  • MP3 tokens award in-game tasks

While the attempt resembles nothing of Microsoft's system of achievements, in spirit it might. Apparently, as part of a feature that promotes sharing your progress in the game with friends, Metroid Prime 3 will utilize tokens, in different color varieties. Each token will be awarded for in-game tasks completed. The tokens come in four different colors: red, blue, green and gold. Reds are awarded for scanning enemies and items, blue for scanning lore and completing side missions, green comes from tokens gifted by friends and gold is received for defeating bosses on various difficulties. If this all says one thing to us, it says "replay value." So, we're expecting a huge game and it looks like we're getting it.[Via Joystiq]

  • Metroid Prime 3's token feature a small taste of achievements

It's not the system-wide accomplishment tracking that we've grown to love on the Xbox 360 (some more so than others), but according to a GoNintendo tipster, Nintendo fans will get a taste of the sweet life on August 27th when Metroid Prime 3 finally lands on the Wii with bonus content for in-game tokens. So how does it work? The tokens are doled out in four tiers: red, blue, green and gold. Red tokens are gained by scanning enemies and items, blue for scanning lore and completing side quests, green ones you receive from friends and gold is achieved by destroying bosses on various difficulties.According to the tipster, tokens can be traded in for bonus content in-game, but are also used to track progress amongst your friends. Vouchers for those friends can be found and then sent in the form of green tokens as well. We've seen these tokens in recent videos of Metroid Prime 3, but we may have a wait ahead of us to find out exactly how they function.

We're all about this Metroid month thing -- but are you? Do you hope to see similar marketing schemes for other big titles for the Wii? Certainly, we hope the video trend continues. Would you like to see this done for third party titles as well? Can you think of anything else you'd like to see them add, content-wise?

Two more Metroid Prime 3: Corruption videos are now available for download. We just went to check them out and the first video got stuck buffering for an inordinately long amount of time. Luckily, for emergency non-Wii-loading video situations, there's good old YouTube. The first video describes the Phazon Enhancement Device, which GF Marines use to boost their abilities temporarily. Basically, it's like Bane's Venom tube thing, or some kind of spinach delivery device. The other video, Air Assault, contains gameplay footage of what looks like a boss battle. The antagonist is airborne, and shoots stuff at Samus! It's really quite an invigorating way to start your morning.[Via GoNintendo]

Metroid. Prime. 3. So close to release. After delays and forgotten promises of online play, will this be the first great Wii first-person shooter? This new GameTrailers clip gives no idea to how this thirst quenching title will control. We're trying to to get sucked into the hype. (There's that other game to strum us into a frenzy for now.) But here's hoping that Metroid will be a much-needed oasis. (The thing in the desert, not the band.)See the new video for this August 27 game after the break.

A new trailer for Metroid Prime 3 focuses on an awful familiar... uh, "face." That's right: Mother Brain appears front and center in "Aurora Unit," the newest preview video being featured on Wii consoles everywhere. After a number of confusing lobe-focused shots, the scene pictured above is shown, revealing the layout of Ma Brain's oh-so-famous Tourian hangout, and essentially confirming that the big boss of both Metroid and Super Metroid will at least be making a cameo appearance. But how large a role will she play? The non-gameplay footage is labeled "Cross section of future aurora complex." Does this mean we won't be battling Mother Brain in Prime 3? Will the reconstruction of Zebes be a part of the storyline? Take a gander at the video after the break, and let us know what you think.

  • Wii games pepper nomination list for E3 awards

The Game Critics Association has released their list of nominations for the best of E3, and Nintendo is all over the place -- particularly with Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit. The DS may have been spurned for anything other than the handheld category, but the Wii sure seems to be holding its own against the 360 and PS3. Unfortunately, however, none of the Wii titles made it into the nominations for Best of Show. We'll skip over multiplatform titles like Guitar Hero III, but Wii games showed up in several categories: Best Social/Casual/Puzzle Game (Wii Fit, Zack & Wiki) Best Fighting Game (WWE SmackDown vs RAW 2008) Best Action/Adventure Game (Super Mario Galaxy) Best Action Game (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption) Best Hardware (Balance Board, Zapper) Best Console Game (Super Mario Galaxy) Best Original Game (Wii Fit, de Blob) An interesting mix of games -- some expected, some surprises. The winners will be announced next Tuesday. Think a few Wii games will pull out wins?

Nintendo fans, rejoice. Metroid Prime 3 is going to be the best Metroid Prime game yet. It's been burdened with the enormous task of fulfilling Nintendo's promise of providing unsurpassed FPS controls through the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Surprisingly, Metroid Prime 3 has more than delivered in this near-final E3 build. Not only do the controls work exactly as we'd like them to, Retro Studios has surprised us by fleshing out the Metroid experience with its most ambitious story yet.Long-time Metroid fans will appreciate the game's opening moments. We're taken inside Samus' trademark space ship. Have we ever been here before? Interfacing with the ship through the Wii Remote certainly felt exciting, allowing players to control Samus' ship -- something we can't remember ever doing in the series' history. Players will touch various panels within the ship, and pull a lever, providing a simple facsimile of piloting a real space ship.As you dock your ship in a battleship, you'll meet a small army of NPCs. Imagine our surprise when they referred to Samus' previous exploits, fully voiced. In the game's opening moments, Samus will be able to interact with characters that feature full voice acting, seemingly a rarity in modern Nintendo-published efforts. We appreciate the series attempting to connect Corruption to the previous Prime games, but we have to admit that the heavy-handed nature of the story caught us a little off-guard. Watching the Galactic Federation talk about the conquest of the Space Pirates made us think we were watching Halo 2, not a Metroid Prime game. However, Metroid purists need not worry: Samus still goes on as a mute.%Gallery-3355%

Are you hoping for all the details on the new Metroid that are fit to print? Is it Boogie that gets you excited? Are you hoping Take-Two will reveal their plans for Manhunt 2 after the ESRB debacle? Are you crossing your fingers for some sign of Super Mario Galaxy? Or is it something else that gets you going? Let us know what game you hope shows up in the news this week.

  • Wii Warm Up: A question of multiplayer

    by
    Alisha Karabinus

We like online gaming as much as the next set of obsessive gamers; in fact, we even brave the friend code system on the DS every week, like clockwork, just to throwdown via the WiFi network. But just because we like it -- and sometimes prefer it -- does that mean that every game with available multiplayer needs to have online multiplayer? For that matter, does every game even need a multiplayer mode? Obviously, we're thinking here about the recent confirmation that Metroid Prime 3 will have no online multiplayer, but it applies to a lot of things. Let's take Wii Sports, for example. Tons of fun! Could in fact be online! But does it need to be? The philosophy behind Wii Sports seems to be that playing with others -- in person -- is fun. Isn't the philosophy behind the Metroid series pretty centered on the themes of loneliness and isolation, as well as exploration? With games like Saint's Row and Halo on the Xbox, online multiplayer makes perfect sense. Whether we want it or not aside ... is it really right for Metroid? We'll definitely come on board and say that we hope that the Wii boasts many online games by the time its cycle ends. We particularly hope for at least one or two great FPS games with online multiplayer, but perhaps that's a dream. Still, is it worth hoping for online multiplayer when it runs counter to the central idea behind a franchise or game ... and worse yet, should we be hoping for multiplayer from a team who has yet to show us that they can even manage decent local multiplayer, much less online?Sure, online modes add replayability, and that's always nice. But if that's all we need in a game, should Nintendo start tacking online multiplayer onto Zelda games, for instance?

Michael Kelbeugh, head of Retro Studios, confirmed to GamePro that no online multiplayer would be included in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, much to the relief of of lil' Timmy Eldridge, the apple-cheeked teen that Nintendo has come in on the weekend to run their online gaming strategy. "Unless you're sending pictures of metroid that you captured, I really don't know how to help you," lil' Eldridge said as he swept the Nintendo commissary (his weekday job). For his part, Kelbeugh gave the credit for a top-notch single-player campaign for his team's inability to include newfangled multiplayer technology. "It's something we talked about early on, but we only have so many resources. We opted to devote those resources to making a better single-player experience." Oh well, we guess there's always Metroid Prime 4.

Nintendo is trying to trick us!Metroid Prime 3 isn't releasing on August 20th as Nintendo previously stated, but instead the true date for its release is more dark and sinister than we could ever imagine. It comes via a network of super-secret spies, living a life of danger and espionage just so you can have the gaming news you crave. Many Bothans died bringing us this news. What news? Metroid Prime 3 is releasing a full week later than we expected. Our spies found this information buried at the bottom of the latest Phantom Hourglass press release issued, where Nintendo was sure nobody would bother to look. Sorry, Nintendo, we're the kind of people who read the whole press release. Why would the game be released a week later? What would Nintendo need the extra 7 days for? What was that about hats again?%Gallery-3355%

And they thought nobody would notice! Buried at the bottom of the press release trumpeting The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass' October 1 release date is the following: "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the third installment of the hit trilogy, launches with motion-sensitive controls exclusively on Wii on Aug. 27."Those of you with August 20th marked on your Exotic Wildlife of Zebes calendars aren't imagining that release date, Nintendo announced it (along with the release dates for a bunch of other titles) back in May. What has this lesson taught us? First and foremost, don't use indelible marker on your calendars, you should really know better by now. Second, just in case this is a simple typo we've contacted Nintendo for confirmation of the new release date. [Update: and they've confirmed the new release date.]... stay strong.[Thanks, vidGuy]

  • Metroid Prime 3 boxart revealed

    06.29.2007

You know, I was sitting here and enjoying a nice bowl of oatmeal, when suddenly a small and frightening object came crashing into my office here at Wii Fanboy Estates. It was none other than Joystiq's Ludwig Kietzmann. "I have something for you, David," he said, shortly before slapping me in the mouth. As the universal Joystiq greeting, I felt obliged to return the gesture, but so hard was Ludwig's smack, I found myself on the floor before having time to react. Clearly, he had put some time in with the company."We've got Metroid Prime 3 boxart!" he said, slamming a sheet of paper down onto my collection of milk crates I call a desk. As I picked myself up off the ground and looked the sheet over, I stroked my chin in a manner that most people do when they're looking over a sheet of paper. "So ... what game is ...?" I ask, only to find myself slapped again before the last syllable escapes my mouth. Then, Ludwig jams another piece of paper in my face, one that shows off boxart for a certain Sega title called Sonic Adventure 2. "We must warn the people!" he screamed, as he jumped out of the window like a flying rodent escaping a dark underworld. I wondered if he was dead (my office is on the 73rd floor), when just then I saw him atop a flying hyena, off toward the sunset. "That Ludwig," I think to myself. "He sure is one awesome dude." I then realize my wallet is missing. And so is one of my kidneys.%Gallery-3355%[Via Joystiq]

Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Rest assured, everything will be totally made-up and unfounded. Except, of course, when we speak about all the ass Reggie is going to kick. That part? Totally true. Rumor: The August 20th release date of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption will be revealed to be incorrect. Nintendo will instead announce that the game is available now on store shelves across the country. Sega Saturn, anyone?

According to a reader at GoNintendo, stuffed within the pages of the latest issue of Play magazine are a few impressions from the staff's romp with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption at the Nintendo Media Summit. According to Play, Corruption is aimed at Metroid fans and hardcore gamers alike but will still be accessible to grandma thanks to intuitive controls. The game's long delay was to add a "Twilight Princess level of polish" and, in the magazine's own words, Corruption could be the "biggest revolution in FPS gaming since Halo". Mighty strong opinions from playtesting the demo, but we'll be able to find out for ourselves on August 20.
