Later this year, there'll be two brand new motoring shows on our screens: Top Gear, led by Chris Evans, and an original Amazon series fronted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. That would normally be enough for any pertrolhead, but the BBC has found a little more room for some extra programming. Today, the Beeb announced that it will launch an online-only spinoff called Extra Gear, which will be hosted by Top Gear presenter Rory Reid and feature behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and "specially-recorded films" that aren't in the main show.

With an Amazon series well underway, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are turning their attention to other projects. As Variety reports, they've teamed up with entrepreneur Ernesto Shcmitt and Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman to build a community-driven motoring site. It's called DriveTribe and will launch this fall with a team of 20 full-time employees. The specifics are a little woolly, but the idea is that each "tribe" will be managed by a celebrity, writer or filmer like the Clarkson crew, creating and curating content for their fellow motorheads.

While Clarkson, May and Hammond develop a new motoring show for Amazon, the BBC is working on its biggest Top Gear reboot in years. Presenter Chris Evans (no, not Captain America) is taking over Clarkson's role and revealed last weekend exactly when the first episode will be airing. Well, sort of. During the BBC's live Saturday Kitchen show he said it would be broadcast on Sunday, May 5th. Which would be fine, if May 5th wasn't actually a Thursday. Whoops. The Guardian seems to have cleared up the issue though, clarifying that filming will finish on May 5th before the first episode airs on May 8th.

Ever since Jeremy Clarkson punched a producer in a row over steak, the future of Top Gear has been completely up in the air. The BBC appears to have distanced itself completely, leaving Clarkson and his co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond to speak to other broadcasters about creating a brand new motoring show. Over the past few weeks, it's been suggested that streaming giant Netflix is the favourite to pick up the trio, and today The Mirror has added more fuel to the fire after it reported that the new show already has a name: House of Cars.
