How much do you like Metal Gear? Unless you're dressing up like Solid Snake to go grocery shopping, probably not as much as freelancing superstar, "Downtown" Dan Dormer. Yes, the man of a thousand nick names has hopped on board the analyzation train and stood on the rails long enough to deliver this in-depth look at the latest Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer.Dan's two-part analysis (the second of which can be found behind the cut) is serious business and covers everything from shadowy figures you may have missed the first time to the military vernacular that may still be baffling you. So grab a drink and call a friend up on your codec ... it's business time.

  • Overheard@E3: ZOMG, are they playing Metal Gear Solid 4?

The media was kicked out of the Fairmont Hotel very quickly after the Konami press conference. Maybe it was our continuous E3 coverage, which has left us awake for 48 hours ... but we moved as slowly as zombies on our way out. Good thing we waited! Because as we stayed behind, we heard the sounds of massive explosions in the auditorium. Gun fire and screams could be heard for minutes. Our interest was piqued, so we tried to look past the black curtain. Unfortunately, we were stopped before we could see anything of significance.A neighboring attendee shared our suspicions with us: "OMG, are they playing Metal Gear Solid 4?"

  • Metal Gear Solid 4: PS3 exclusive, like it always was

At Sony's conference, a lot of games were spotlighted. We mean a lot. While we'd love to go over the 15 first party exclusives, you all know them already, we're sure. So, we're going to move along and debunk the most annoying rumor we've had to put up with for the past year. Metal Gear Solid 4 was announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive during the conference, met with a loving nod by our favorite Hideo Kojima (we know about twenty, but this one is our favorite). Hopefully this dispels rumors completely. Set for an early 2008 simultaneous worldwide release, MGS4 has come along nicely and has a new trailer up on the PS Store, as you may know. Well, get ready to hear all the "timed exclusive" rumors now, which we're a little more ready to agree to. But not happy about.

  • Konami may "take some steps" away from MGS4 exclusivity

Who knows, perhaps all this time, Konami was waiting for an excuse to make Metal Gear Solid 4 a multiplatform title. They think the price cut won't significantly increase sales of the PS3, which we feel differently about. This isn't coming from Kojima, who ultimately has control over the fate of Metal Gear Solid 4, but from Konami's North America and Europe boss, Kazumi Kitaue. He said "I don't expect a substantial impact... With USD 500, you can buy a personal computer." Oh, really? What would that computer be able to do? Word process and search the internet. S'about it.This is the big quote people are jumping all over: "Since Metal Gear was born on the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps." What this means to us is exactly what we've predicted. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a timed exclusive if the game does not sell systems. We think it will, but we don't think it will be enough for Konami, so they'll release MGS4 on the 360 about a year later. Sucks for loyal Sony fans, but it's the most likely situation.

Talking to Reuters, head of Konami's North American and European operations Kazumi Kitaue expressed their less than optimistic feelings about the PS3 and its latest price cut. "I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100" Kitaue said, "I don't expect a substantial impact ... With $500, you can buy a personal computer". Very opinionated and strong words coming from a developer who is supposedly creating a highly anticipated game (see Metal Gear Solid 4) exclusively for Sony. So, it's even more interesting and revealing to hear Kitaue's response to a question asking about MGS 4 exclusivity where he goes on to say that "Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps".There you go fanboys, we've added some fuel to the Metal Gear Solid 4 is 360 bound fire as it has yet to be drowned out. You're welcome.[Thanks, blackrome]

  • Kojima Productions announces new MGS4 trailer at E3

This post serves as a sort of double-whammy. A really cool new trailer of Metal Gear Solid 4, rumored to be voiced in English, will appear at E3. This trailer will appear at the "Sony and Konami Conference" portion of the Electronic Entertainment Expo. This will probably be the only place MGS4 will pop up, so, sorry 360 owners, but we don't think you'll get that MGS4 on 360 announcement just yet.The trailer is, as we've said, supposedly voiced in English, but also will detail an entirely new environment. We'd been wondering when Snake and the gang would get out of the dismal, cow-robot overrun city. Chances are, though, it won't be horribly different from what we've already seen. It's rare that Kojima and crew show off later parts of a game before the release, but we might get a glimpse of what to expect. Perhaps something a little more futuristic than a middle-eastern city? Like ... a space station! That'd be a change.[Thanks, TheGuy!][via NeoGAF]

  • New MGS4 trailer debuting at E3, Sony and Konami keynotes

The Kojima Report podcast -- one of our favorite 'casts by the by -- has confirmed the not terribly surprising news that a new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer will debut during the Sony and Konami E3 keynotes next week. Since Sony's keynote is chronologically first -- next Wednesday at 2:30pm Pacific -- we'll just count down the minutes until then. About 7-1/2 minutes in, host Ryan Payton starts talking about the "brand-new" trailer which will, for the first time, be available in English. Of course, Konami also showed off new trailers for Snake's latest adventure at last year's E3 and TGS expos (both conveniently embedded after the break) so we're not entirely shocked. We suppose the lack of a Microsoft conference screening shouldn't come as a surprise either ... but we're still not convinced.[Via NeoGAF]

You've seen the new video, so no doubt your excitement for Metal Gear Solid 4 has once again reached the dizzy heights it did after last year's E3. Now CVG is reporting that Hideo Kojima is currently contemplating releasing a Limited Edition. Sounds like a fun idea to us. Make it so, Hideo! While nothing more has really been said since it was mentioned in his latest "HIDECHAN Radio!" show, two weeks ago, that doesn't stop us from pondering on what such a tin could contain. Game? Check. Soundtrack? Would be nice. Artbook? Always fun to have. Replica bandana and dogtags? Why not! What would you like to see in there, if it ever materialises?

This one literally just came in -- Konami has released a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 and PlayFrance has the scoop. The trailer is similar to the E3 one released last year, but has a ton of additional content and has been remastered using the newest version of the MGS 4 engine, leading to a ton of little visual improvements. Animations, particle effects and over-all graphic fidelity have all definitely increased with this newest trailer - the scene where Old Snake puts the gun to his mouth, in particular, showcases some incredible lighting effects. It's great to see Konami hasn't been resting on their laurels, this new trailer shows a clear and marked improvement to a game that already looked amazing. The trailer ends with confirmation that the game will be coming out in 2007 - naysayers be damned. The new trailer clocks in at over 13 minutes in length and what a blissful 13 minutes they are. The final scene with Raiden is incredible and worth the time investment by itself. What are you doing? Check it out NOW -- it demands your attention.*Updated with embedded video - no more waiting for 20 minutes of buffering to watch some hot Snake action*Thanks for the headsup Humpty![Via N4G]

  • Konami to re-release every Metal Gear Solid in Japan

    by

    05.30.2007

In celebration of the illustrious franchise's 20th anniversary and in aid of those newcomers who still find themselves saying, "METAL GEAR?!" Konami has revealed plans to re-release every modern Metal Gear title in Japan, beginning with the PlayStation's monumental (and so very awesome) Metal Gear Solid. Other titles sneaking onto store shelves will be the rug-pulling Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, culinary diverse epic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the PSP's portable opus, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.IGN notes that the games will be sold seperately, as well as in a Metal Gear Solid Collection package. Unless the included version of Metal Gear Solid 3 contains the feature-laden Subsistence disc, it would seem that the original Metal Gear warranting the celebration in the first place has been left out of the all-important loop -- a situation Snake himself is intimately familiar with. Then again, this is from the same Konami that released The Silent Hill Collection sans, you know, Silent Hill. At the very least, this disregard for roots fuels the hope for a (re)release outside of Japan.

In the past few days rumors have been a flutter over a Swedish gaming magazine confirming that Metal Gear Solid 4 would be making its way to the Xbox 360 in 2008. The source, a supposedly translated piece from the magazine's article posted on the Xbox.com forums. Well, from what we can tell, this rumor is made up crud that some fanboy whipped together to stir the rumor pot. But why do we cry falsity?

  • Here we go again with the MGS4 defection rumors ...

    by
    Nick Doerr

    05.28.2007

We've danced the dance of Solid Snake "defecting" to the Xbox 360 for ages now. Every week Kojima has to fend off more unsubstantiated rumors about Metal Gear Solid 4 deciding to take a multiplatform route, stating time and again that the title was built for the PS3 from the ground up. Anyway, this latest rumor comes from the, oddly enough, Xbox forums, referring to a Swedish magazine called "Super Play" that supposedly confirmed the multiplatformizationism of the hotly anticipated game. From the translation given on the Xbox forums: " ... sole owners of Wii and Xbox 360 would have to do without [Metal Gear Solid 4]. Fortunately, Konami isn´t completely blind to the fact that more gamers deserve to play this epic title, and it is now confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Xbox 360 will launch a year later in November 2008. It will come with new content additions including VR missions and other bonus gameplay like Snake Tales, which lets you go on more objective-based missions -- some quite lengthy. So, there's no question that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Xbox 360 comes packed with more content than the original PS3-version."To this we ask, "really?" and tilt our heads coyly. We've been told so many times how it's been tailored just for the PS3 and couldn't be done elsewhere. Yeah, that's PR spin, but we'd like to believe it. Timed exclusives aren't that bad, but giving Microsoft the extra content? Will we be able to download it for free? We're not saying this rumor is true or not, but we're guessing not. Here's why: Super Play is a small, independent magazine. There are no quotes from Konami publishers. This news isn't hitting the internet like a wildfire confirmation. So, to us, it's crap until Kojima nods or dissents. You?

  • Konami expects Metal Gear Solid 4 by March '08

    05.22.2007

If Metal Gear Solid 4 remains a PlayStation 3 exclusive -- as Konami insists it will -- Sony can expect to sell plenty more systems by March 31, 2008. What's the significance of that date, you ask? It's the end of Konami's fiscal year, in which they expect "new titles will also continue to be released for game consoles in widespread use, along with the long awaited Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3."Whether or not the highly anticipated neck-breaking sim will see a release before the end of the calendar year, hitting the lucrative holiday shopping season, is anyone's guess but at the rate Old Man Snake is aging, we hope it will. • Kojima Report podcast talks MGS4 on 360

Every ten-thousand years or so, an event of such magnitude occurs that life, as we know it, is changed forever. Nope, Metal Gear Solid 4 hasn't been announced for the Xbox 360 (yet) but that didn't stop some 1UP guys from cramming into the Kojima Report podcast and talking about the possibility of the genetically-enhanced aging super soldier simulator, Metal Gear Solid 4, coming to the 'box. Kojima Reports' Ryan Payton ducked into a locker, stating, "... we have not changed the game in any form with the idea of 'oh, we got to do this on 360.' Put aside whether or not we're developing for 360 or not, the game is built on the PS3 hardware ... ." Using our relatively limited reading skills, we've managed to determine that one of two possible conclusions can be irresponsibly jumped to. The first: that the game will not be coming to the Xbox 360 and, as a result, they haven't changed anything; the second: the Xbox 360 introduced no limitations to their production and, as a result, it didn't need any changing. Either way, the lesson we can all take away from this is that Kojima doesn't change things. Except his metaphors.

Uh oh. Looks like gaming behemoth Gamestop/EB Games is sending a dreaded email to gamers who preordered Metal Gear Solid 4. According to an email sent earlier today, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots been delayed from its tenative September 1st, 2007 date and is now expected March 1st, 2008. This isn't the first time a high-profile title hits a sudden postponement, but we were gearing up in anticipation for this title to hold us over through the holidays. Without the hugely anticipated title expected until 2008, it could cause Santa's little helpers to drop off something else under the tree. Lets all hope this one doesn't quite pan out as the email indicates.

  • Kojima interview reveals MGS4 tidbits

Twenty years after the first Metal Gear game, creator Hideo Kojima is surprised he's sill working on the multimillion-selling series. This and other interesting tidbits came up in a recent interview with Kotaku. Among the relevant bits: Kojima reconfirms that Metal Gear Solid 4 is "aimed for the PS3" and won't go multiplatform. He suggests that rumors to the contrary persist "because 360 owners want it on 360, obviously." Take that, 360 fanboys. Kojima would like rumble in the new game, but isn't sure the controller technology will be available in time. As of now, the game is being built without rumble support. Will MGS4 be the last game in the series (as its predecessors were once supposed to be)? "It's really up to the users ... If users want more Metal Gear, then I will probably step up as producer, like the James Bond series does." Also see: Kojima apologizes for lack of edible koalas in MGS3

    04.01.2007

The guys over at vg resource center are adding fuel to the Metal Gear Solid 4 coming to the 360 rumor. Supposedly, they received an email from an anonymous source at Konami stating that Xbox 360 owners would be seeing MGS 4 roughly six months after launch. In effect, a timed exclusive for the PS3. The email also goes on to say that Konami has "been working with Microsoft so the 360 and PC versions will both take advantage of Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live, with such features as achievements and the ability for 360 and PC owners to play against each other in multiplayer" Interesting isn't it? Just from that sentence we're going to have to call bullcrap on this rumor, especially since they're claiming to allow PC and Live players to play against eachother. How many games have fully integrated this feature and how much of an undertaking would it be? The undertaking would be massive and is especially odd since MGS 4 would have initially been a PS3 exclusive. There's definitely a chance that we'll be seeing MGS 4 on the 360, but only a 2% chance it'd be integrated into Live for Windows. Sorry everyone, we're going say "blah" to this Konami contact.[Thanks, djphatjive]

  • Metal Gear Solid 4 welcomes David Hayter back!

David Hayter is holding onto his role as Solid Snake in the Metal Gear series, not surprisingly. For those of you who don't know, Hayter is not only an accomplished voice actor, but he also penned the screenplay for the first X-Men movie and co-wrote the screenplay for X2. Good stuff, that. If you check out any pictures of the guy, at least from Metal Gear Solid era, he'll even resemble Solid Snake a bit."Joining Hayter, voice actors Quinton Flynn, Paul Eiding and Christopher Randolph will also return as the voices of Raiden, Roy Campbell and Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich, respectively." So we can expect all the same voices for all the same people that matter. No mention of Meryl's voice actor, but whatever. Maybe she's silent. Now if only the Xenosaga games could have held this kind of consistency...[Thanks, Jonah!]
