  • Hsien-Ko and Sentinel confirmed for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, first videos

You might have heard that the Sentinel -- mango or otherwise -- would not be making a return appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. You may also have heard that no more members of the Darkstalkers cast would be joining the roster. You might be inclined to believe these statements because they came from the mouth of Capcom's Ryota Niitsuma himself. Either Niitsuma was misinformed or someone was fibbing. Regardless, here are some videos of Hsien-Ko and Sentinel in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Hsien-Ko, incidentally, was among the characters mentioned on a purportedly leaked list we posted last year. Sentinel was not, though the this isn't the first time we've seen an unlisted character pop up. [Thanks, Catalyst]

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 nixed Frank West late in development

Remember all those fancy combos you learned with Frank West last year in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom? Well, you can forget about redirecting them to Chris Redfield's face when Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ships this February. Plans for Dead Rising 1's main man being playable in MvC3 were in place -- his silhouette appears in the game's debut trailer , and he showed up in our leaked list of characters earlier this year -- but he was cut due to "some extra work involved, just from the nature of his moves." West was reportedly "quite deep" into the process before getting axed. Capcom producer Ryota Niitsuma explained the loss to VideoGamer.com, saying, "We felt we could direct our resources to better use, so we've taken Frank out." We're hoping that "better use" of resources is directed at the development of a Chuck Greene character to round out a Dead Rising character DLC pack. They've murdered thousands of zombies, you know. • Marvel vs. Capcom 3's alternate costumes' comic book origins explored

Apparently, a little bit more thought went into the alternate costumes of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 than just "hey, this outfit would probably look cool in red and black." IGN recently explored the canonical comic book origins of a handful of Marvel fighters' extra duds, including Storm's crimson X-Treme X-Men get-up, Dormammu's Strange Tales green-and-yellow armor, and Captain America's Red Guardian costume, which, as you probably sussed out, is pretty red. It looks like Capcom (with a lot of help from Marvel, of course) is taking these character skins pretty seriously. We're happy to see that so much consideration went into these outfits -- but we can't wait to see how they explain all the different additional costumes for Capcom's fighters. "Oh, you don't remember that time that Haggar wore a bright purple chest-belt? That was a real thing that happened, we promise."

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 joined by Akuma and Taskmaster

    01.17.2011

Video reveals of Street Fighter's Akuma and Marvel Comics' Taskmaster as playable characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 have popped up exclusively on IGN. Fans of the series will no doubt have spotted Akuma in a British retailer listing for February's big fighting game, and Taskmaster made an appearance in panels from what was rumored to be a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tie-in comic book. Rather than being unlocked out of the gate, players must earn 2000 PP for Akuma and 8000 PP for Taskmaster -- Eurogamer describes earning 2000 PP as "roughly equivalent to a single playthrough of Arcade Mode," adding that Capcom believes "most players" will unlock all secret characters "within a couple of hours." It is believed that two more characters will be revealed before MvC3 arrives on February 15 -- for now, you can see videos of Taskmaster and Akuma just after the break.

Are you looking for a fashion statement which will inform passersby that you could air juggle their pathetic frame for entire days with little to no effort? Good news: The Capcom Store is offering just such a shirt with pre-orders for Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Special Edition.

The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 listing on British retailer ShopTo's site give the indication that Akuma will be featured among the Capcom roster in the game. As far as early accidental reveals go, this one's pretty clear, with very official character art (and even a helpful "Akuma" label). We know: huge surprise that Akuma would appear in a Capcom fighting game. As we always do when a new MvC3 character is discovered, we checked the rumored "leaked" roster we posted in November. Akuma's not there! Given the authentic look of that character art, consider this a mark against the veracity of that list -- or at least evidence that said list is not final. [Thanks, revengez]

Capcom has revealed the pre-order bonuses for Marvel vs Capcom 3 in Europe. ShopTo and GameStation pre-orderers will snag a comic or a SteelBook edition of the game, respectively, both of which are already part of the North American collector's edition. Most retailers, however, will be offering some sweet T-shirts. There are seven different shirts, each unique to a different retailer. We're a bit partial to Blockbuster's tee, pictured above. • Report: Marvel vs Capcom 3 cheekily punishes rage quitters

    by
    Richard Mitchell

    01.12.2011

According to GamesRadar, Marvel vs Capcom 3 has a relatively unique solution to the problem of habitual online quitters. That is to say: People who quit online matches before they are over. That is to say: Rage quitters. Marvel vs Capcom 3 reportedly tracks players' quitting habits and can detect those who quit frequently. Said players will then be placed in a new matchmaking bracket -- one populated solely by other rage quitters. In other words, quit all the time and you'll be paired with other players that quit all the time. Shoryuken notes that a similar system was implemented in Tatsunoko vs Capcom. We've contacted Capcom to confirm if such a system is indeed in place for MvC3. Assuming it's true, it's certainly a novel concept, though perhaps a terrifying one for those with unstable internet connections.

  • Leaked Marvel vs. Capcom 3 trailers show Haggar and (X-Men's) Phoenix

A new trailer posted by VicioJuegos reveals that wrestler/mayor/shirt refuser Mike Haggar is joining the inter-universe battle in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 -- the last of the three Final Fight protagonists to appear in a major Capcom fighter. His moves include a lot of stuff that should be familiar to Final Fighters, including a big swing of a pipe and a super combo made entirely of a single, repeated punch. Haggar appeared on the leaked roster we had, offering some support for the authenticity of that list. Another trailer reveals the inclusion of Phoenix -- not the lawyer, before you get too excited -- the unstable version of telekinetic X-men character, Jean Grey. She wasn't on our leaked roster. See both trailers after the break.

  • Marvel vs Capcom 3 preview: Crossover chaos

The differences between Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are startling to me. Sinking some time into a near-final preview build, I've found that the new iteration of Capcom's beloved series feels very different from the decade-old classic in key aspects of design. Should the developers fail to address certain concerns I believe others would share, I fear Marvel vs Capcom 3 may require a period of adjustment for people expecting more of the same. First and foremost, I've noticed that MvC3 is a lot slower than the previous game. The fights seem to creep along at a more mundane pace this time around. It just doesn't feel like Marvel vs Capcom. %Gallery-112710%

  • Evo fighting game tournament announces 2011 season

    01.06.2011

The Evo fighting game championship will be a little different this year. You'll still lose at Super Street Fighter IV a bunch of times if you compete -- so it won't be that different. But the organizers have partnered with fighting game tournaments in the US and elsewhere to create a series of Evo ranking events. There are also online tournaments (the Xbox Live one has passed) for people who can't reach the event locations, including a PSN tournament on Saturday, January 22. All of these small-time tourneys will lead up to the main event, the Evolution World Finals, at the Rio Casino in Vegas, from July 29 through July 31.

  • Rumor: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 comic art reveals Galactus and Taskmaster [update]

    by

    12.27.2010

Neither Capcom nor Marvel has yet to announce an official comic tie-in for forthcoming fighting game collaboration Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but a posting on ComicArtFans.com indicates that just such a product is on the way. The images seemingly reveal both Galactus and Taskmaster (aka "that guy who looks like Skeletor") as appearing in the game -- we already had Taskmaster on our leaked list last month, and it's possible that Galactus (the planet eater) is a boss character. The image gallery has since been removed, but Shoryuken has all the pertinent images hosted on its website. Also, we know we're supposed to suspend disbelief with the whole superhero thing, but the idea of Chris Redfield challenging the Hulk with a shotgun seems even more comical than his tree-trunk biceps. Update: The post above has been altered to reflect the anonymity of the images origins. Though it has been reported that comic artist Kevin Sharpe created the images, it is not clear that he did any of the work referred to above. [Image credit: Unknown]

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Achievements tease progression system, Mission mode

    12.23.2010

Given the slow, slow drip its developers have had us on since the game was first announced, the recent release of the Achievement list for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 represents one of the biggest info bombs we've been hit with so far. While the list doesn't do much to confirm any rumored characters (though the "Fate of the Satsui no Hadou" certainly seems to hint at the inclusion of Ryu's near-clones, Ken and Akuma), it does reveal some features which have made it into the final cut of the game. For instance, the "Combat Specialist" Achievement mentions a player level progression system, while "A New Avenger" and "Passed the Field Test" reference a Mission mode, which will presumably assist in the aforementioned progression system. Check out the full list of Cheevos after the break for more even speculation fodder.

  • Marvel talks superhero fashion for Marvel vs. Capcom 3's alternate looks

    by

    12.22.2010

Here's evidence of some impressive attention to detail over at Capcom: a Marvel employee, Chris Baker, helped Capcom come up with alternate color schemes for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 that were appropriate to the comics, (mostly) avoiding the "mango Sentinel" variations in favor of costumes that make some kind of canonical sense. With Baker's help, Capcom added some alternate costumes ranging from the familiar (Spider-Man's black symbiote costume, Iron Man's all-silver '60s "Tin Can" look) to the obscure (the "Iron Spider-Man" look, above, from the Civil War series, or Wolverine's suit from Age of Apocalypse). The costumes aren't perfect, since the shape of the 3D models can't be altered -- they can only be reskinned. We said Marvel "mostly" avoided the random Marvel vs. Capcom 2 variants. There's one really important exception: a blue Magneto costume was added specifically as a reference to the famous "Mahvel Baybee" video. Old school! [Thanks, Jack!]

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 cinematic trailer shows a lot of vial-ence

We're not exactly sure what's stored inside of the vial seen in the latest cinematic trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but it's got to be pretty awesome if Arthur, Wesker, X-23, MODOK and a whole mess of other brawlers are fighting over it. Man, now we kind of want it. We wonder if they'll share!

  • See C. Viper and Storm in Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Do you know what happens to a Viper when it's struck by lightning? You'll find out in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. GameSpot got the exclusive on two new characters Capcom is letting loose on the crossover fighter: X-Men's Storm and Crimson Viper from Street Fighter IV. Check out video introductions for both characters after the break, along with some fight footage. This is exciting in itself, but it also provides further evidence that the unverified roster we received is on the right track, since both of these new characters are on it. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • You will not be taken for a ride by a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 demo

    11.23.2010

We're pretty sure if we were given only a handful of characters and stages from Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds in a free trial, we could stretch out our enjoyment of it for an awfully long time. We won't get the opportunity, however: In a recent post on the Capcom Unity forums, VP of Strategic Planning Christian Svensson confirmed to anticipatory fans that, "As with Street Fighter IV, there will be no demo of MvC3." Svensson also responded to a few fans theories about yet-to-be-revealed fighters, and also defended Capcom's decision to sell downloadable characters, stating "DLC is part of the business model these days given the massive costs of production and can be the difference between a profitable product and an unprofitable product." Oh, wait -- that's gotta be another hint, right? An unprofitable product? That's like, pretty much confirmation of the inclusion of Dark Void protagonist William Grey.

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 launches on February 15, 2011

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will determine the fate of two worlds when it launches in North America on February 15, 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. (It'll come out in Europe on February 18.) Capcom has confirmed the launch date alongside the Special Edition, which Gamestop outed early this morning. The Special Edition contains a steelbook case, a prologue comic, a one-month subscription to Marvel's online comic service and a download voucher, and signals the game's first DLC characters. Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath will become available for purchase and download four weeks after the debut of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but you'll get them for free if you grab the $69.99 Special Edition. Galleries of the MvC3 special edition, along with She-Hulk and Zero (announced yesterday), can be found after the break. %Gallery-107543%

The full list of starting participants in next year's cross-dimensional fight club, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, has yet to be officially confirmed, but we've already learned of two late, downloadable entries: Resident Evil's almost-sandwich, Jill Valentine; and the optometrist's grotesque nightmare, Shuma Gorath. According to a Gamestop listing, both combatants will be available four weeks after the game's launch -- an included download voucher grants free access to Jill and Shuma if you purchase the Special Edition. The Special Edition also includes a steelbook case (embellished with "exclusive artwork"), a one-month subscription to Marvel's online digital comics service, and a prologue comic that will spend 12 pages attempting to explain the head-butting contest between two fictional universes. A pre-order will net you a set of colorful console decal cards that show character descriptions and move-lists. Both Gamestop and Amazon predict that Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds will launch on February 15, 2011. [Thanks, Jack B.]
