  • Snail Games (officially) announces wuxia MMO, Age of Wushu

    Have you ever been sitting around with your buddies and watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon while thinking to yourself, "Meh, I could do that"? If so, you're probably making a killing in martial arts tournaments and not reading Massively. But don't worry, there's still hope for the rest of us: Snail Games' upcoming free-to-play, wuxia-centric title, Age of Wushu is now officially announced. For the uninitiated, wuxia is a genre of literature, movies, and games which generally includes high-flying, acrobatic ass-kicking. The game will allow players to train under eight different martial art schools, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The press release boasts that the game features no levels or classes, warning players that "that beggar on the street may be a traveling Grand Master." Combat, unsurprisingly, is based on wuxia-style martial arts, and will feature what the team calls a "counter combat system," which makes it sound like combat could be based around a system of attacks, counters, reversals, and so forth, just like in true martial arts. Of course, no martial-arts combat system would be complete without Crouching-Tiger-Hidden-Dragon-style aerial fights, which Snail Games has certainly included. To top it off, random NPC events, 17 different professions, and 30 offline activities should help ensure that players have something to do no matter the circumstances.   • Portalarium announces Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale as first title

    Richard Garriott's recent startup, Portalarium, had many people wondering what would be the first thing to come out of this mad scientist's new studio. Well, wonder no more. Now we know that Portalarium's first title will be a Facebook game known as Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale, which focuses on -- you guessed it -- collecting things that you buy at garage sales. We couldn't make this up if we tried. Players can create an avatar and customize their houses, and then go shopping at estate sales, garage sales, pawn shops, and so forth in order to complete collections of items. These item collections can then be displayed in your house as a trophy of sorts, or you can sell them to make a quick buck. We'll just have to wait and see how this bizarre project shapes up in the coming months.

  • Goblinworks announces Pathfinder Online

    For pen-and-paper RPG players, Pathfinder remains a perennial favorite game setting. Those players may find themselves excited to know, then, that Goblinworks has announced Pathfinder Online. This MMORPG adaptation of the extremely popular system will be a "hybrid sandbox/theme park-style MMO roleplaying game." The title will feature a "robust trading system [that] puts players in control of the world's economy," which should be wonderful for players who like to work the market. Characters can also establish settlements and expand them into full kingdoms while raising an army to help defend their turf. The announcement boasts randomly generated events, as well, stating that "as settlements develop, the surrounding wilderness develops more complex and challenging features." The goal appears to be not just to create a game, but in fact to bring to life a real, evolving world. Pathfinder fans should keep their eyes on Goblinworks' official site, where further development updates will be posted.

  • Runewaker Entertainment announces Dragon's Prophet

    Runewaker Entertainment, creator of the popular free-to-play title Runes of Magic, has announced its newest upcoming title, Dragon's Prophet. Players will be able to capture a large variety of dragons, each with its own statistics and attributes. After a dragon has been captured, players will be granted a stat bonus based on the stats of the dragon.   • New hack-and-slash MMO Core Blaze discusses boss fights, platforming details

    What is Core Blaze? Well, to be honest with you, we weren't entirely sure either. But from the looks of things, it's an upcoming Unreal-Engine-3-powered action MMO from Gamania and RedGate Studios. "Big deal," you might say. "There's a ton of action MMOs out there already," you might also say. So what separates Core Blaze from the chaff? RedGate Studios' chief operating officer Jacky Chu sat down with PC Gamer to try to answer that very question, and then some. Chu claims that the key factor that will separate Core Blaze from other hack-and-slash MMO titles is its cerebral nature. He emphasizes that the game is "much more than a mindless adrenaline rush." Boss monsters are designed like "a puzzle that can be solved in multiple ways," requiring players to work together to develop and execute a strategy rather than running in sword-swinging and spell-slinging until one side isn't standing. Chu puts emphasis on the fact that players should have ultimate freedom rather than being restricted into one optimal build, one optimal equipment set, one way to kill a boss, or one way to traverse a level. Players looking for an action-based MMO with a great degree of personal choice should likely keep their eyes set on Core Blaze, though no North American release date has been announced.   • Introducing Shadowrun Online

    Cliffhanger Productions, the makers of the upcoming Jagged Alliance Online, has announced another title in progress: Shadowrun Online. Based on the popular pen-and-paper game, Shadowrun will share a similar top-down strategy format with Jagged Alliance. Shadowrun takes place in a dystopian 2070 where magic and technology clash, and where hackers and street samurai are commonplace. Shadowrun Online players will split their game time between prepping missions and carrying them out. While some of the maps will require all-out action efforts, others will require stealth, hacking, and even magic. Between fights, players will seek out contacts, prepare spells, and purchase gear to improve their odds when the time comes. Shadowrun Online is in pre-production and the team hopes to get it into full development by November. It is planned to be a browser-based title, and Cliffhanger is drawing from Shadowrun alumni efforts to keep the game in line with the franchise. The company is still looking for partners to help with publishing and distributing.

  • Embers of Caerus: 'MMO guilds suck'

    Forsaken Studio's newest sandbox MMO may not even have a proper website yet, but that doesn't mean Embers of Caerus can't make waves. In the team's first dev blog, a gauntlet is thrown down to all other MMOs: Your guilds suck, apparently. Nothing personal. "For that part traditional MMORPG guilds have done their job, and they haven't done it badly, but it can certainly be improved," the team writes. It's their opinion that guilds are a little too exclusive and inflexible, not allowing players to mingle in multiple groups as they would in real life. Using Facebook as an example of how people categorize friends into different groups, the devs show that we have grown to expect flexibility in structuring our relationships and social circles. It's the opinion of the team that MMOs should evolve with the times to include the same types of features: "Once we break the bonds of traditional guilds, and work instead to define ways to organise and control our relationships and groups, the possibilities are pretty much endless." Embers of Caerus plans to allow players as much flexibility as possible in their goals and their social groupings, so that an adventurer could be part of both a thieving guild and a merchant troupe if so desired.   • Wargaming.net announces World of Battleships

    First it was by land. Then it was by air. And now the third assault comes by sea. Today Wargaming.net announced that it will be rounding out its "World of" trilogy by adding a third MMO to its roster: World of Battleships. This free-to-play title will focus on the iconic battleships of the last century as players duke it out on the high seas. Like World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, World of Battleships will incorporate player-friendly controls and a clean interface to allow the maximum amount of carnage with the minimum amount of confusion. There will be a wide array of battleships available to play on maps with changing weather conditions and challenging obstacles. Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi sees this as the final step for world domination: "Humans always needed to conquer the elements -- earth, water and air. With World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Battleships we will offer players to conquer all, simultaneously." The company plans to allow players to "distribute resources" between all three titles once they're all up and running.   • NCsoft's Carbine Studios to reveal new MMO at Gamescom

    NCSoft announced today that Jeremy Gaffney, Executive Producer of NCSoft's Carbine Studios has confirmed that the studio's latest project is to be revealed next month at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Gaffney has many titles to his name, having worked on Asheron's Call, City of Heroes/Villains, and a number of other online titles. What is this super-secret mystery project? Well, we don't know, otherwise we'd have already told you now, wouldn't we? However, the press release assures us that the reveal "promises to be different from the standard game project announcement," and will take place as doors open at Gamescom. Can't make it to Gamescom? Don't worry, the studio will also be strutting its stuff at PAX Prime this August where Massively will have its own presence to take a look at whatever this new project happens to be. Stay tuned and we'll be sure to let you know exactly what it is the second we know.   • PitchBlack Games announces Prime: Battle for Dominus

    PitchBlack Games has officially unveiled its new upcoming title, Prime: Battle for Dominus. The game takes a departure from the omnipresent high-fantasy genre, opting instead for a futuristic science-fiction approach. Built on the HERO engine, Prime is named for the element that is the key source of contention in the game's world. This so-called "prime element" is used to power all of the game's advanced technology, and players will find themselves fighting tooth and nail for control of this precious commodity. Players can choose to join one of three playable factions: the Humans, the genetically modified Rodon, or the young race of the Salent. Developers boast that the game will include 11 seamless, fully explorable worlds, each with its own secrets for players to uncover. Players can establish control of these worlds by constructing bases from which to push back invaders who will come in search of precious prime. As one might guess, PvP looks to play a large role in the game, with each faction fighting for dominance over valuable resources with which to advance its own ends. Players looking to make a profit can take up the mantle of the bounty hunter and sell their services to the highest bidder. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the game, however, is GM-run events. Prime will offer live events to provide an unprecedented level of player engagement.   • Luvinia Online begins closed beta signups, releases teaser trailer

    Outspark announced today that beta sign-ups for its upcoming free-to-play fantasy MMO Luvinia Online have begun. The game is already live and "highly successful" in China, and Outspark hopes to duplicate that success in the west. Philip Yun, Outspark's COO, claims the game is "a big labor of love," and touts it as an "action-packed 3D MMORPG [that] is brimming with all the monsters, allies, and challenges that you expect from an Outspark title." The game itself seems to be more or less standard fantasy fare; "The world of Luvinia beckons players into a realm where humans, orcs, gnomes and dwarves once co-existed in peace; however, destiny never stands still," claims the press release. Information on the game's mechanics is sparse, but we do know that there are three class archetypes -- Warrior, Rogue, and Mage -- with "12 subclasses for specialization." Presumably, this means four subclasses for each archetype -- but you never know! Some archetypes get all the love. The game also boasts both underwater and interstellar travel, with "over 50 cities to visit and 130+ maps to explore."   • Mad Catz creates new studio to make flight sim MMOs

    In 2012, you will know that an angry feline can fly! Or so hopes Mad Catz Interactive, which has just announced the formation of an internal studio dedicated to making MMO flight simulators. Dubbed "ThunderHawk Studios," this new team is already hard at work on a title slated for next year. Mad Catz President Darren Richardson sees this as another step on the road to gaming greatness: "The addition of flight simulation games should leverage the market share leadership and global distribution enjoyed by our flight simulation hardware products. The formation of ThunderHawk Studios is an important milestone as we pursue our longer term goal of expanding our participation in developing, publishing and distributing games." Mad Catz is well-known for developing gaming peripherals and other interface hardware for titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Street Fighter IV.

  • Square Enix working on a new MMO

    It's been a tough year for Square Enix, but the studio isn't down and out just yet. On the contrary, during a recent earning briefing CEO Yoichi Wada mentioned that the company is developing another title to be run alongside Final Fantasy XI and XIV. While the details are scarce, Wada said that this goes along with the company's strategy to run two to three MMOs at the same time in order to maintain a strong cash flow. According to the report, Square Enix is focused on developing several new IPs in addition to strengthening its current lineup. Wada said that the new game will be announced by April 2012. This doesn't mean that the studio is abandoning its promise to bring Final Fantasy XIV up to par, a focus that Wada says remains a priority.

  • Massively gets the scoop on Empire & State, a new political MMO

    Ah, we love the smell of a brand-new company. Massively staffers are known to daydream about potentially wonderful new products that might emerge from the cacophony of modern game development. So when we heard about a brand-new company being headed by a hotshot 22-year-old named Brayden Olson, we immediately had a contest to design movie trailers for the story. "Too Young to Fail" beat out "Level 22." EVE Online columnist Brendan Drain provided the voice-over. It was epic. When reality hits, though, we need to hear details. We sat down with Toby Ragaini, the newly appointed Director of Product Development of Novel, Inc., the start-up headed by Olsen. Toby came from the world of Big Fish Games, where he was Vice President in charge of games like Faunasphere. If you've played Asheron's Call, you've experienced some of his handiwork, as well.   • World of Darkness confirmed, based on Vampire: The Masquerade

While it wasn't that closely guarded, we were waiting on the edge of our seats to hear the official word of CCP's World of Darkness this weekend. At The Grand Masquerade convention in New Orleans, the developers not only confirmed the project, but revealed that it is set in White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade setting. Vampire: The Masquerade was indeed the old World of Darkness RPG, so this MMO should send fans into paroxysms of joy. Ardwulf's Lair reports that the MMO will come out in 2012 at the earliest, and that it "will have a focus on player politics and social interaction." The two-minute video reveal sets a gothic tone as a woman narrates the secret world of the vampires: "They're all around us, they control everything, they've always been here, waging their secret wars, devouring everything that gets in their way... It all begins after you die." We'll bring you more details as they pour in, but in the meanwhile, check out the video reveal (NSFW, this is World of Darkness after all) after the break.

  • Phantasy Star Online 2 announced at the Tokyo Game Show

    Phantasy Star Online is dead -- long live Phantasy Star Online 2! Sega just announced the sequel to the hit MMO during a livestream event at the Tokyo Game Show. Slated for release in 2011, PSO2's unveiling was a surprise to just about everyone. Phantasy Star Online released for the Sega Dreamcast 10 years ago, and launched a series of updates, iterations and sequels (including Phantasy Star Universe). While Sega was reluctant to show any gameplay or release any other details, the mere existence of the above title screen should send fans into a happy frenzy.   • Jagex pregnant with its third MMO

    Look who's expecting: Jagex, the maker of RuneScape, not only has one bun in the oven (Stellar Dawn) but another MMO cooking as well. In an interview with Eurogamer, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard announced that the company is working on a new fantasy title. "A lot of what we've done to push the boundary for Stellar Dawn will benefit RuneScape and another MMO we're working on," Gerhard said. "We've got the advantage in that we share the same MMO tech platform. From there it's really down to the studios to decide how its [sic] used." While he was reluctant to share the name of the baby, er, new game, Gerhard said that it was not a sequel to RuneScape. This follows their recent announcement of Stellar Dawn, the company's "biggest MMO to date." You can read the full article at Eurogamer.

  • Outspark's Fists of Fu punches its way into existence

    Outspark breaks from the norm to provide a humorous twist to the MMO genre with Fists of Fu. This free-to-play 2.5D MMO offers gamers the ability to join up with friends for multiplayer PvE action as they take on the nefarious Monster King and his evil companions. Details are not all in, but we know there are up to 30 skills to master for each class (Fighter, Archer, or Magician). Plus, players can participate in insane 4v4 PvP matches on specially designed maps, in order to earn new ranks, status, and items -- even rare items! Founder and CEO of Outspark, Susan Choe, states in a press release: "We really love the light-hearted fun that Fists of Fu brings to the table as compared to the normally serious nature of the MMORPG genre. Not only is the game enjoyable from a narrative standpoint, but the depth of customization, the modes available for players and the anime style graphics really makes it a must-play title." No release date has been set as of yet. But be sure to check out the trailer and sign up for the beta on their website.

  • First Impressions: Tales of Fantasy

    Tales of Fantasy is a game created by IGG that is set in a world of great mounts, strange creatures and small children that carry swords. Well, maybe not small children, but child-like characters that you can take control of. Most players seemed like they enjoyed the larger, more "adult" characters to play, but when I saw the option to play a 6 year old boy that carried a sword I had to have it. Graphically the game is reminiscent of Everquest 2, with all its glowy-edged oddness and its harsh environments. It's one of those games that can be amazing looking in one area only to be followed up by an area that looks semi-unfinished. That could very well be the case, being that the game is actually in closed beta and this is a "First Impression." Still, overall it takes free-to-play game graphics up one more notch.

Aion is undoubtedly a unique game but it also offers enough familiarity to make things feel homey. It all comes down to player preference really, but based on the anticipation leading up to release, we are sure the game will have a successful launch.Here are five reasons we think you should play Aion:1) Polish and performanceIt's really difficult to predict what will happen on launch day, but Aion is probably going to be a candidate for one of the smoothest MMO launches ever based on their track record of polish and performance throughout all the beta phases. It really comes down to two things: the graphics engine and launching in Korea nearly a year ago. We should also mention the recent removal of GameGuard from the launch client will assist things greatly.
