to Bloomberg during the Game Developer's Conference. In regards toward a global launch for the Revolution, Mr. Iwata said "We don't think it's necessary to do the simultaneous worldwide launch simply because others are doing this." Kudos Mr. Iwata...kudos. It's obvious that Nintendo strives to innovate and remain easily identified as the company attempting to evolve the industry beyond progressively better graphics and essentially define it for a new age, it's just nice to read these affirmations that we've selected the right company to stand behind once in awhile. However lacking in concrete information regarding the Revolution beyond the inclusion of a past competitor's games to its Virtual Console service, we at least now know that the Japanese will once again luck out over the rest of the world and will most likely receive the console first, while we're left to bathe in our salty, warm tears. • GDC: The "Iwata, drop the bomb" (-omb) guy

I saw this guy hanging outside the line for Satoru Iwata's keynote this afternoon and I'm just guessing that The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Sega Genesis and Turbo-Grafx 16 games weren't the bombs this Nintendo University alum was thinking about. He was probably waiting for something of the Nintendo GO or, better yet, the Nintendo ON variety. See also:GDC: The Nintendo keynote blow by blow

  • No longer the Nintendo Revolution?

John Houlihan of CVG reports Revolution could very well be changed come Thursday when Mr. Iwata makes his keynote speech during the on-going Game Developer's Conference. While it's true that Revolution was a codename for the console all along, it wouldn't be smart for Nintendo to go ahead and change the name as it has already saturated the media with it (and we've already made a website dedicated to the name Revolution). Hopefully tomorrow we'll get some actual news from Mr. Iwata so we aren't left speculating all the way to E3.
