Update: Shacknews reports World at War's Map Pack 1 DLC has sold over 1 million downloads across both the Xbox 360 and PS3 since launch.According to a press release, DLC for Call of Duty: World at War has set a first week sales record on Xbox Live Marketplace. Proving you don't need a marketing team to dream up whimsical names to sell product, Map Pack 1 has been downloaded ... well, the exact number is unclear, but it's apparently a lot. In fact, since the DLC's release, over 150 million multiplayer sessions have been played. The Call of Duty franchise isn't new to the Xbox DLC record book, as Modern Warfare's Variety Map Pack previously shattered records with over 1 million downloads within the first 9 days of release. World at War - Map Pack 1 (which leads us to believe more is on the way) is available now for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for 800 / $9.99.

  • Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena getting DLC map pack

Fans of the surprisingly well-crafted Escape from Butcher Bay have likely been salivating over the brutal possibilities offered by the multiplayer mode featured in its successor, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. With six different gameplay modes and 15 levels to choose from, the "shiv-happy" among you will probably have enough to keep yourselves busy for quite some time -- just in case, developer Starbreeze Studios will reportedly be dropping a five-map DLC pack some time after the game's release.Little is known about the pricing, release schedule or arrangement of these extra maps, but given the gaming community's lack of enthusiasm for DLC that's announced for yet-to-be-released games, we suggest the additional levels have some extremely catchy titles. We suggest Shanktown, Knifewound Central, Laceration Station, or Stabbythroat Junction.

The first piece of downloadable content for Call of Duty: World at War is now available on Xbox Live and (coming later today on) PSN. For 800 ($9.99), you can pick up four new maps for Activision's WWII shooter: "Station," a close-quarters underground encounter; "Nightfire," a large battlefield depicting a bombed-out Berlin; "Knee Deep," a huge, jungle-based scenario; and "Verrückt," the promised Nazombie expansion, which, aside from meriting its own trailer (posted after the jump), contains additional weapons, Perks-a-Cola machines and "electroshock defenses." Man, we had no idea history could be so totally awesome.

Ubisoft recently released a video explaining some of the major changes included in their upcoming free expansion to Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and we think it's a fairly safe bet that fans will be pleased. Included in said trailer is a look at the much-requested additions that should make Call of Duty 4 feel sincerely flattered, such as the new grenade indicator and post-elite ranks, as well as the three "new" (see: re-lit and re-textured) maps which will also be made available. Also included are details concerning the new "High Stakes" mode, where health regeneration will be disabled, and where players will amass extra experience points by verbally disparaging the skills of their Low Stakes brethren. We can't wait!

Okay, stay with us for this one. Remember that Veteran Map Pack for Army of Two that's due out tomorrow? It's been delayed. At least, it has in America. In a strange twist of fate Europeans will see it arrive on the PSN Store tomorrow as planned while their cousins across the pond will have to wait a while before getting their hands on it. There's no word on when it will be available in America, but hopefully it should be up next week. Maybe. For more info on what the map pack contains, check out our post from earlier today.

Army of Two fans who have played the game to death have something to look forward to this week. A map pack will be made available on the US and EU PlayStation Stores this Thursday. The pack will contain two new co-op maps as well as an "enhanced" versus map. The best thing about it? It's completely free. As much as we appreciate that, we're still waiting for the patch which will finally allow us to play with our buddies across the pond. The Veteran Map Pack will allow players to venture into a subway station in Kiev as well as returning to SSC headquarters in Miami. Not only that, but it will include "destructible objects that were not available in the retail version." We've never turned down more stuff to blow up, that's for sure. [Via Press Release]

  • Infinity Ward reassures Call of Duty 4 map pack coming this week

So it turns out the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack is coming out this week, after all. Despite the official COD4 Game of the Year website decreeing an April 10 release date for the downloadable content, Infinity Ward's blogger extraordinaire fourzerotwo posted reassurances today that the map pack is "NOT delayed" (his emphasis) and that there's a good chance the maps will be available tomorrow night or early Friday. "For those of you asking when you should take off work, I'd take off Friday," he said. It's a good thing we at Joystiq can work and play Call of Duty 4 (we're spoiled like that ... and ambidextrous). For those with the Game of the Year Edition, the provided tokens will work as soon as the maps become available.

Capcom just announced that starting this Friday, July 20th, both Lost Planet Map Packs #1 and #2 will be available on the Marketplace for free due to PC users getting free access to them. These four maps together previously retailed for 800 Microsoft points in total and include maps Radar Field, Island 902, Hive Complex and Trial Point. But be sure to note that Map Pack #3 is not part of this free offer and will still cost you 400 Microsoft points. Capcom also announced that an auto update should be released sometime this month to fix the multiplayer connectivity issues. Enjoy your newly free maps and be a little jealous that you can't have the PC exclusive Mega Man skin.[Via Major Nelson]

Capcom just announced a third map pack for Lost Planet today featuring three spiffy new maps. Those are the details, now onto the media! Check out the Lost Planet Map Pack #3 gallery below featuring screenshots from the new maps as well as fly through videos embedded after the break. And what's up with the Lost Technology map? It's so 8-bit, it's very LEGO'esque, and is crazy in a fun over the top kind of way. Take a look and judge it yourself.%Gallery-4014%

  • Gears of War multiplayer problems: where is everyone?

    05.05.2007

[UPDATE: this appears to be system wide across Xbox Live with other games being affected as well. As several people have pointed out, it could be tied to the imminent Dashboard update. We've contacted Microsoft for some answers.]This is one of those things we experienced firsthand, and thought "Gee, we wonder if people are talking about this on the internet." We were right. Ah yes, the internet, where everyone (including us) turns to when there's a problem with anything. If you have a doctor who looks up your ailments on Wikipedia, you might want a second opinion.Anyhow, we downloaded the new Gears of War map pack yesterday, and jumped into multiplayer to get some game on. However, every time we searched for games, usually only one or two would show up. What the heck? Normally you'll have tons of games listed, so there must be something going on. We've emailed Epic for an answer, but until then we remain frag-inhibited. The one or two matches that do show up play fine, but we want some options to choose from.

The new Halo 2 maps Tombstone and Desolation have been released for like, what, 30 hours and are already being torn apart. Over at Halo.bungie.org the legendary Mr. Wu posted a bunch of links cataloging all the glitches and easter eggs surrounding the two new maps, including an original Halo pistol sighting. And yes, you can pick it up via modding. People have even found a way to get out of the map in Tombstone, avoiding the instant kill barriers that float above head. Poor new Halo 2 maps ... you didn't even stand a chance.

We have a slew of screenshots and concept artwork from the upcoming Halo 2 map pack for you, in a joy-filled Joystiq gallery. The new maps, Desolation and Tombstone, are less than a week away ... but that still gives you plenty of time to study these and try to come up with some kind of strategy for action. They're both pretty wide-open maps, and does that giant crane in Tombstone actually do anything? Looks like it might drop fusion cores, although we're hoping you can crush people with it, Ivan Drago style. %Gallery-2368%

  • New Lost Planet multiplayer maps released

Fresh from the developer oven arrives two new Lost Planet multiplayer maps for download off of the XBLM. The multiplayer map pack #1 will include the two new maps "Radar Field" and "Island 902" and will set you back 400 Microsoft Points. So, according to our sixth grade math skills, that works out to be around $2.50 per multiplayer map. Are you willing to pay over $2 for a multiplayer map or does that just seem a tad ridiculous? It's kind of a hard pill to swallow since we received two free maps for Gears a few months ago ... although it was sponsored by the Discovery Channel. No matter, anyone feeling the squeeze of the corporate machine on this purchase?

One week following the botched delivery of Call of Duty 3's 'Valor Map Pack,' we receive word that Treyarch and Microsoft will attempt to re-release the premium content in the "very near future." While it's not much of a consolation to Xbox Livers who've already dropped $10 on the map pack, a new patch will also be released, alongside the fixed content. The patch will address two reoccurring issues: Being booted to the menu screen when the lobby countdown reaches zero (in ranked matches) Falling through the map when a ranked match begins Should we forgive and forget? The Call of Duty 3 Multiplayer Team released its Xbox 360 patch today, addressing Ranked and Player Match issues (full details here). The fix-up seems in part to be preparation for a map pack release expected after the holidays. With its multiplayer better intact, Activision hopes to build on the small fortune its amassed selling COD-related premium content to Xbox Live users.Valor Map Pack (800 points) will include five multiplayer maps; Activision will also offer an additional map, "Champs," for free. Set in Port Royal de Champs, France, the bonus map is ideal for small- to mid-sized matches. No announcement has been made about offering the Valor maps or alternative content to PlayStation 3 COD3 players.

It's interesting that the new 800 MS Point Call of Duty 2 Map Pack isn't generating the same angry response as the GRAW expansion, despite the fact it could have easily been combined with the map pack from a couple weeks ago. Maybe it's because the complainers are too busy placing irrational blame on Major Nelson for the missing Prey demo. As the conspiracy theory goes, the machiavellian Major nixed Prey because he wanted to keep the focus on paid content over the Holiday Weekend. It's just nutty enough to make perfect sense, but you'd think they could work a Halliburton angle in there.
