Who knew? Rochester is apparently the place to be if you're up for seeing new HD networks emerge before you even have time to view the previous additions. Just weeks after a half dozen appeared in the aforesaid locale, Time Warner Cable has tossed in a new trifecta: Travel Channel HD (1040), Cinemax HD (1064) and Starz HD (1062). Sure, these may appeal to the premium lovers in attendance more so than anyone else, but hey, new HD channels are new HD channels. Verizon's on quite the roll in the Empire State, and it's not stopping with filing an application to bring FiOS TV to all of New York City. Oh no, it's also bringing HD VOD to every single New Yorker with FiOS TV already, starting right now. On top of that, the carrier's trumpeting its plans to offer up "more than 1,000 high-definition video-on-demand titles each month by the end of the year." Go on, celebrate any way you wish -- before long, everything you watch via the new portal will be dictated by junior, anyway.

Look out, world -- Albany just landed a very fine trio from Time Warner Cable. While most of the nation is sitting around and waiting anxiously for the arrival of ESPNews HD to their lineup, the fine folks in New York's capital are grinning from ear to ear as they enjoy it on slot 1872. Furthermore, Travel HD was added on 1843, and potentially best of all, the local MyNetworkTV (MyTV4) affiliate WNYA was also just added on 1804. Why so important, you ask? The latter channel has inked a deal to broadcast 21 Yankees games in HD that aren't already claimed by YES, and sure enough, the club has its first MyTV4-based showing tonight when it heads to Baltimore to take on the Orioles. Here's to you, Albany. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Mark]

  • Verizon files application to bring FiOS TV to "all" of New York City

While some have said that Verizon is tiptoeing around downtown Boston, the carrier has just made clear that said scenario definitely isn't happening in the Big Apple. Believe it or not, Verizon has just filed an application to bring its FiOS TV service to all five boroughs (yes, Manhattan too) of New York City. More amazingly, the provider says that it hopes to "reach every neighborhood" in the city within a six-year time frame, though the initial go-live date is expected to occur "later this year." Make no mistake -- Verizon is well aware of Time Warner Cable / Cablevision's grasp in the city, and launching a fiber-based alternative could certainly turn things upside-down. Beyond that, we also hear of plans to dish out 150 HD channels by the year's end, and if the proposal is approved, Verizon will too provide a fiber-optic institutional network (INET) to "support the City's public safety needs." Check out the read link for lots more details, and keep those fingers crossed.

  • FiOS TV scoots over to Wappingers Falls, NY

For folks who had their dreams crushed when Verizon announced its intentions to bring FiOS TV to Wappinger, New York, but not quite to Wappingers Falls, take heart. The Dutchess County village has just approved a video franchise for Verizon, meaning that its fiber-based television service is nearly ready for deployment in that area. Unfortunately, there's no telling when the provider will get around to offering service if the New York State Public Service Commission gives the all-important thumbs-up here, but we'd guess it won't be long after Wappinger gets its fill.

  • Verizon targets Stony Point, NY as next FiOS TV community

No sooner does Verizon point the FiOS TV expansion brigade at Western New York (Hamburg, specifically) than it goes and showers yet another community on that side of the state with news of expansion. Stony Point, New York -- nestled quietly up against Keuka Lake about an hour and a half southeast of Rochester -- has become the carrier's next target, and a newly approved agreement authorizing it to sell service there means the wait is almost over. Yeah, TWC's been doing its best to jack up the HD lineup around Rockland County, but with FiOS TV moving in, we'd say the squeeze is really on.

Not satisfied with finding Versus / Golf HD on your EPG a little early? For Time Warner Cable customers located in Brooklyn / Queens, New York, here's another tidbit to appease your insatiable appetite for more high-def. On an updated Channel Changes page for the aforementioned locales, TWC clearly notes that Fox News HD will be headed to those lineups on May 1st in slot 744. Unfortunately, there's no word on when (or if) this newcomer will spread out to other areas, but given the history of TWC not treating all boroughs equally, we wouldn't hold our breath (you hear, Manhattanites?). Check it: Time Warner Cable has seemingly inserted Versus / Golf HD into the lineup some 20 days prior than expected, presumably to satisfy demands of avid hockey fans wanting their NHL playoffs in high-definition. We've had numerous reports from varying regions in the Empire State affirming that the channel is now live on slot 794, but be sure and drop a note in comments if you've somehow been left out. • Verizon aims FiOS TV at Western New York

Though it's easy to throw stones at New York in envy of it being heavily covered by fiber-based TV services (comparatively speaking, of course), those residing in the western half of the state have felt just as left out -- until now. Verizon has announced that it finally landed an agreement authorizing it to offer FiOS TV service to residents of the Village of Hamburg. In case you couldn't tell, the aforementioned locale is the first municipality in western New York to grant the carrier a video franchise, and if no one on the New York State Public Service Commission has any gripes, folks in the area can look forward to seeing the rollout begin this summer. Did we mention we're envious of New York?

As Verizon prepares to phase out the final analog channels in its New York market later this month, it's not wasting any time stringing FiOS TV to more of the Empire State. Yep, folks camped out in Roslyn Estates on Long Island are one step closer to having access to the fiber-based TV service. Earlier this week, the Roslyn Estates Board of Trustees granted a video franchise to the company -- which claims to be one of the few carriers out there that doesn't compress its HD feeds after receiving them from networks -- and pending a review by the New York State Public Service Commission, service should be rolled out in the not-too-distant future.

Rochester's on a roll, and it seems like there's no sign of things slowing down. Just weeks after Time Warner Cable gifted subscribers in the area with the Discovery HD suite and a trio of other high-def favorites, along comes six more sure to please the sports fanatics in the house. Effective immediately, non-CableCARD customers (yep, these are being brought to you courtesy of SDV) in the upstate can find CNN HD (1020), Outdoor HD (1042), MSG HD (1043), NHL HD (1044), Food Network HD (1045) and SportsNet NY (1046). Sure, it's not quite Brooklyn territory, but it's certainly better than what midtown Manhattan's dealing with. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Claude]

Just over a month after residents of Ramapo, New York got word that Verizon's fiber-based TV service was headed their way, now citizens living in Roslyn Harbor on Long Island and the Town of Wappinger in Dutchess County can don party hats of their own. As of this week, Verizon has secured video franchise agreements that authorize it to offer FiOS TV in both communities, bringing the grand total in New York to 102. As it stands, both deals are still subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission, but we see no reason why both regions won't have one more choice for programming in just a few weeks / months.

Time Warner Cable has been toying with the heartstrings of Brooklyn / Queens, New York residents for months now with a succulent lineup of HD additions. Nevertheless, new verbiage from the carrier explains that said newcomers will actually hit the aforementioned boroughs on April 30th (as in, for real this time). Additionally, well-stocked Staten Island will be picking up a few more high-def options on the same day, so click on through to take a look at what to expect in just over a month. Just days after Time Warner Cable gifted Rochester-area citizens with the Discovery suite of HD channels, an eagle-eyed reader located in Albany has noticed that those very channels have also joined their lineup. Effective immediately, those located in and around the capital of the great state of New York can check out Science Channel HD (1825), Animal Planet HD (1835), Discovery Channel HD (1836) and TLC HD (1844). At this point, we're wondering if TWC will ever provide a noticeable boost to the ridiculously deprived Manhattan EPG, but three cheers for Albany, regardless. • Cablevision / Optimum coaxing CableCARD users back to HD STB

It seems The Man is still trying to hold CableCARD users down, as just a month after Bright House and Time Warner users in various locales were forced to either revert to a carrier-issued HD STB or lose out on a few HD channels, along comes Cablevision trying to do the same. This time, however, Cablevision / Optimum actually had the nerve to print up flyers and mail 'em out to CableCARD users informing them that they'll need to switch to the box they (likely) intentionally snubbed to begin with in order to catch the high-def action on the Voom HD family. Worse still, it tries to coax said users into ditching their card by offering an HD cable box gratis for a full year. Needless to say, SDV support for CableCARD can't come quickly enough. %Gallery-18706% [Thanks, Ramon]

Starz Edge, Comedy, and Kids & Family all went HD last summer, but of course, it's up to your carrier to actually get on the ball and snatch up what's out there. Thankfully for those in the capital city of New York, the trio is finally available to you on Time Warner Cable. More specifically, subscribers can catch Starz Comedy HD on channel 1892, Starz Kids & Family HD on 1893 and Starz Edge HD on 1894. A small upgrade, sure, but a welcome one nonetheless. More FiOS TV in New York? Why, yes please! And hey, it's not like you can really blame Verizon -- after all, the Empire State leads the nation in HD adoption. That being said, we're pleased to announce that Ramapo, NY is next on the list to receive the outfit's fiber-based television service, as the New York Public Service Commission just recently "issued an order confirming Verizon's video franchise with the town." Reportedly, the Town of Ramapo's franchise blankets select portions of Hillcrest, Ladentown, Monsey, Tallman, Viola, Northeast Ramapo and Western Ramapo, and while an actual launch date has yet to be set in stone, Verizon senior vice president for New York and Connecticut did say that it was coming "soon."

Effectively immediately, TBS HD and National Geographic HD are live and ready for viewing on channels 1049 and 1055, respectively, and while we're not told exactly what other high-definition additions will come later this year, a recent e-mail sent out to call centers does make mention that more could be (and should be) on the way soon.
