If you think hooking your ride up with an in-car PC is 1337, or if you were impressed with Samsung's lineup of LED-backlit LCDs earlier today, you'll probably admire this one as well. For reasons unknown to mere men, a crafty car modder set out to not only install a water-cooled LED-backlit LCD into his ride, but to actually construct it. Taking a 12.1-inch widescreen display, he replaced the CCFL lamp with no fewer than 32 one-watt Luxeon LEDs, resulting in brightness akin to staring at the world's largest star. Additionally, he utilized a liquid-cooling setup which he later stated wasn't entirely necessary, but it does give you one more reason to boast. While we highly doubt the novice DIY crowd should try to replicate this without tons of dough and time to waste, be sure to click on through for a few more works-in-progress shots, or hit the read link for the full skinny.[Via Hack-A-Day]

Samsung is showing off their LED-backlit LCDs today at the ICDL 2007, or Int'l Conference and Exhibition on Display LEDs... where else. First up is their 30-inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel (WQXGA) resolution panel (pictured above) capable of 16.7M colors, 300cd/m2 brightness, 6ms response, 180-degee viewing angle, 900:1 contrast ratio, and covers 111% of NTSC color gamut. That panel will likely turn up in Samsung's own SyncMaster lineup as well as being repackaged and sold by Dell, Apple, HP and others currently in the 30-inch monitor game. Also on display is a 15.4-inch LED-backlit LCD sporting a 1440 x 900 resolution, 5.8-mm thinness, and 3.1W power consumption making it suitable for all the new laptops. This panel manages 262k colors and a 330cd/m2 brightness while covering 45% of NTSC color gamut. Last up is a bump to that 40-inch LE40M91 we saw at IFA which brings a 500 cd/m2 brightness, 180-degree viewing angle, and relatively meager 1366 x 768 pixel resolution offset by a smokin' 100,000:1 contrast ratio through the use of "local dimming" LEDs -- a process whereby the backlighting is effectively shut off in dark areas to generate true black. Samsung plans to include these local dimming LEDs in their LCD TVs shipping this year. Great... prices and dates now please? Apparently, Asus didn't have quite enough fun dishing out swank new laptop gear at CES, as the firm is now prepared to unveil its first LED-backlit machine at this year's CeBIT Show in Hanover, Germany. The ultralight U1F weighs in at just 2.2-pounds, and sports an 11.1-inch WXGA+ LED-backlit screen, steel edges, leather-clad palm rests, black motif, an ultra-low voltage Intel Core Duo processor, and of course, will come pre-loaded with Windows Vista. Unfortunately, Asus isn't spilling any more details on this one until the time is just right, but hopefully this noticeable move towards LED-backlit lappies will persuade a few other firms out there to follow suit, and soon.[Via Laptoping]

  • LG / Philips readying LED-based LCD HDTVs?

As if every other major television manufacturer hasn't been touting LED-based sets for quite some time, LG / Philips are purportedly reading a 47-inch LED-backlit LCD to be unleashed "as early as the second quarter" of this year, and if things pan out, it'll sport a whopping 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution as well. Interestingly, it seems that the set might appear first under the Philips brand name, with an LG flavor to emerge shortly thereafter. Of course, we've no idea how serious the two firms are on keeping this 2Q forecast a reality, nor how much dough it'll demand when (if?) it finally hits the showroom floor, but with specs like this, a ship date couldn't come soon enough.

For those patiently awaiting the release of the first LED backlit HDTVs, your time draws near, friends. Step aside, NuVision -- Samsung's officially posted their HL-S5679W LED-backlit 1080p DLP HDTV, which should result in a 20,000 hour lifespan with faster startups and even better color using the already infamous colormongering DLP system. You'll also get such features as dual HDMI inputs, a 4,000:1 contrast ratio picture, and Samsung's DNIe Digital Natural Image Engine. Perhaps most surprisingly, however, is the 56-incher can be found listed online for less than $4,000, even if it is still in "coming soon" status.[Via HD Beat]
