Dr. Doom, Super Skrull, Chun-Li and Trish joined the cast of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the Comic-Con show floor preview build; though Thor and Amaterasu didn't make the trip (lazy gods!). I checked out the new characters and chatted with producer Ryota Niitsuma about the latest roster updates. Of the four, Super Skrull seems to be attracting the most attention at the show. The famous comic book villain has been the hero at Comic-Con, wowing attendees with his Fantastic Four powers: slamming opponents with Thing fists, flaming on with Human Torch fire, and performing an impressive Mr. Fantastic stretch-throw impression. Niitsuma recalled that Skrull's mix of abilities was a tough concoction to brew -- but certainly a potent one in action. %Gallery-98120%

Joining the mighty Thor in Marvel vs. Capcom 3's character lineup is Amaterasu, sun goddess, white wolf and star of Capcom's Okami. She may be the smallest fighter on the roster, but, as you can see in the video after the break, she's as fierce as she is amazingly rendered.

T.Q. Jefferson, director of Marvel Games, might not have had the element of surprise on his side when revealing the inclusion of the Mighty Thor in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but the confirmation was more than welcome when he made the announcement at the MvC 3 panel at Comic-Con. "Bringing him into this game is huge," Jefferson said. "The fact that we've got the movie coming out and another Thor game coming out from Sega, there's an appetite for Thor out there among the fanbase." For the especially curious among you, Jefferson revealed that the version of the Asgardian god used in this game will be Thor as drawn by Olivier Coipel in the latest comic series. Marvel.com seems to have accidentally revealed two more Marvel vs. Capcom 3 characters ahead of time. Character art and screenshots depicting Thor and Okami's Amaterasu appeared in Marvel.com's gallery for the game, though it seems to have been taken down since. However, because sites like Omega-Level saved the images, and because you can see one in this very post, and because the Thor character art remains in Marvel's gallery at this moment, it doesn't really take much faith to believe in these two gods. We'll probably learn more details during tomorrow's MvC3 Comic-Con panel.

Though the Comic-Con festivities don't technically kick off until tomorrow, Capcom's getting things started early with a batch of new character announcements for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. From the Marvel universe, iron-clad antagonist Doctor Doom will be making a nefarious appearance, along with the multifaceted Super Skrull. From Capcom's titles, the pint-sized powerhouse Chun-Li joins the fray, as does Devil May Cry's femme fatale, Trish. Check out some gameplay footage featuring these new characters in the video posted after the jump, or catch a glimpse of some of their special abilities in the gallery below. Also, doesn't Super Skrull have like, every power ever? That hardly seems fair. %Gallery-97909%

  • Interview: Marvel vs Capcom 3 producer Ryota Niitsuma

During E3, we bent the ear of Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds producer Ryota Niitsuma, who in turn gabbed about the new game and previous Vs titles, as well as the possibility of a new arcade stick partnership with Mad Catz. The full interview follows. Joystiq: We've heard different stories about the origin of Marvel vs Capcom 3 -- both that development started as a result of strong sales of the HD re-release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and that it was in development long before that. Which is it? Ryota Niitsuma: Both games were being developed independently -- one didn't lead to the other, as it were. While we were getting the ball rolling on MvC3, the downloadable version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 was being repackaged and distributed. And then that was really successful, as you know, and because of that, it had kind of an impact on Marvel vs Capcom 3. We thought then that the game would be really big and people would be excited about it, so then we were more hopeful and expectant of what would happen with Marvel vs Capcom 3. %Gallery-91173%

Update: We've closed the comments and will pick two lucky winners shortly. Keep an eye on your inboxes! Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds looks Human Torch hot (character not confirmed) on the E3 showfloor -- but these limited edition shirts worn by Capcom staff were certainly another eye-catcher around the booth. The picture above doesn't do this high-quality shirt justice. We've got two medium-sized shirts to give away -- not to the same person, mind you -- so just follow these rules: Leave a comment telling us who would win in a fight: Marvel or Capcom? You must be 13 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec). Limit 1 entry per person. This entry period ends at 12:00PM ET on Monday, June 21, 2010. At that time, we will randomly select 2 winners to each receive one "Fate of Two Worlds" T-shirt (no ARV; promotional item not for resale). Check your emails! For a list of complete rules, click here. What is Joyswag? Since we don't keep the games and merchandise we receive for review or promotional purposes, it becomes "Joyswag," which is passed along to our readers. Please note that Joyswag may be in "used" condition. For more info on our policy, click here.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has always been the fighting game for people who don't like fighting games -- while other titles in the genre offer up split second reaction requirements and deep combo sets, MvC2 focused on flashy graphics and relatively easy moves. While the depth is there if you want to look for it, the focus is on the fun of teaming big shiny Marvel characters up with their Capcom counterparts and slugging it out for as many hits as possible. We got to see the game at at pre-E3 event a few weeks ago, and along with a nice graphical upgrade and a few control tweaks and character additions, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 continues the tradition well. %Gallery-93783%

  • Deadpool and Dante cross swords in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 trailer

Originally announced in Game Informer, Capcom has taken the wraps off of two new Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds characters: the sarcastic, sword- and pistol-wielding Dante from Devil May Cry, and the sarcastic, sword- and pistol-wielding Deadpool. Later on in the trailer, we see Ryu and Wolverine stop fighting to gawk at some kind of crazy space vortexy thing. We're guessing that even more playable characters will emerge from it -- or that it will, itself, be a playable character. That would certainly shake things up.

The screens are missing HUD elements, but that's fine -- we just wanted to see how the game would "blur the line between 2D and 3D graphics." Frankly, we're surprised it doesn't look more like Super Street Fighter IV. And not a single curleh mustache in sight? How will the fans react? Head into our gallery below to check out the new screens, which feature a Ryu vs Wolverine match-up, Iron Man shooting Morrigan in the face and a trigger-happy Chris Redfield taking on The Hulk. %Gallery-93783%

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 nearing development 'climax'

    by

    05.06.2010

In a recent update on the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 developer blog, assistant producer Akihito Kadowaki wrote, "Development is approaching a climax" (as translated by Andriasang). While Kadowaki didn't elaborate on the exact meaning of that statement, it could suggest that the game's groundwork is almost complete, leaving plenty of time for the team to focus on character balancing before the game's expected release in spring 2011. Other, completely unlikely scenarios include: (1) Development is about to be handed off to British indie studio Climax Group for the finishing touches; or (2) an agreement has been reached with Sega to add Bayonetta to the roster. Kadowaki also hinted that MvC3 would soon appear at an event -- hmm, what's coming up? If the core development phase, which reportedly began almost two years ago, is nearing completion, perhaps we could soon see a gameplay demonstration. Dare we even hope for a playable E3 demo?

You might think you're pumped for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but Mega64 has been pumped for a whole decade. Just to prove it, the group has released a handmade trailer it created way back in its high school days. Okay, so the guys didn't really make a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 trailer in high school, but the one they made to look that way is pretty funny anyway. Also, seriously, Carmen Sandiego in a fighting game? How come no one has thought of that before? Check it out after the break.

  • Capcom wants to put Frank West into as many games as possible

It was a tough blow to hear that Frank West wouldn't star in Dead Rising 2. All was not lost, however: Frank not only cut his teeth fighting less undead opponents in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, but there's some evidence he'll be in Marvel vs Capcom 3 -- and let's not forget his cameo in Lost Planet 2. According to Capcom's Seth Killian, Frank West is pretty damn popular in these parts, something of which Capcom of Japan is aware. He told Destructoid that not only is Capcom of Japan "convinced" that your everyday American loves the Dead Rising protagonist, but that he'll "be making appearances in as many games as they can get him into." Personally, we're all for it. Whatever he's in, we just hope it spawns more hilarious internet videos.

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in development since summer 2008

    04.23.2010

For those of you thinking that Capcom's recently revealed Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was born from the strong sales of last year's Marvel vs. Capcom 2 downloadable release, well, Capcom's Ryota Niitsuma has some learnin' for you. "We really started working in development in summer 2008. But all the contract and legal negotiations -- that came way before that, as well. So ... we started to produce this game before the success of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as a downloadable title," Niitsuma told GameTrailers, speaking through a translator during an interview at Captivate 2010 (found after the break). Notably, Niitsuma's timeline contradicts statements made by Capcom last May. At that time, Capcom's Seth Killian told us, "What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about [the MvC2 downloadable release], and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do." Boy, the things a company representative will say to guard an early-in-production title. [Via VG247]

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 coming spring 2011 to PS3, Xbox 360

    by

    04.20.2010

Download in HD from Big Download As Arnold Schwarzenegger would say: "It's not a rumah!" Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is very real, and was unveiled by Capcom last week at its Captivate 2010 event. As you can see in the trailer above, the series is going fully polygonal for round three, with visuals that its publisher says deliver "a 'moving comic' style, blurring the boundaries between 2D and 3D graphics." Save for the fairly mundane cityscape, we'd have to agree that the characters in the video look like an evolution of what Capcom was able to deliver in Street Fighter IV. Also of note: The game is being built using the MT Framework engine, which powers Lost Planet 2. It's coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 in spring 2011. The producer and "total" director of the game (the trailer credits actually list him as such!) is none other than Ryota Niitsuma, producer of the superb versus series fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. In fact, Niitsuma expressed his enthusiasm for the fighting genre to us back in January of this year. Now we know at least one of the reasons why. As for the cast of characters, the trailer (and artwork in the gallery below) give us clear looks at Ryu, Morrigan, Wolverine, Hulk, Iron Man and ... Resident Evil's Chris Redfield. We've taken a long hard look at the silhouettes that appear behind the Capcom and Marvel logos are the start of the footage (and, again, in the background of the official art) and have, we think, identified some of the other characters, including Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Chun-Li, Frank West, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Deadpool and Super-Skrull. We know you can figure out the rest, right? There have to be some good ones, as Capcom's VP of strategic planning and bizdev, Christian Svensson, boldly claims we're in store for "the most epic fighting game ever developed." Update: A Capcom representative has provided Joystiq with a few more hints about the size of the character roster. "We're not necessarily hyping the number of characters with MvC3, we're hyping quality," the rep offered. "These aren't just sprites you can plug into the game. This is a full, disc-based release with gorgeous 3D models powered by the latest version of MT Framework. At this point, there are roughly 30 characters in the game, but that number will increase. You can rest assured that Niitsuma-san and his team will be working hard to include as many characters as possible before the game hits next year." %Gallery-91173%

  • Marvel vs Capcom 3 for Xbox 360 & PS3 announced, along with Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 [update]

    by
    Ben Gilbert

    04.17.2010

Update: Capcom has officially announced both Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2. Additionally, a Capcom representative clarified some details about the MvC3 character roster for Joystiq: "We're not necessarily hyping the number of characters with MvC3, we're hyping quality. These aren't just sprites you can plug into the game. This is a full, disc-based release with gorgeous 3D models powered by the latest version of MT Framework. At this point, there are roughly 30 characters in the game, but that number will increase. You can rest assured that Niitsuma-san and his team will be working hard to include as many characters as possible before the game hits next year." Original Story: There have been rumors swirling around about a sequel to Capcom's superhero-flavored fighter Marvel vs Capcom 2 pretty much since the game arrived 10 years ago. And given Capcom's recent success with a Street Fighter revival -- not to mention the sales rampage of MvC2 on XBLA and PSN -- the sequel rumor mill has once again begun turning furiously. This week's press-only Captivate event in Hawaii, held yearly by the Japanese publisher, is said to have showcased just such a sequel in Marvel vs Capcom 3 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, claims PlanetXbox360. At the same event, a sequel to Bionic Commando: Rearmed is alleged to have been announced, though no details were provided in the post. According to the report, MvC3 will receive a retail release "later this year or early 2011" and will run in "full 1080p." Allegedly, while the full character list is unknown, some have been confirmed. "Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm, and a few others will be back; but the team behind MvC3 have said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes," alleges PlanetXbox360. The rumored sequel is said to be a nontraditional 2D fighter, which suggests that it could feature 3D elements, as seen in Street Fighter IV. PlanetXbox360 claims we'll hear more about the title next week and that the game will be playable at E3 this June. When reached for comment, Capcom told Joystiq, "We don't comment on speculation and rumors." [Thanks Nathan Garcia!] Editors' note: Joystiq did not attend Captivate this year. We determined the perceived environment, and associated downtime, of the event was not in accordance with our editorial policy. We expect to provide firsthand preview coverage of all Capcom titles shown at Captivate during E3 this June. For more information on our policies, click here.

  • Capcom: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 'not part of deal' to re-release MvC2

    05.05.2009

If you're thinking the pending digital release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is any indication that the path is clear for "Marvel vs. Capcom 3," think again. "The short answer is no, that's not any part of this deal," Capcom's Seth Killian lamented to Joystiq at a media event yesterday. "What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do." For now, licensing issues are preventing further developments. The same is true for a North American release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. "It's a lot of 'dance with the lawyers' on that one," explained Killian. "The rights holders for Tatsunoko in Japan are one company, but in the U.S. it's ... 13 companies -- and some are very attentive and some are not." So if you've been holding your breath for this one, you might want to consider coming up for air.Killian also told Joystiq that Capcom is considering releasing Marvel vs. Capcom 2-branded arcade sticks (à la the popular SFIV controllers). "It's a discussion ... we would love to make it happen. If you saw the 'leak' of those MadCatz sticks, that was actually B.S. That was a complete fabrication, but it's something we would love to do."%Gallery-51288%
