Sony continues to use its new licensing partnerships to interesting effect. The company has partnered up with ESC-Toys to create Nathan Drake vinyl toys. The freaky interpretations of the Uncharted hero are designed by none other than ESC-Toy's founder, Erick Scarecrow. (Clearly, he takes his namesake quite seriously.)We're not too keen on the design, but we're sure collectors will still go ga-ga over this somewhat-terrifying Jason-inspired toy. The toys will be released this Fall, just in time for Uncharted 2 and will be limited to 2500 pieces worldwide.

We ventured out to Naughty Dog studios yesterday to check out the eagerly anticipated sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The bad news? We didn't get to play it. We instead watched Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells take Nathan Drake through the paces. Nothing makes your palm itch more than watching someone else play a game you're dying to get your hands on.The good news? It looks, perhaps unsurprisingly, very promising. With new abilities for Drake, better usage of the PlayStation 3 hardware and a curvy new love interest, Naughty Dog appears set to deliver a great sequel to 2007's critically acclaimed jungle romp. Check out our impressions after the break.%Gallery-43761%

click to enlarge Nathan Drake, Nathan Drake, does whatever ... a Nathan Drake ... can? Well, in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves -- we wonder if Sly Cooper's among them? -- Drake can clearly cling to new types of cover and sneak up on thieve-ier thieves, grab their shields, and basically do a whole heck of a lot more than he could in the first game. Which is good, right? It sure looks good in these direct-feed shots from developer Naughty Dog, which are both pretty and high in "res." %Gallery-43006%[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Uncharted dev: Nathan Drake already as big as Lara Croft

And by big, we don't mean his chest size.Naughty Dog's Uncharted made quite an impression when it debuted on PS3 in 2007. Nathan Drake was an incredibly likable character that resonated quite well with critics and gamers alike. "I think people like him because he's compelling, and a much needed breath of fresh air in an industry that's been a bit stale for a while, in terms of characters," Bruce Straley told CVG.When asked if Drake will ever be as popular as Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, he responded: "Why, do you think he's not already there, if not beyond that point already, in terms of popularity?" The lackluster sales of Lara's latest may suggest that gamers have found a new, better hero to raid tombs with.[Image Credit; Via Joystiq]

  • Nathan Drake beyond Lara Croft's popularity?

Oh Nathan, is it cold there in Lara's shadow? Not according to Naughty Dog's Bruce Straley, who told CVG that it's Lara Croft who should be shivering beneath the Uncharted hero's cover, not the other way around. Asked if Nathan could ever be as popular as Eidos' British spelunker, the Uncharted director responded with a question of his own, asking "Why, do you think he's not already there, if not beyond that point already, in terms of popularity?" He added that Drake adds a "much needed breath of fresh air in an industry that's been a bit stale for a while, in terms of characters." So cheeky, Mr. Straley, though Lara Croft was fresh once too, and time has a way of making even the most standout luminaries passé.

  • Tim Schafer muses on the wonders of Uncharted's 'half-tuck'

Avid readers of Joystiq and PS3 Fanboy know that we have a small crush on Tim Schafer. Why? You can find out for yourselves. After reading his latest blog entry on Uncharted, you may also become his fan."I just finished Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and I will tell you this: I liked it a lot. It had beautiful environments, fun platforming, and the awesome phrase, 'I'll kick you to sleep!' You should all go play it right now. It was all super next-gen, but the most next-gen thing about it to me was Drake's shirt. Check it out: Somehow it's tucked in, and yet not tucked in, at the very same time. Of all the technical marvels contained in Uncharted, this was the one that really mystified me."This is easily one of the most entertaining rants we've seen, that affirms both Uncharted's undeniable quality and the mysticism of the half-tucked shirt. And, coming from the mouth of Schafer himself -- you can know that this is truth.[Via NeoGAF]
