  • Installing a Vista CableCARD Media Center PC (part 1): Fiasco!

How many people does it take to install a Vista CableCARD-enabled Media Center PC?The answer is six. Or at least it would be six if the installation had actually been successful. Here's the backstory: Just like a lot of you out there, we've been lusting after a CableCARD-enabled Media Center PC for years (or at least it seems like years). So ever since the first Vista betas became available we've been hassling Microsoft to hook us up with a CableCARD-enabled Media Center to test out. We figured at the very least we'd be able to get our hands on one right after Vista launched, but there were numerous delays because of CableLabs' requirement that they be able to certify every CableCARD-enabled device and some apparent technical issues with getting Digital Cable Tuners to work properly. [The funny thing is that from a technical standpoint getting a Media Center PC to handle digital cable isn't all that complicated; it's the cable industry's obsession with DRMing and locking down digital cable streams that messes everything up. And we got to see first-hand just how screwed up things can get when you make it more difficult than it needs to be for different components to work together.]Anyway, a few weeks ago we finally got the word that they were ready to send us a review unit – but that they wanted to fly a team of people out from Redmond (and bringing along a team of Time Warner Cable techs) to get us all set up. Normally we'd balk and just tell 'em what we tell everyone else – namely, that we're pretty damn good with gadgets and can set this stuff up ourselves – but the prospect of having a small army of people in our tiny NYC apartment just to set up one PC was too good to pass up.What follows is a minute-by-minute account of how what should have been a 15-minute install job turned into a multi-day fiasco that has yet to be resolved.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Live_Coverage_of_Nintendo_s_GDC_Keynote_2'; 10:07 a.m.: We're sitting at the Miyamoto keynote. We count five screens of nine Wii logos apiece, totaling 45 Wii logos. That's a lot of Wii! The podium glows blue with a white Nintendo logo and the background shows an effervescent blue cloud that fits accordingly to the inoffensive electronic beats. 10:08 a.m.: More Daft Punk, just like yesterday's Sony keynote -- only this time, it's the original. Perhaps it's a subtle allusion how Nintendo and Sony view each other -- old-school originality vs. technically proficient remixing. Yes, we went there.10:20 a.m.: A GDC helper, um, person informs us to make more efficient use of our seating positions. "The place is going to be packed," he says. People nod right before averting their eyes from the garish green shirt he's wearing. 10:25 a.m.: People continue to pour in and fill up the cheap seats. Luckily, prestigious press people like us get reserved space up front. Suckers!

10:20 a.m.: We're being let in and taking our seats now.10:30 a.m.: We've taken our seats, but the press is still milling about. Coldplay is playing over the sound system, a PlayStation logo is on the screen, and giant props from the just-announced-this-morning LittleBigPlanet flank both sides of the massive screen.10:32 a.m.: On the left side of the stage there's a large tree--pretty much life-size--that looks like it's made out of a glob of clay, the right side has a gear rotating, about the same size as the tree. Is it a water wheel? Colored lights glaze across the ceiling in maroon, greens, and blues. 10:33 a.m.: The room fits about 5,000 people, it will be full. A many-iterations removed remix of an LCD Soundsystem song is playing

We're at Microsoft's "The Evolution of RPG Development" panel, ready to liveblog the goings on. The panelists are Ray Muzyka (Bioware, Mass Effect), Hironobu Sakaguchi (Mistwalker, Blue Dragon), and Peter Molyneux (Lionhead, Fable 2) and is moderated by GameHead's Geoff Keighley. Stick with us as we update this post.4:35pm PT - Keighley starts by asking these RPG icons what the difference is between older and newer RPGs, and how they've evolved. Sakaguchi: The graphics allow for players to see the true emotion behind the character.Molyneux: RPGs are the first game I ever played, Wizardry on the Apple. I lost my first girlfriend to it. The graphics have changed. It's not simple and is much more significant, though the structure has not changed. There have been some evolutions but they're still recognizable back then and now. There are opportunities for changes. "I don't know who's going to do it."

The game is on! Keep refreshing this page for a steady stream of updates. The keynote should get rolling sometime after 9am PST.7:54am - We're here, standing in line waiting to get in. People have been camped out since 9pm last night, there are at least three or four thousand people here minimum. Security detail is unreal.8:11am - Paul Otellini and the CEO of Quanta are here, in the VIP line.8:23am - Yup, Apple Store is down!8:56am - We're in! Almost the same seat as last time we did this.8:57am - Everyone's shuffling in -- including Jobs' family, who just rolled past. When the press barrier came down it was a mad rush to the elevator, people being trampled.

Welcome to the TUAW liveblog for Macworld 2007. Here's where you'll find all our updates, so open a window with this post and keep refreshing as needed. There is no "auto update" on TUAW so unless you refresh (please be gentle!) the page will not change. 11:10 PT. John and Steve hug. No "one more thing" 11:05 PT. What we didn't see. Leopard ship date. iWork. iLife. Core 2 Duo mini. Oct-core pro's. Universal Apps. High Def at the iTunes store. Any computer hardware outside the new iPhone. .Mac updates or revisions. Adobe. 11:00 PT. Steve cheers his employees. Points out the engineers, other employees, and their families. And cheers for them. So dang cool! "And we've got a really special treat today." John Mayer alert. Again. Mayer has 5 Grammy nominations this year. (He takes the stage. Starts playing solo. The song might be "Gravity" but David doesn't recognize it.) Mayer: "Steve Jobs and Apple Inc... just make life more fun. Just the opposite of terrorism." Now playing "Waiting on the World to Change." 10:55 PT. The Mobile Market Steve: "We come from different worlds and yet we have worked wonderfully together. We love these guys." And then Steve's "clicker" dies. And a lot of people backstage start scrambling. And cursing. And someone in the audience shouts: "BINGO!" Steve tells a story about his misspent youth with the Woz to pass the time as technicians see their pink slips dance before their eyes. 26 Million game consoles in 2006. 957 mobile phones in 2006. Goal: 1% of market share = 10 million iPhones in 2008. "Today we've added to the Mac, ipod, Apple TV and iPhone. The Mac is the only one you really think of as a computer". So Apple is going to drop "Computer" from their name. Apple is now "Apple Inc." Because they're all grown up and a real company and it's time to discard that childish "computer" thing anyway. "I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been - Wayne Gretsky. This is all presumably part of the deal that they hammered out with Apple Music and the Beatles.

12:15 am - We're all seated and situated. The theater is huge with three mezzanines and 3,400 seat capacity.12:17 am - We're sitting in the Kodak theater waiting for the press corps, VIPs, and assorted industry folk to file in, ever so slowly. Pictochat sessions are starting to fill up as people take their seats and whip out their portables.  The announcer just told us to turn off all wireless and bluetooth devices before the presentation begins -- could that be so that our bluetooth doesn't interfere with the Wii's wireless capabilities? Sounds like a hint to us.

Still waiting in line. We are still making our way over, stay tuned ...4:36 - The line is moving. According to EuroGamer, Hideo Kojima is "stuck in the queue." Should have something for ya soon ...4:42 - We are sitting down, getting ready to go.4:49 - Everyone's still filing into Stage 15 on the Sony backlot. Everyone's expectant and the mood is generally upbeat. The house lights are on full, so it'll still be a few minutes before anything official starts. In the background, Sony's been playing some hardcore gangsta rap: we note this because Nintendo would never, ever play that music.  The rap song (which we failed to identify) was followed by Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean." The music is eclectic, we're hoping the games line up is similarly so.
