It's been a while since we last spoke of Mabinogi, but that doesn't mean that Nexon has stopped developing it. In fact, the game's grown a bit, and offers players a new Generation (the Mabinogi equivalent of Chapters) in Paladin. The new content features a new town, Emain Macha (continuing the Celtic theme), new dungeons, new equipment and spells, and the eponymous Paladin abilities. If you have no knowledge of what Mabinogi's all about, you can check out our First Impressions piece for ideas on what to expect. Herald in the next generation with Paladin![Thanks, Robert!]

The Vancouver International Digital Festival, or VIDFEST, is an event for digital media professionals. This covers all aspects of media, including animation, Web 2.0, and gaming. Nexon, makers of Maple Story and Mabinogi, among others, will have a presence there, and in fact have managed to get Chris Anderson, Wired magazine editor -in-chief, and author of The Long Tail and the upcoming Free: Why $0.00 is the Future of Business to speak at the keynote address on the 23rd of May.It's easy to see the connection; Nexon has proved that the free-to-play/microtransactions model can be a successful one. American MMOs are still reluctant to try this out, preferring the standard subscription model instead. Perhaps Anderson can sway the hearts and minds of the captains of the digital industry?[Thanks, Robert!]

  • Nexon's Min Kim on the importance of Target to free to play gaming

Today Gamasutra has up a massive interview with Min Kim, public face for the Korean gaming powerhouse Nexon. Kim has spoken on numerous occasions at various industry events on overcoming challenges for free to play gaming. Those challenges have translated into huge opportunities, with games like MapleStory, Kart Rider, Mabinogi, and Audition earning Nexon big money. According to Kim, the microtransaction business model the company uses across its titles is responsible for that success. Many other MMO developers have attempted to emulate that success, but their entrenched position 'since the late 90s', has made that difficult. Some of Kim's most interesting statements surround their interactions with brick-and-mortar retail outlets. "We didn't really take off until we got the cards into Target and Best Buy and 7-Eleven. Over 50 percent of our player base doesn't have access to plastic, between 13 and 17. They just couldn't pay, so we'd effectively lose more than half our business. So that payment side is, I think, one of the biggest battles that people will fight." He goes on to discuss the possibility of Nexon games on the Xbox 360, the role of games in South Korea, and the misconceptions Western developers have when entering the free-to-play marketplace.

  • First Impressions: Mabinogi

Mabinogi is an engaging MMO by Nexon, the makers of Maple Story, Audition, and Kart Rider. The name is derived from the Mabinogion, a collection of old Welsh stories. In that sense, it's well-named; Mabinogi is billed as 'your fantasy life', and much of what happens in the game follows a gentle, pastoral atmosphere -- even the combat, to a certain degree. We had the chance to check this out, now that it's in open beta, and here's what we found. Keep in mind that this is not a guide -- we have no insider knowledge to report. This is merely a record of our opinions and experience playing this game for the first few hours. Excelsior!%Gallery-18335%

On March 27th, Nexon America will launch the North American version of Mabinogi, the wildly popular MMO that has, until now, been commercially available only in Asia. This launch will bring a whole host of new features, including the opening of the Nexon Cash Shop, where players can get their hands on microtransaction-enabled items to enhance their 'Fantasy Life'. While Mabinogi will still be free-to-play, upgrading to one of three monthly fee packages will also allow the player to participate in the mainstream storyline, which will advance through each generation of the game.Additionally, today's the last day for players to enter one of 3 contests to win fabulous prizes. The first contest goes to high level players, to reward their ongoing participation in the game. The winner will receive a GeForce 9600GT 512MB DDR3 video card, with 20 other winners receiving 14,000 in Nexon cash. [Thanks, Robert!]

  • FilePlanet IP Blocks download; thinks domestic computer is foreign

Okay, the only thing that got me through Wednesday, a day fraught with meetings, numberless revisions, and a never-ending cold, was the thought that I'd be playing the Mabinogi open beta that night. So I visited the homepage, only to be told that the client was exclusively available to FilePlanet users. Fine, I'm a FP user, I'll get it there. Once there, I clicked the download link, only to be told 'Sorry, this program is for North American users only!'Now, I've been accused in the past of not living in reality, and that's an argument with some merit to it. But my corpus has always inhabited North America; indeed, I live in San Francisco, which, unless FP knows something about a new secession that I'm unaware of, is located in California, which is one of the United States. Where does FP think I live?Running it down reveals that FP's IP Blocker seems to think that while my home computer resides somewhere outside of North America, trying access from my work computer works fine. Just in case, however, I'll be downloading the client directly from Nexon. One night of downloadus frustrationis is quite enough.

Nexon, maker of Maple Story and other, weirder MMOs, has announced that their intriguing title Mabinogi will hit North America with an open beta on March 5th. However, this is for residents of North America only; gamers in Europe and Australia will be s.o.l. [note: adult language] until such time as Nexon feels they're ready to hit the rest of the world. There's apparently more to Mabinogi than previously suspected -- more than just aging the character over weeks, time is a much more involved element to the game. The storyline itself will evolve over generations, and a character's diet also affects its appearance. I'm all crazygonuts excited to play this, so expect a First Impressions from me shortly after launch! And make sure you check out the videos on their website -- they're short tutorials on how to get around and do things in the world, presented by a girl and her sheep. While a little broad in its humor, it's still cute and has some good tips in between the silliness.

Fileplanet's Free MMO Club has exclusive beta access to the Mabinogi English (semi?) closed beta for Fileplanet users. North America only at the moment, however. If you want to be a part of the latest cute free-to-play MMO effort from Nexon, get over there and get started. If you're not sure what you're getting into with Mabinogi, check out the trailer here. If, like me, you're not in North America I'd recommend stamping your feet and pouting. It may not help all that much, but it's more satisfying than you might think.

  • Mabinogi hacked by a 16-year-old for $325K of virtual currency

A sixteen-year old boy allegedly hacked the website of Nexon Japan, and made off with about $325k worth of game points for Mabinogi, a free-to-play MMO that's inspired by Celtic mythology (and on its way to North America soon). He reportedly was able to obtain the password of a former Nexon employee, and then used that info to log on to the game servers and load himself up with virtual cash. Some of which apparently then turned into real cash, as he was able to sell it (as least that's what it seems like) for "web money," which he used to buy books and other software. The bottom line here seems to be not that the kid is a genius, but that the company and/or its employee made a dumb mistake, allowing the password to get nabbed by simple hacking software. No word on what punishment, if any, the kid faces, but Nexon claims they've "re-evaluated" their security software, and created a "24-hour monitoring system." Well that's good -- when they get hacked again, at least they'll be able to monitor it.

  • Nexon bringing Mabinogi state-side

Worlds in Motion is carrying the news that Mabinogi is coming to the US. The games features a whacked-out version of Celtic/Welsh mythology, cel-shaded graphics and (like most Nexon titles) will be a free-to-play adventure. The post also notes Mabinogi's numerous departures from both the MMO- and Nexon-norms. The game's 3D graphics and fairly standard style of combat set it apart from most of Nexon's other games. Likewise, Mabinogi's unique 'growing up' mechanic sets it apart from the usually static reality of MMO avatars.In-game characters age over the course of weeks, and can engage in numerous activities besides the hack and slash of gameplay. Alternate games include actual music composition, cooking, farming, and working with a spouse to maintain a household.Beta service for the game will begin at the end of the month.

  • Korean devs get busy: MapleStory DS, Mabinogi XBox 360 port in '08

Time for your dose of Korean MMO-ness.Nexon, a publisher of MapleStory, talked to Gamasutra about the upcoming MapleStory port for the DS, and about an XBox 360 port of the thus-far-Korean-only PC MMO Mabinogi. MapleStory DS development is going well and should see a Korean release in mid-2008. It will probably come to the West some time after that. The game is similar to the PC version, but only supports four players via Wi-Fi.Mabinogi is a traditional anime-style MMORPG. It's had some success in the Korean market but no exposure at all in North America or Europe. Nexon plans to port the game to the XBox 360. As Gamasutra points out, the Korean market for the XBox 360 is extremely small, so we may be able to assume this means the 360 version of Mabinogi will be arriving in Western markets somewhere down the line.
