  • Mega64 takes a (Rainbow Six) Vegas (2) Vacation

It may seem like just a silly promotional video for Rainbow Six Vegas 2, but we like to think of the above video as an educational film. Primarily, of course, it teaches/reminds the guys from Mega64 are really ballsy. Seriously, they're bold in a way that would make Errol Flynn want to curl up with a mug of Earl Grey and an issue of Teen Vogue. But we also learn the lengths that everyday citizens are willing to go to in the fight against terror. Terrorists can literally be dancing in front of them in Hawaiian shirts and they will still pretend to see nothing. Consider us inspired.

  • Mega64 goes Jonze for Harmonix game regulars: Freezepop

If you've ever played a rhythm game by those musical connoisseurs at Harmonix, you're probably familiar with the idiosyncratic synth-pop stylings of Boston's own Freezepop. From 2001's Frequency ("Science Genius Girl") to last year's iPod smash-hit Phase ("Pop Music is Not a Crime"), their dessert-inspired name has become synonymous with the music/rhythm genre. We can only imagine that the boys at Mega64 leapt at the opportunity to direct the latest music video for the inimitable Bostonian trio: "Brainpower", one of the unlockable songs featured on Rock Band. As far as we know, this is Mega's first music video (apart from their bastardization of a well-traveled internet classic). What do you think of this epic gaming culture collision? Do Rocco, Derrick and Shawn have the chops to "get their Jonze on"?

Just because you may not have heard of most indie game developers doesn't mean they don't have the same rights as more mainstream devs. One of those inalienable rights? Getting made fun of by the Mega64 guys, which they got a hot, steamy helping of during the IGF Awards during GDC.Our personal favorite? Watching a grown man appear to hump a keyboard. We're sure there was more context to it than that, but damned if we can tell you what it is. Hey, you go for all of GDC week without sleep, see how sharp you are. We've got two more after the jump, check them totally out.

When your Rock Band accessories break down, it's such a pain. Nobody wants to hop online and fill out a simple form and then wait at least three days for a new guitar to be sent to their home. Luckily, thanks to the guys of Mega64, you don't have to. It's all because of their miracle product: Rock Jam.Now sure, we know there are naysayers. People who complain that the effects aren't permanent, or the smell so pungent it requires a cover up ... or the taste. ... You know what? Maybe three days isn't so long to wait after all.

  • Mega64's VGA 2007 TV spot makes us laugh, feel guilty

Mega64's latest ad for Spike TV's "Video Game Awards 2007" further proves the fact that there's nothing funnier than old people talking about electronics. We admit it, when we see a befuddled septuagenarian being buffeted by questions about video games, we can't help but snicker. We know it makes us bad people. There's no doubt in our minds that in fifty years, a trio of cheap-suited young men will hassle us about things we don't understand, just to get a few guffaws. It's just the great circle of internet comedy.

Although the real life Smash Brothers video had its moments, it didn't impress us too much. Mega64's enactment of Super Mario Bros. 3's kuribo shoe, however, tickled us in the right places. The kuribo shoe was probably one of the most exciting parts of the game (which says a lot, since the whole thing was awesome). In real life though, it just looks exhausting. And hilarious. Or maybe we're just fickle like that.

  • Mega64's not happy about Halo 3

You know, it's easy to get excited about Halo 3. Whether you're getting shot by your friends, you're shooting your friends or you're shooting/being shot by the computer that is your only friend, there's no argument that Sept. 25 is a good day. But have you even taken a moment to consider the others? Have you thought, for example, how this will affect the creators of Cabela's Trophy Bucks, also released today? No, of course you haven't.To be fair, we hadn't either, until Mega64 recreated the sad night that the designers of the deer hunting sim shared on Monday. We were so moved that we swore of Halo 3 entirely. ... Well, not quite. But every time we push a button we die just a little.

  • PAX 07: The Mega64 panel

Mega64, purveyors of awkwardly hilarious videos that blend real life and tiny chunks of our favorite games, warned us all at the outset (after a montage of Internet video clips in the vein of Bubb Rubb, followed by a rousing dancing-through-the-crowd-to-2-Unlimited intro) that their panels were disappointing. And then, as if trying to prove the point, they proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes or so battling technical difficulties with video, only to replay the same introductory video when they regained the capability. Also, there were no lights (prompting Mega64's Rocco to remark that this would be a "sexy panel"). They were still wrong. It was not disappointing at all-- we felt perfectly appointed.During the unexpected void left by video problems, and again at the end of the panel, the guys took questions from the audience, ranging from the hilariously Mega64-nerdy ("How often does the 'we're shooting this for school' excuse work?" Answer: "100% of the time") to the general (Ages of Mega64 performers: 23, 23, 21, 25-- all younger than me, and I have yet to create a hit video on the Internet, much less hold a gathering to discuss them). When video-playing returned, we were treated to a selection of Mega64 videos, including a new-- and briliiant-- Kuribo's Shoe trip around town, along with favorites like Sexy64 and "I'm Captain Basch from Dalmasca!" We then saw a bizarre video taken years ago in a Barnes & Noble: about five seconds of some guy glaring at the group as they walk through the store in full Wizarding attire. But while that may have been (one of) the Greatest Videos Ever Made, their rejected Jam Sessions ad was the highlight of the show: it featured a homeless character who, after a failed attempt to earn money with a whistle, begins playing a lovely guitar melody in Jam Sessions (which obviously wasn't created with Jam Sessions), attracting two admirers who not only throw their cash and credit cards into his cup, but become so enraptured with the music that they begin undressing and writhing on the ground. The ESRB rejected the video because it featured a homeless character. After the break, I've posted a picture of the "tattoo" Rocco gave me at the Mega64 booth.

  • Mega64 gives Final Fantasy XII a Basch

As if walking around in the guise of androgyny poster person Vaan wasn't humiliating enough, one of the chaps from Mega64 also mimics an early Final Fantasy XII sequence in this latest video. In an attempt to earn some notoriety (just like in the game), the cosplayer proudly declares himself to be "Captain Basch from Dalmasca," consequently facing perplexed stares and the fist of a very angry father. We especially like the man who mistakes Vaan for a Star Wars character. Sir, if you only knew the profound insight your gambit displayed regarding this Final Fantasy in particular.Fans of public videogame theatrics should note that the Mega64 Time! DVD set is now available to purchase, view and vicariously feel embarrassed about.

It seems like those kids from Mega64 are all grown up. Just a few scant years ago they were pretending to be Mario and Luigi and harassing innocent people on the street. Now ... well, they're still doing that, but now they do it with Shigeru Miyamoto looking on and they get to show the results in an actual, fancy theater. Oh, and they look sexy doing it.Their first-ever theatrical showing is set for Friday July 27 (during the San Diego Comic Con) at the La Jolla Village Theater. They'll be showing off some random bits, but the main feature is premiere of the first two episodes of Version 3, the third season of their show. More info (including how to purchase the $10 tickets) is available here. Also announced: Mega64 Time!, a two-disc collection of random bits and every video game ad the guys have ever made, which will be available the same weekend as the premiere. You see that? It's their first synergistic marketing! God, they grow up so fast.

  • Sexy64 is first all-male gaming league

It feels like the world has been crying out for this for ages, and now, the Mega64 pioneers have tapped into one of the most underappreciated markets in the industry: Gamers who are also guys. "Guy gamers" as some of the game media have started referring to them. Now, these Mario-loving men finally have an outlet of their own, an all-male gaming league where they can explore their desires free from prying lady eyes: Sexy64.No, before you ask, we're still not really comfortable with the way the guys in this introduction video are being objectified. We still wait in breathless anticipation for the day when men can transform, butterfly-like, from sinewy muscle factories who play the occasional video game between car waxing and shirtless lawn mowing into simply gamers. But still, we applaud this first step towards equality. As they say, you have to crawl on the sand, muscles rippling below tanned skin before you can walk.

We love us some MEGA64. That really goes without saying (which kind of nullifies the first sentence ... never mind). The latest video from the group is actually an advertisement for GRAW 2 but, as usual, it's pretty damned funny. Given the reaction from the Mexican government concerning GRAW 2, the video is also surprisingly relevant (in addition to the obvious hilarity). We won't spoil the video, so let's just say that it's worth watching. Click play, give it a watch, and tell us what you think. [Via Joystiq]

Even if you're not crazy about living Tetris blocks or Mario and Luigi meeting their maker, we think your chuckle bone could be tickled by the latest video from the gentlemen of Mega64 called "Local Leaders." Yes, it's technically an ad for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, but it's also technically really entertaining. A bit of forewarning: The video does feature some explicit language. However, it has been replaced by high-pitched beeps, so it should be work-safe. Unless, of course, your boss is a bat and doesn't appreciate his employees toying with his echolocation, then you might want to wait until you get home. Also, find a new job.

A skit that went great until some guy... Mega64 contributed a few new skits to the Game Developers Choice Awards last week to much applause and laughter, including a pretty poignant piece on Feel the Magic XX / XY (we're still waiting for that one to pop up on the internet). One in particular made the crowd scream more than anything else that night. The YouTube description reads thusly: "A skit that went great until some guy made it all awkward." We won't spoil the rest, so check out the video after the break.

Those lovable scamps from Mega64 are at it again! There's never a dull moment when these friends go on a wild, madcap adventure that you'll never forget. Join them, as they discover... the true meaning of friendship.... what? Oh, we were thinking about a different movie. This one's just, you know, some dudes jumping around in Mario Bros. suits and stuff. But it's the patented brand of Mega64 funny-- video game characters accosting random (and not so random) people on the street-- that makes their work worth our few seconds of download time. Please, click on the limited-edition post break, and watch the movie that your whole family is sure to love!

Once again landing in the gap between video games and reality, the Mega 64 boys find themselves covering a zombie outbreak in a mall. Follow the real Frank West as he takes "FANTASTIC!" photos, protects those with poor pathfinding abilities and deals with annoying security guards. He's covered wars, you know. [Thanks Jay & Braith. The boys at Mega64 are at it again, this time with a real life version of Dead Rising. For those of you unfamiliar with Mega64, we have only one question: how's the view? You know, like, how's the view from underneath the rock that you live under. We keed, we keed. Seriously, Mega64 goes around harassing people performing skits based off their favorite video games. Some of their works include skits based off Resident Evil 4 (one of our favorites), Paperboy, and Katamari Damacy. Check out the above video, and when you're done with that, hit their website for more hilarity. Because watching funny videos is always better than working, right? [Thanks, Braith]

Anyone who's played Katamari Damacy has the same thought, at one point or another, "What must it look like to all these people to see a short green guy rolling their friends--and cats--up onto a sticky ball?"The pranksters at Mega64 apparently count themselves amongst that group, and they've decided to find out what would happen. The cats? They don't like it so much. Neither do baseball players; however, basketball players understand the katamari! Who died and made that baseball field jerk the King of all Cosmos?[Thanks, Jason]Read on for an embedded video, or check out their site for links to this and plenty of other videos!
