Before we break out the goods, let's just clarify: these are launch window titles. Meaning they'll come out within the first few months of the Wii's release. They may or may not be taking up shelf space on launch day. That said, Electronic Arts is supporting the Wii launch window with six titles, including a few offerings from wildly popular franchises like Madden and Tiger Woods PGA Tour. These titles were already announced for the Wii, but EA confirmed all six for the launch window at in Leipzig. Fresh from Leipzig, this new Red Steel trailer makes us wanna grab a shotty and get our vengeance on. Still, we are a little disappointed ... this new ad follows the same format of this older Red Steel trailer. We get it already -- it's immersive. And there's a guy on a roof with a sword. But all grumbling aside, we're ready to get into the game. Just watch that aquarium.

Leipzig, Germany... home of the Games Convention... but not the PS3. It's got videos, and pretty television screens, seats, logos... but no controllers, no tangible hardware. Why? Saving up their ammunition for the homeland show -- the Tokyo Game Show, possibly. Smart move? It certainly won't help to solidify support among German gamers. Definitely (spelled it right!) going to have to show us everything they've got in September. You can see their fun little area in a picture gallery made before the show started. Now that would be cool to have in your home/apartment/dreams. Good seating. Lacking tables, though.Rumors were that Sony would make some big announcement at the GC, but there's not much buzz going around yet save some wild speculation. When something comes up, it'll definitely (spelled it right again!) be here. If nothing surfaces, we'll assume all cannons will fire off the starboard side in September.

  • Nintendo unveils Mario Strikers and Battalion Wars sequels at Leipzig, little else [update 2]

And the first new game to be marched onto the stage at the Leipzig Games Convention is Mario Strikers Charged, a Wii sequel to Mario's Gamecube exercise in frantic ball kicking. Eurogamer reports that the game is visually similar to the previous entry, but that it now sports special moves for the Wiimote. You can seemingly hold the Wii controller up to block incoming shots with your hands, though more enterprising players will surely have a lot more fun (and awkward injuries) strapping the wiimote to a foot and going ballistic. Battalion Wars 2 -- as in BWii -- was also announced and is expected to be playable on the show floor. No new information on it yet, but rest assured that we'll keep you updated. That being the opposite of what Nintendo has done regarding Wii launch information, of course. Many expected their "Wii Prove Our Promise" keynote to toss a stick of dynamite into the Wii rumor mil and blow the constant launch date hearsay and price pontification to unrecognizable smithereens, but Nintendo has deemed it necessary to keep people in the dark for a little bit longer. We'll get you for this, Iwata.[Update: One other minor announcement -- Europe gets the gloriously pink DS Lite on October 27th.][Update: There's some video footage now up of the game. Check it out here and after the break.]

To get you psyched for tomorrow's keynote speech from Nintendo, 1up has posted some early pictures and video footage from all over the show floor. Perhaps the venue isn't quite as grand as E3, but it doesn't seem as though any company is taking this event lightly. If you look closely above, you can see "Dual Screen" setups using large LCD displays. Especially cool is the tunnel walkway to reach Nintendo's booth...check it out after the jump.

In being a blog, Wii Fanboy is charged with keeping you up to date on all the current and pertinent information revolving around Nintendo's latest and greatest console. However, searching through our archives for past information can be a bit of a chore at times. That's why we love it when dedicated individuals such as forum poster i0n go above and beyond to chronicle all of the known information on the system. In answering everything from general questions regarding color availability down to explaining what the Virtual Console service is, i0n has not only done a great service for the Wii community, but proven that he is deserving to have his effort shown to one and all. We thank you for the hard work you put into this i0n and hope it answers any of the questions you fine readers out there might still have. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy, consider it a refresher course before Nintendo's keynote at Leipzig tomorrow.

  • EA chief backs up $170 price rumor...kinda

    08.22.2006

Executive VP and COO of EA's worldwide studios David Gardner recently backed up claims of a $170 equivalent price for the console in Japan. Citing that he "heard in Japan that the price is about $170," David Gardner has little in the way of concrete evidence to be submitting this information to GamesIndustry.biz. Either that, or he's just regurgitating what the recent financial report from NikkoCitigroup stated. So what does this mean? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Now, we're all sick and tired of hungrily biting at every little morsel of meat that is dangled in front of us, but this dry spell has made us all the more susceptible to these kind of "he said, she said" stories. Hopefully, with this week's keynote at the Leipzig Games Convention and the unveiling of new titles for the console, we won't have to be this way anymore and Nintendo will finally provide us with the sustenance we've so desperately needed these past few months.[Via Joystiq]

  • European PS2 price drop and pretty new pink model [update 1]

    08.21.2006

Following April's North American PS2 price drop, Sony has announced a European price drop for their top-selling console juggernaut. The formerly €149.99 and £104.99 prices will be lowered to €129.99 and £94.99 respectively, still a good deal more expensive than the $130 US asking price. They've also lowered the price of the Memory Card to €19.99. While this isn't quite the budget pricing we imagine the non-PS2-owner is waiting for, Sony has readied another flank in their assault on these stubborn holdouts. The formula has worked disturbingly well for companies like Nintendo and Apple: a fresh coat of paint and you've opened up a whole new customer base. The new Pink PlayStation 2 will debut at the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany, August 23-27th. This sexy little thing is going out dancing with a pair of Dual Shock controllers and a Memory Card, and they're all wearing their prettiest matching pink outfits. And, UK-only, they'll be joining up with SingStar Pop at the karaoke club! Just how much will this little bundle of fun cost? €159.99 or £129.99 in UK (bundled with SingStar Pop). Seriously, resistance is futile Europe.[Update: These things come in threes. It looks like the PS2 isn't the only console getting the pink treatment. Those rumors (from last year!) may have been premature, but Sony is finally making a pink PSP! Joy! It will be available Oct. 27th in Europe only for €229, or £169. They're also employing colorfully-named popstress P!nk to pimp their pink PSPs. We can think of a lot of things we'd rather have Sony invest their efforts in PSP-wise than a pink version. Just saying.]Read - SCEE Announces Introduction of Pink PS2Read - SCEE Announces New Price for PS2Read - A pink PSP to match the PS2

  • A public no-go at Leipzig

The upcoming Leipzig Games Convention (Nintendo's keynote is scheduled for August 23rd) is the current hotbed of upcoming Wii information, with rumors flying left and right that the final launch details and pricing will be unveiled at the German trade show. We've known that Nintendo will be showing off some new Wii games there, and being open to the public, certainly some of our European readers were gearing up to make the trek to Germany. Oh, but wait, in the distance...yep. It's the black cloud of despair. Yes, it turns out that the Wii will not be playable to the general public during the show. Despite Nintendo's attitude of wanting as many people to get their hands on it as possible, it appears that not enough proper game journalists and members of the media were able to brave the 6+ hour lines at E3; the console will only be playable in private rooms that require an invitation from Nintendo. Oh well. Remember, stalwart fans, though we don't know the specific date of release, each second that passes brings us closer still...

  • Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops previewed

The first canonical Metal Gear Solid portable game was unveiled at E3 earlier this year. The idea of a real non-Acid non-graphic novel Metal Gear has made it one of the most-wanted games for the system, even without too much information to work with. The unofficial Metal Gear Solid site has a new preview, with a few new screenshots. The game takes place six years after Snake Eater, and has Big Boss arrested after FOX Unit begins a revolt in South America. With the help of his comrades in the FOXHOUND Unit, it will be their responsibility to stop the bad guys from using their "ultimate weapon." This game will be a crucial part of the Metal Gear series' storyline, as it'll explain how Big Boss went from good guy to bad guy in Metal Gear. With cutscenes in the same style of the Digital Graphic Novel, Portable Ops seems like it'll be an interesting ride, to say the least.Portable Ops will feature a more distant camera so that players have a better view of their surroundings. Interestingly, it won't be a one-man sneaking mission anymore: you'll recruit and command other soldiers to help you take on your missions. Not only will you have generic soldiers at your disposal, but you'll also get more familiar faces, like Ocelot to join you. But be careful, in Fire Emblem style, if a character dies, they're dead for the rest of the game. There's also multiplayer, in which you can trade your partners ala Pokemon. According to the unofficial site, new trailers for Metal Gear Solid 4 and Portable Ops will be shown at Leipzig Games Convention, so expect more info very soon.[Via 1UP Boards]

In case you haven't heard, Capcom will debut Lost Planet's multi-player gameplay at the Leipzig Game Convention next month. A few lucky lost souls will get to play 4 on 4 matches showcasing one map and mode. Hey, since we got our hands on the single-player demo pretty early, they might as well throw this one on XBLM too.

Capcom has announced plans to unveil Lost Planet's multiplayer at GC 2006 in Leipzig next month. Attendees will be given a chance to test out the game's 4v4 team battle mode. Sounds like standard fare. So what's the catch?Capcom's Hiroshi Tobisawa reports that over 400,000 Xbox Live users have downloaded the single-player demo. If the company hopes to sell as many retail versions of the game, the development team would do well to distinguish Lost Planet's online modes. Here's to hoping Xbox Live multiplayer isn't merely an afterthought tacked on to spruce up the list of gameplay features on the back of the box.
