  • Core Metal Gear Solid 4 cast announced: Hayter's a player again

As if hearing the collective cries of those tossing and turning in their beds, gripped by the nightmare of having the English Metal Gear Solid 4 cast be comprised of Pauly Shore, Gilbert Gottfried and Macy Gray, comes Konami and their announcement of the game's core voice cast. David Hayter, whose vocal chords can effortlessly grind cinder blocks to dust, unsurprisingly reprises his role of Solid Snake, lending some world weariness to the protagonist as he strangles inept soldiers, babbles into his codec and asks why nobody is telling him the damn truth. (You can sample the man's voice for yourself in the latest Kojima Productions Report podcast.)Returning as Roy Campbell is Paul Eiding, who will once again regale you with tales of "the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork," as well as mention his unusual and unexpected desire for scissors. Rounding out the core cast is Christopher Randalph playing Hal "Otacon" Emmerich and Quinton Flynn portraying the widely reviled, androgynous nudist-turned-ninja, Raiden. With Metal Gear Solid 4's over-the-top plot still a closely guarded secret, no other English character voices have been announced. Cam Clarke ("Liquid?") seems a sure bet, as do most of the great actors from the previous games. After all, there's no indication that Hideo Kojima's PS3 game ("so far") will be anything less than an "expertly crafted and customized" experience.(See? Our clever choice of video still leaves us in the clear in case it's a disappointment.)[Via press release]

  • After DMC4, MS Germany wants MGS and FF

Boris Schneider-Johne, Product Manager of Microsoft Germany, is pleased that Devil May Cry 4 is headed to the Xbox 360. On his personal blog he posted a very simple message. Titled, "One down, two to go," it reads: Devil May Cry Final Fantasy Metal Gear Solid As IGN reports, many sites quickly speculated that Schneider-Johne was implying that Microsoft had plans to acquire the remaining franchises in the list. Schneider-Johne clarified in an update to his post that the list merely represents a personal wish list and doesn't reflect Microsoft as a whole. Personal wish list or not, there have certainly been rumblings that these major franchises could go multiplatform. Considering the rising cost of development, the success of the 360, and the rocky start of the PS3, it's not too far-fetched to think other series might make the jump as well.Anyone have any other PS3 exclusives they'd like to see on Xbox 360?

If you're at all curious as to what it feels like to utterly lose all semblance of sanity, you should focus your concentration on The Impossible Quiz Deluxe. Having spent most of our morning leaping through its flaming hoops and catering to its bizarre and relentless requests, we've concluded that the sensation is not too dissimilar from having moist strands of spaghetti run through your fingers. You just can't get a grip.Deviant Artist, Splapp-me-do, notes that the quiz is not truly impossible, though we're not convinced a mind capable of such unhinged questioning can be trusted. Regardless, be sure to give it a bash (or 29) and keep an eye out for those video game references. [Via Game|Life]

Metal Gear Solid 3 players have just over a month to get their 'Subsistence' online. Konami has passed along a brief notice that the game's servers will be permanently shut down on April 3:"The last day of online service for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence in North America will be April 2nd. Konami sincerely thanks all of the Subsistence online community for their dedication to the game and support of the Metal Gear Solid series."The notice concludes with a plug for Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, which also features online multiplayer modes. The PSP installment may keep fans from starving, but this latest development must stir some hunger pangs. We needs our MGS4.So what can you do for now? Start by signing the petition.

  • Marketing group gauges interest in MGS4 on 360

Evil Avatar reports on a recent marketing survey that's curious about your interest in Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360. The emailed questionnaire asked: "Would you like to see Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360?"; and "Would you buy an Xbox 360 just to play Metal Gear Solid 4?"While unnamed, Evil Avatar claims the "reputable" marketing group serves the interests of Microsoft (among other companies). Microsoft is a client of Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc., which created the survey, but it's unclear if the questions, which were accompanied by non-MGS4 questions, were commissioned by Microsoft or first posed by Konami -- or if the responses will have any affect on Konami's current stance. Whatever the case, someone out there is still "polling" for a multi-platform release...The survey also included this somewhat relevant question: "On a scale of 0-100, with zero being not at all satisfied and 100 being very satisfied, how would you rate Konami's output on Xbox 360 to date?" Um, really? Geez, can we go with a negative number? 'Cause not only did Bomberman: Act Zero and Rumble Roses XX fail to satisfy, they offended us. (At least we have all those Xbox Live Arcade ports...) So to answer the initial question, "yes" -- to whomever is listening -- Metal Gear Solid 4 is not only a game we'd "like to see" on Xbox 360, it's absolutely necessary (in order for us to be satisfied with Konami's 360 output).Update: identified marketing group that conducted the survey; clarified why MGS4 is "absolutely necessary."

Bloggers love rumors. It's a scientific fact. Rumors provide us with a nourishment that neither videogames nor meaningful relationships can provide, especially rumors about Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Xbox 360. This one comes to us from Evil Avatar. It seems there is a survey circulating that asks some very pointed questions about MGS4. A few questions from the survey: "Would you like to see Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360?" "Would you buy an Xbox 360 just to play Metal Gear Solid 4?" "On a scale of 0-100, with zero being not at all satisfied and 100 being very satisfied, how would you rate Konami's output on Xbox 360 to date?"The survey reportedly comes from a reputable marketing company, one that compiles political exit polls and even has Microsoft as one of its major clients. Of course, the question is who made the survey? Is it Konami testing the waters for a possible port of MGS4, or did Microsoft organize the survey to plead their case to Konami? It's tough to say, but it's worth noting that this particular rumor seems to consistently resurface. How would you rate Konami's 360 output so far? Would Metal Gear Solid 4 change your mind?

  • Columbia Pictures acquiring Metal Gear movie rights, Ghost Rider producer onboard

Columbia Pictures, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, is reportedly in negotiations with Konami for the rights to adapt Metal Gear Solid for the cinema; as breifly noted by Sony exec Yair Landau earlier this week at D.I.C.E. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia has assigned Ghost Rider producer Michael De Luca to the project, while MGS creator Hideo Kojima and JEA's Rick Privman will serve as executive producers. Privman is also the executive producer of the upcoming film version of survival horror game Siren.Sony producers Doug Belgrad (The Grudge 2) and Sam Dickerson will also be involved with the live-action adaptation; and Josh Bratman, who works for De Luca and introduced the project to Sony, will continue to act as a consultant. Plot details and casting prospects remain unknown.[Thanks, Nitroid]

  • Sony Pictures producing Metal Gear Solid movie

Shortly after delivering his convergence keynote at this year's D.I.C.E. summit, the vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed to Gamespot that Sony's film studio would be responsible for dragging Metal Gear Solid into the cinema. "We're working with the Metal Gear guys," says Yair Landau. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'" Lead Metal Gear guy, Hideo Kojima, announced the film at last year's E3, though barely any details have surfaced since then. Apart from crushing the hopes of Dr. Boll, Kojima and co. have said nothing with respect to casting, directing or script. A safe assumption sees Solid Snake strangling inept soldiers and battling at least one psychopath with a penchant for babbling about the philosophical hangups of dropping nuclear bombs ... on the rainforest. The real trick will be to provide a film more entertaining than the infamous Metal Gear Awesome (embedded after the break for old time's sake). Landau also hinted at an Everquest movie from Sony Pictures, but declined to name the supposedly esteemed producer attached to it. If it winds up being an epic tale of elven mana dealers and over-the-top dragon chases, we'll know it was Jerry Bruckheimer.

  • Fan-translation of Kojima's Policenauts nears completion

While most American gamers know Hideo Kojima as the man behind the blockbuster Metal Gear Solid franchise, the two games he worked on before breaking out with MGS are considered forgotten masterpieces. One, Snatcher, saw a limited U.S. release on the ill-fated Sega CD. The other, Policenauts, has never been available in English. That seems poised to change, though, as Kojima fan-site Junker HQ has just announced the completion of a five-year project to translate the game's text. Only some technical work remains before the translation is released as a patch on the newly relaunched policenauts.net, currently targeted for the second half of 2007. Theoretically, the patch will require a CD-R, an official Japanese version of the game and a modded PlayStation to work, but emulator-compatible ISOs are sure to leak out for the less scrupulous among us. While you wait, check out the game's Wikipedia entry to get some idea of what made the game so special. [Via MetalGearsolid.org]

Tide us over? What does that even mean? If to tide is plural and group-inclusive, what's the singular? It's probably nothing... tide? Like, with the sea? To "ebb in and out" us over? Stupid sayings that only make sense because they're old sayings with implied meanings... thus getting assigned appropriately fitting definitions. That was a really strange rant -- I apologize. Anyway, there's a batch of new Metal Gear Solid 4 screenshots to set as your wallpaper or whatever you want. They're neat, but we'd really like to know how this game is progressing! Will we get a demo soon? A downloadable trailer (preferably a new one)? Or will we be kept in the dark, akin to Raiden in MGS2 about the... (sigh) no spoilers, but suffice to say it's pretty messed up storywise. Enjoyable, though. Thoroughly enjoyable.

In a recent interview with GamePro, Metal Gear Solid creator, Hideo Kojima, intimated that he wants to develop for the Xbox 360. When asked about the possibility of developing for the Xbox 360, Kojima states that he is interested in the idea, and notes that the 360 is selling very well in areas outside of Japan (in other words, 360=Money). Kojima also says that he's a fan of Gears of War (wonder what his Gamertag is ... BigBoss69 maybe?). Adding fuel to the undying rumor-fire that is Metal Gear Sold 4 on the 360, Kojima uses interesting wording regarding the game, "MGS4 is only for the PS3 so far."Did you see that? "So far." In PR terms, that leaves many windows open for Metal Gear Solid 4 to appear on other platforms. Granted, it's not an assurance that it will happen, but as hungry fanboys, we'll take what we can get.[Via Joystiq]

In a recent Gamepro interview, Hideo Kojima makes it clear that his aspirations involve more than just the Playstation 3. The Metal Gear designer notes that he eventually wants to develop for the Wii, the Xbox 360 (he's a fan of Gears of War, you know) and the "world-wide platform" that is the PC. "I want to do it. But our staff, especially the younger ones, don't so much like to work on the PC. If it was PC, we don't have to go into some crappy things with the first parties."Going by Kojima's earlier steak dinner and movie analogies, we suppose he can now be interpreted as a rabid film critic wandering about town, randomly bursting into houses and demanding delicious steaks. Of course, PC gaming needs to fit in there somewhere -- is it like leveling up your own livestock, shortly before slaughtering it and eating it alone?Read the interview and make your own conclusions. Watch out for Kojima stating that "MGS4 is actually for the PS3 only so far."[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

As you can see from the map above, Hideo Kojima's plan to launch a secret army in Japan is working quite well. A new service uses Google Maps to show you the points of interest you'll want to hit in order to recruit new characters via Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops' unique and innovative GPS mode. Although an English language version of this service is supposedly "coming soon," I wouldn't be surprised if it never saw the light of day: certainly, it would be a far more demanding undertaking to travel across the entirity of America in order to unlock as many characters as possible.Of course, the true Metal Gear fans have already started their cross-country trek.[Via Pocket Gamer]See also:Unlock all of MGS:PO's unique characters

How's it go? Good things come to those who wait? In April, when Konami releases the European version of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, the wait will be rewarded with new content. Here's a breakdown of the extras (via NeoGAF): New "Boss Battle" mode allows players to unlock additional (unconfirmed) characters for recruitment At least 12 new characters will reportedly be added Existing characters will get expanded careers, which now focus on key attributes Two new multiplayer maps will be added It's possible that a patch could be released to update the Japanese and US versions of Portable Ops; but if not, PSP's region freedom ensures that diehards will be able to enjoy the new content no matter where their locations. Would you buy this game twice?Update: changed "PAL" qualifiers to "European."

My mom always said "Good things come to those who wait" and my dad always said "You just wait around for good things to happen to you". Well because of Konami, I'm now going to ignore everything my dad ever said to me. IGN is reporting that PAL territories will be getting Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops content that neither Japan or the US got. The original game's content will be joined with twelve new characters, new maps and new missions. That's not all though, there will also be a Boss Battle mode which the point of should be fairly obvious. I only hope that at some point this content is made available as a download for current owners of Metal Gear. Check IGN for the more details.
