Just when it looked like there wasn't going to be any interesting updates today over at the Sony's PlayStation.Blog, Patrick Seybold, the senior manager of PR, announced that the new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer will be available to download from the PlayStation Store immediately following the Sony conference tomorrow. According to Patrick, Konami and Kojima Productions just finished the last touches on the trailer early today and even offers support for 5.1 surround sound, something sure to please the hardcore MGS-philes. This E3 keeps getting more and more exciting. It's awesome that Sony has followed Microsoft's lead and is increasing the ability for the consumer to experience all the amazing stuff going on at E3 through their online stores. Unlike the last 'new' trailer, this one is suppose to actually be all new content. Hopefully we'll finally get some shots of real gameplay (unlikely) or at very least a new environment with less pooping, mooing deathbots. Oh Hideo, why must you tease us so?

  • Konami hints at MGS 4 jumping ship

Talking to Reuters, head of Konami's North American and European operations Kazumi Kitaue expressed their less than optimistic feelings about the PS3 and its latest price cut. "I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100" Kitaue said, "I don't expect a substantial impact ... With $500, you can buy a personal computer". Very opinionated and strong words coming from a developer who is supposedly creating a highly anticipated game (see Metal Gear Solid 4) exclusively for Sony. So, it's even more interesting and revealing to hear Kitaue's response to a question asking about MGS 4 exclusivity where he goes on to say that "Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps".There you go fanboys, we've added some fuel to the Metal Gear Solid 4 is 360 bound fire as it has yet to be drowned out. You're welcome.[Thanks, blackrome]

  • Haze box art steps out of the ... haze

The final box art for the European release of Haze has just been revealed by Free Radical. Sporting the now iconic image of Shane Carpenter with a smashed helmet, it's nothing overly special but still manages to pull off a certain amount of cool creepiness. Something about the guy's insane stare from behind the shattered front of his helmet is a little unsettling.Interestingly, it appears that the main character getting his face smashed in is a key part of the storyline in Haze. If you download the European PSN Haze video that was released last week, you'll see how it actually happens and the importance of the event in the storyline. This combined with hints dropped in various interviews by Free Radical suggests that the beatdown delivered to your character will massively change his view on the world and the direction of the game. It's great to see the developers putting a lot of attention and care into the storyline, their previous efforts, the Timesplitters series, were fantastic games but had just the lightest fluffiest storylines ever. Meanwhile Haze looks like it's going to rival the Metal Gear Solid series in political and moral complexity. Bring on the Machiavellian plot twists!

  • Kojima considers MGS4 Limited Edition tin

You've seen the new video, so no doubt your excitement for Metal Gear Solid 4 has once again reached the dizzy heights it did after last year's E3. Now CVG is reporting that Hideo Kojima is currently contemplating releasing a Limited Edition. Sounds like a fun idea to us. Make it so, Hideo! While nothing more has really been said since it was mentioned in his latest "HIDECHAN Radio!" show, two weeks ago, that doesn't stop us from pondering on what such a tin could contain. Game? Check. Soundtrack? Would be nice. Artbook? Always fun to have. Replica bandana and dogtags? Why not! What would you like to see in there, if it ever materialises?

Much of this Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer, embedded above, will seem familiar from previously-shown footage (Tokyo Game Show, E3), but what's noticeable is the graphical upgrade the title has gone through since its last public sighting. Plus, clocking in at 14 minutes, you've got enough espionage intrigue to fill a half-hour TV drama. Grab some popcorn.Snake? Snaake? Snaaaaaaaaake!?[Via PS3 Fanboy, PlayFrance]

This one literally just came in -- Konami has released a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 and PlayFrance has the scoop. The trailer is similar to the E3 one released last year, but has a ton of additional content and has been remastered using the newest version of the MGS 4 engine, leading to a ton of little visual improvements. Animations, particle effects and over-all graphic fidelity have all definitely increased with this newest trailer - the scene where Old Snake puts the gun to his mouth, in particular, showcases some incredible lighting effects. It's great to see Konami hasn't been resting on their laurels, this new trailer shows a clear and marked improvement to a game that already looked amazing. The trailer ends with confirmation that the game will be coming out in 2007 - naysayers be damned. The new trailer clocks in at over 13 minutes in length and what a blissful 13 minutes they are. The final scene with Raiden is incredible and worth the time investment by itself. What are you doing? Check it out NOW -- it demands your attention.*Updated with embedded video - no more waiting for 20 minutes of buffering to watch some hot Snake action*Thanks for the headsup Humpty![Via N4G]

  • Metal Gear turns 20, gets re-released

In celebration of Metal Gear's 20th anniversary, Konami is planning to release every PlayStation Metal Gear Solid title in presumably new, special packaging, IGN reports. Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation will be priced 1500 yen, Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty for PS2 will be 1800 yen, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater for PS2 will be 2800 yen, and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops for PSP will be 2800 yen. A package containing all of these hits will also be available for 6900 yen.Unless these re-releases come with some significant additions, we find it unlikely that even hardcore Kojima fans will be throwing down their cash. Hopefully, this isn't the end of the 20th Anniversary announcements ... we're hoping for a Portable Ops sequel (and some more info on the ever-elusive Metal Gear Solid 4 would be nice too).[Update: IGN reports that a limited edition DVD will be packaged with the MGS bundle. Also, a new soundtrack CD will be made available. Check for details on the new official website.]

  • Konami to re-release every Metal Gear Solid in Japan

In celebration of the illustrious franchise's 20th anniversary and in aid of those newcomers who still find themselves saying, "METAL GEAR?!" Konami has revealed plans to re-release every modern Metal Gear title in Japan, beginning with the PlayStation's monumental (and so very awesome) Metal Gear Solid. Other titles sneaking onto store shelves will be the rug-pulling Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, culinary diverse epic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the PSP's portable opus, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.IGN notes that the games will be sold seperately, as well as in a Metal Gear Solid Collection package. Unless the included version of Metal Gear Solid 3 contains the feature-laden Subsistence disc, it would seem that the original Metal Gear warranting the celebration in the first place has been left out of the all-important loop -- a situation Snake himself is intimately familiar with. Then again, this is from the same Konami that released The Silent Hill Collection sans, you know, Silent Hill. At the very least, this disregard for roots fuels the hope for a (re)release outside of Japan.

  • BMG to distribute Konami's music online

The place may be overrun with deadly monstrosities and the overwhelming powers of darkness, but the tunes that echo throughout the hallways of Dracula's castle usually make the vampire killing ordeal worth it. Sensing that others might share the dark lord's fine taste in orchestral compositions, Konami has announced an agreement with Sony BMG Music to distribute its library of tunes through mobile service providers and online music retailers, including iTunes and Rhapsody. The deal encompasses soundtracks beyond those belonging to the obvious Dance Dance Revolution franchise, even catering to those that find the clanging pipes and grating gears of Silent Hill preferable to the latest Ashlee Simpson squealfest.Konami also promises to make its vast history of music available for purchase on its official website, though specific release dates have yet to be announced. • Hayter, voice of Snake, not involved in Metal Gear movie

    05.15.2007

While he'll be reprising the role of world-weary genetically altered supersoldier-cum-poet, Solid Snake, in Metal Gear Solid 4, David Hayter will not be playing a role -- either in front of or behind the camera -- in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.According to an exclusive report by IGN, the screenwriter slash actor pitched his treatment to the fat cats at Konami who, in their infinite and no doubt genetically enhanced wisdom, decided to pass. His take: "Metal Gear as the Apocalypse Now of the digital age, with Snake at the center of a swirling whirlpool of Genomic/military madness." Toss in a couple large-breasted villainesses, some gun-twirling cold war relics, and the requisite long-winded exposition on the swirling whirpool of genomic and military madness and it smells like ... victory.[Thanks, Paul; via MGS: TM]

  • Rumor: Metal Gear Solid 4 goes stealth until 2008

    05.14.2007

Gamestop customers who requested to be informed of any changes to the projected retail release date of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3 have received unsettling news that the game's new expected release isn't until March of 2008. The PS3 could really use a big blockbuster like this for its second holiday season -- somebody put a bee in God of War 3's bonnet already and start some buzz because third-party developers are flaking out.Remember to keep hope alive though, like Jack Tretton says, Sony didn't make the system for the first six months (or year for that matter) of its life, but for ten years. It'll all work itself out. We mean, look, there's still some exclusives left, there's Ratchet and Clank, Final Fantasy XIII, Lair, Super Rub a Dub, Heavenly Sword and, um, Little Big Planet. What's the Xbox 360 and Wii got? Halo 3, Mario and maybe Metroid, pffffft. Like those are going to sell systems.[Via PS3 Fanboy][Update: Made post more explicit and concise.]

  • D'oh! MGS: Portable Ops pulled, missing UK rating on UMD

    by
    Christopher Grant

    05.07.2007

Originally scheduled to go on sale last Friday, the European release of portable neck-breaking simulator Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has been delayed due to a rather unfortunate oversight: the omission of the BBFC stamp (think ESRB rating, but with an accent) from the UMD. Apparently, the box proudly displays the appropriate stamp, but the disc packaged inside went out stampless. Retailers were forced to return all copies of the game while (we imagine) the bean counters at Konami snuck up behind the forgetful graphic designer, broke their neck, and shoved 'em in a locker. • Whoops! Metal Gear Solid forgets rating; no longer on sale

    05.04.2007

Months after the US and Japanese release, Europeans were supposed to enjoy Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops today. To make up for the excruciating delay, the PAL version will feature new content not available in the other releases, such as new characters, maps and missions. However, it appears Europeans will have to wait a little bit longer, as the game has been delayed yet again. Why? According to Pocket Gamer, it appears that the box art artist forgot to include the BBFC (the UK equivalent of the ESRB) rating for the game.Without a rating on the box UMD, the game will not be sold at retailers. Whoops! This is a strange mishap, to say the least. It looks like European gamers will have to wait just a little bit longer as Konami fixes this mistake--but you guys are used to waiting, right?

  • Metal Gear Solid wins Best Portable Game award from Famitsu

What? A PSP game that isn't called LocoRoco finally wins an award? Japan's most popular gaming magazine, Famitsu, recently unveiled their Famitsu Awards winners. PSP earned a valuable nod by stealing the "Best Portable Game" award with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Kojima's latest adventure certainly earns the award, with some spectacular graphics and a deep single and multiplayer gaming experience. While PSP fans can celebrate this victory, it should be noted that Final Fantasy XII (PS2) and Pokemon Diamond & Pearl (DS) both won Game of the Year.[Via Gamasutra]

  • Kojima and Suda 51 tease Snatcher fans

    04.18.2007

Last Saturday, Suda 51's company Grasshopper Manufacture held the coolest event ever, at least for game nerds: Snake vs. Zombie vol. 2, a series of informal panel discussions by big names in the Japanese game industry, including Hideo Kojima, Shinji Mikami, ICO's Fumito Ueda, and Tetsuya Mizuguchi. There were also musical performances from Metal Gear Solid 3/Portable Ops soundtrack composer Norihiko Hibino and Silent Hill series producer and composer Akira Yamaoka. As if the mere existence of this event (and our non-attendance at said event) weren't causing us physical pain, now we have unbearable anticipation buzzing around in our heads. During a Kojima/Mikami panel hosted by Suda, Mikami, a man of taste, mentioned that his favorite Kojima game was Snatcher, to which the other two responded "Ah yes, Snatcher," followed by "Oh, should we announce it here?" To sum up, in italics, there is a possibility that Hideo Kojima and Suda 51 are collaborating on some kind of Snatcher game. We do not care if it is a sequel, a remake, a port, an action figure, or an official recipe for Neo Kobe Pizza. We want ten.

  • Kojima interview reveals MGS4 tidbits

    04.04.2007

Twenty years after the first Metal Gear game, creator Hideo Kojima is surprised he's sill working on the multimillion-selling series. This and other interesting tidbits came up in a recent interview with Kotaku. Among the relevant bits: Kojima reconfirms that Metal Gear Solid 4 is "aimed for the PS3" and won't go multiplatform. He suggests that rumors to the contrary persist "because 360 owners want it on 360, obviously." Take that, 360 fanboys. Kojima would like rumble in the new game, but isn't sure the controller technology will be available in time. As of now, the game is being built without rumble support. Will MGS4 be the last game in the series (as its predecessors were once supposed to be)? "It's really up to the users ... If users want more Metal Gear, then I will probably step up as producer, like the James Bond series does." Also see: Kojima apologizes for lack of edible koalas in MGS3

Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats has a new page: a Metal Gear Solid MySpace profile for "David" Snake (screen name solidsnake34). Some of the jokes are subtle; we recommend a viewing or two of Metal Gear Awesome for some clarity. (MGA may in fact not help at all, but we still recommend viewing it for a few chortles.) In case you're wondering and are too lazy to do some minor investigation, every link on the page directs you to VG Cats' real index. If you're viewing this after April 1, the page may be gone; feel free to use this gallery below as a time capsule for the event.%Gallery-2382%
