A tale of two box arts. Which will you choose? Pay attention: these two similar, but different, box arts for Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus have a crucial difference awaiting on the inside. One is the "Deluxe Edition" -- can you guess which one?The red cover on the right is for the premium edition, which not only includes a cool box, but also includes both MGS: Portable Ops Plus and the original Portable Ops. You will need the original in order to play the expansion pack, so those that missed the original will certainly want to pick up the combined bundle. The Japanese price for both? A mere $45.No American release has been confirmed, but Amazon has already listed the game for a November release. Hopefully, the US will also receive its own ultra-value "Deluxe Edition."

Interested in seeing a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4? So were many in attendance at Konami's press conference during the Leipzig Games Convention. Unfortunately, as 1UP reports, technical glitches concerning the audio led to the publisher shutting down the trailer. "We apparently missed the important half -- everything we saw so far was just repeated from prior trailers," said 1UP.As previously noted, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is holding a separate press conference tomorrow. With any luck, Solid Snake will be in better shape tomorrow. We hear at his age, he has good days and bad days.

The Konami press conference at Leipzig was supposed to feature a brand-new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4. The crowd, jittery in anticipation, shivered as they saw the opening moments of Kojima's latest ... and were shocked to hear the audio start fading away -- and the video, gone. Konami pulled the plug due to "technical difficulties." Now, the trailer is being rescheduled for tomorrow, to satiate the bloodthirsty crowd. At the very least, Europe knows that Kojima is aiming for a simultaneous release for its upcoming PS3-exclusive. "In the past, I felt bad that the European versions of Metal Gear were always last. I can confidently say that we aim to have a simultaneous worldwide release with Metal Gear Solid 4."

Shaky cam video footage of a TV program revealed a few new details on the upcoming PSN title, Metal Gear Solid Online. In it, a Konami producer explains the hacking mechanism that'll be crucial to the online collaborative experience. "You're encouraged to link up with your teammates. If you link up, you can share information. You can see what your teammates say, you can see how they're doing, their battle condition ... One of the guys that was playing, he captured an enemy, and then hacked into his nanomachines that's connected to his team and he was able to get all the information of his opponent's team that was all linked up." Certainly sounds intriguing! We can't wait until the beta releases later this year, and we hope someone in Kojima heaven will grace us with a chance to play it.

According to Play, Hideo Kojima has some surprises lined up for us at this month's Leipzig Gaming Convention. Not only will there be a playable Metal Gear Solid 4 on-hand, Konami has mentioned that they will be also be announcing new Metal Gear Solid projects from Kojima Studio. It's interesting to see that the franchise is staying with Kojima Studio, considering Hideo Kojima has said he will no longer have a hand in Metal Gear Solid after MGS4. But it's cool to hear that he'll still at least have an eye on the series. Also, Kojima said he will be bringing a 'mystery guest' with him to the show. No hints were given at who this person would be, but the mind runs rampant with possibilities. Suda 51? David Hayter? Who knows! It would be awesome to see him pull a Jack Tretton and come out with a 7 foot tall Wookie. Snake vs Chewbacca -- exclusive on the PS3. (Hey, we can dream right?)

Speaking to GameTrailers at the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary shindig a few weeks back, assistant producer at Kojima Productions, Ryan Payton, answers some of of the pressing questions in this post-demonstration world that we live in. Questions like, "How does octocam work on Snake's head?"Even if you've analyzed the E3 trailer frame-by-frame, this interview does warrant a look, if not to see Ryan answer the age old question of, "Is this truly the end of the Metal Gear series?" Well, of course it isn't but that hasn't stopped Kojima from saying so ... again. Ryan offers up a much more likely outcome, saying, "It's far from over but as far as Solid Snake's story? Yeah, we're going to wrap it up with Metal Gear Solid 4."

Konami held a 20th anniversary party for Metal Gear Solid franchise this week and Sony Ericsson brought the hardware to help usher in the third decade. KDDI's W53s will ship with the new game "Metal Gear Solid mobile," an all new version specifically for mobiles -- and we'll admit, it looks pretty sweet. To add some kitsch to the whole affair, style-up covers will be available to theme-up your handset if you happen to be a big fan of the series. So, if you're reading this from anywhere not served by KDDI, sit back and enjoy the pic, cause you'll never be seeing this handset.[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

Flowers are a great way of saying "I love you." Or is it, "I want you to stay exclusive to my console platform." The Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary event was littered with gifts from Sony. There were these beautiful flowers from Kaz Hirai (pictured, left). In addition, Sony baked a cake for the event (pictured, right). As Kotaku points out, there's a lot of Sony love with Metal Gear Solid. Let's not forget that Metal Gear movie that's supposedly being handled by Sony. Or the new Metal Gear phone, also designed by Sony. With all of these slight nudges in Sony's favor, why was there any doubt that the game would launch as a PS3 exclusive?[Thanks, Jay86!]

We know we don't have to say much about this awesome demo of Metal Gear Solid 4's gameplay, so we won't. But we did have to express a couple of thoughts. First, that part with the statue looks really awesome. We're still not crazy about all the menus you have to go through to camo yourself, but still awesome. In fact, the whole thing looks like a heck of a lot of fun. Now, with that out of the way, we can tell you that this is also really weird. Like, Snake laying on a guy and choking him to sleep before he climbs into a barrel and spins so much he pukes, for example. There's other stuff too, but we don't want to ruin it for you. Just don't say we didn't warn you.[Update: We've swapped out the video with something a bit more reliable. For fanatics, be sure to check out GameTrailer's HD version as well!]

At the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary party in Japan today, Kojima made an announcement regarding the upcoming "companion" to Metal Gear Solid 4: Metal Gear Online. This 16-player online stealth battlefield simulator will feature characters, stages and the same control scheme as Metal Gear Solid 4. While a release date is currently nowhere to be seen, there will be a 3000 person beta test later this year. Those who want to sign up have between now and August 6th to do so, though sadly it seems to be for Japanese residents only. Nine screenshots of the game have also been placed on the official Kojima Productions website. Simply click through to the 20th Anniversary party section of the site to see them.

From the Tokyo-based Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary event that spawned a new PSP graphic novel and a cell phone outing for Snake, comes word that 3,000 players will be selected to participate in a beta program for Metal Gear Online. The game, which allows up to 16 players to engage in sneaky neck-snapping shenanigans, will be tested from August 20th until September 3rd.Players hoping to be included in the beta can apply at the Kojima Productions website as of today -- entries close on August 6th. If you find yourself quite geographically removed from the East, you'd best hope Konami announces a similar program for the rest of the world or, at the very least, a release window for Metal Gear Online.

Did you enjoy the first MGS graphic novel? Then you're in for a treat. Kojima announced at the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary party today that there's another one currently in development. This one will be based on Metal Gear Solid 2. The comic, tentatively titled "MGS2: Bande Dessinée", will feature full voice acting. So it'll be just like playing watching any other Metal Gear Solid title, then. Oh, behave. We loved the first graphic novel, so we're very much looking forward to this second one. What about you?

At the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary party in Tokyo today, Hideo Kojima revealed a new Metal Gear branded mobile phone. The phone will be released with a 3D Metal Gear cell phone game pre-installed on it, though there has been no word on price or a release date. No doubt the game will be downloadable for all cell phones that support it as well. The 1Up liveblogger has said that game "looks between MG1 and 2 in quality." We are assuming he's referring to Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, as Metal Gear 1 and 2 were 2D.Until Japan decides to let us into the Cool Mobile Phone Content club, we probably won't be seeing this game released in either America or Europe. Let's get that petition for a PSP version started, shall we?

Though you might not consider a cell phone game to be a "real" addition to the franchise (on account of it being phoney, you see), you can take solace in the fact that a mobile Metal Gear Solid will bring a whole new level of realism to those infamous codec calls. "Hello, is this the colonel? An earth-shattering megaton, you say? Metal Gear?! Konami announced a 3D MGS cell phone game at their 20th Anniversary event in Tokyo? What do you mean that's it? Stop lying to me, colonel!"1UP says a release date and price have yet to be announced. The game is expected to come pre-loaded on a special Metal Gear-branded phone from Sony and may require you to speed dial the girlfriend whenever you want to save your progress.

At a special Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary event in Tokyo today, Konami unveiled a new graphic novel adaptation of the stealth franchise's most controversial entry -- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. 1UP reports that the title is styled similarly to the 2006 PSP novel (based on IDW's Metal Gear Solid comic series), with the exception that speech bubbles will now be accompanied by full voice acting. The release date for MGS2: Bande Dessinée (isn't that French for "comic strip?") is currently unknown.

This half-hour long video isn't chock full of news or hot gameplay footage. But for those of who love Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil, it's 26 minutes more than well spent. It's Hideo Kojima (MGS) and Shinji Mikami (RE) having an informal chat that's basically moderated by Suda 51, creator of Killer 7. The event, held this summer, was called "Snake vs. Zombie." (P.S. We need one of those T-shirts, STAT.)Come on, it's Saturday. You don't have anything to do. You owe it to yourself to spend a half-hour with these guys. If you need more convincing, know that you'll get to hear Kojima's brilliant plan to turn Resident Evil into a boring, yet profitable MMORPG and Mikami's revelation that he was drunk when he decided to be in charge of the Resident Evil remake. Honestly, it's hysterical. Go. Watch.

  • OXM rumor: MGS4 on 360 a few months after PS3

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/xbox_360/MGS4_on_360_a_few_months_after_PS3_Says_OXM_Magazine'; Alright, so Konami's secret, poetic announcement turned out not to be Metal Gear Solid 4 for the Xbox 360. It turned out to be Silent Hill 5 (which is actually bigger news for some people). Still, a good rumor never dies (and a great rumor comes true). While the MGS4 360 rumor has yet to come true, a reliable tipster tells us that Official Xbox Magazine has taken it upon themselves to toss another log on the fire. In the most recent Rumor Mole section, OXM declares that a "bankable source" told them that Metal Gear Solid 4 is definitely coming to Xbox 360. The game is reportedly being ported by a separate team -- which isn't headed by Hideo Kojima -- and should ship "a few months" after the PS3 version.Considering the ever-mounting rumors and Konami's own comments on the matter, it's starting to look like the only thing missing is an official announcement.[Thanks, Steve Gannon]

The PlayStation Premiere event in Tokyo is in full swing and news is coming thick and fast. The latest news is that Konami has announced an expansion for the PSP title Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. Focused on online play, the game will feature new levels and characters, as well as a new single player "Infinity mode". Not much more information regarding the gameplay has been released, however the price of the expansion will be 2,400 yen on its own, or 4,300 yen in a double pack with the original game. The expansion will be released in Japan on the 20th of September, with no word yet on an American/European release. We're intrigued and cannot wait to have a look at how this expansion works out. Hopefully it'll satisfy our Metal Gear Solid appetites until MGS4 comes out in early '08. If the expansion reaches the English speaking world before then, that is.Check out IGN for some more screenshots.
