Don't hold out on us -- we know good and well you've been eying HP's bigger than big HDX 18 ever since it got real last month. For those unable to resist the urge to find out what life's like with an 18-inch entertainment notebook gracing their lap (and likely the lap of the guy one cube over), you can order this sucker up right now. Yep, the HDX 18t Premium series gets going at $1,549.99, but it won't take too many configuration tweaks to push that figure well over the $2k mark. Have fun![Via Laptoping]

  • HP releases Pavilion dv3500t, its first 13.3-inch laptop

    10.01.2008

We're all about milestones here at Engadget, so today we'd like to congratulate HP on releasing its first 13.3-inch laptop, the Pavilion dv3500t. Yes, it's been a struggle for the company, missing just high and low of this (apparent?) sweet-spot, which strikes a good blend between power and portability with Core 2 Duo processors ranging from 2.0 to 2.53 GHz, RAM up to 8GB, and up to 400GB worth of disk space if you want it, backed up by an 8X, dual-layer, Super Multi DVD writer. Gigabit Ethernet is on the back, while ports for USB (3), HDMI, and a 5-in-1 card reader occupy the sides, all in a package that weighs in at just over 4 pounds. That new screen delivers a respectable 1280 x 800 resolution and, if you're willing to cough up $100 extra over the $999.99 starting price, you can opt for an LED backlight. If only you could opt out of that garish "Intersect Imprint" exterior. [Via Laptoping]%Gallery-33176%

If HP's latest 16-inch notebook didn't grab you for reasons like: "That's a whole 0.4-inches bigger than my desk," then you're in luck, because for about half the price you can now pick up a Pavilion G60-120US Notebook PC -- HP's first 15.6-inch model. The G60, with 1,366 x 768 resolution display, comes caked with all the ho-hum features you might expect from a $629.99 price tag: 2GHz AMD Turion X2 dual-core processor, GeForce 8200M graphics card, webcam, DVD burner, WiFi, Bluetooth, ExpressCard slot and 250GB hard drive. On the other hand, it's got 3GB RAM, Altec Lansing speakers and HDMI output, weighing in at a palatable 6.06 pounds. Not a bad deal, who needs a lousy HDX anyway, right?[Via Laptoping]

First things first: LaptopMag's Pavilion HDX 16 was entirely more equipped than the basic $1,249 unit that was uncovered last night, so it makes sense that they were swooning over the (optional) 1080p display and the (optional) Blu-ray drive. Granted, those extras will cost you, but it's items such as those that made this notebook so appealing to critics. Overall, the unit performed well in all of the areas that mattered, with strong WiFi scores, decent battery life and excellent processing power. Of note, reviewers did wish for a smoother touchpad and more responsive touch-sensitive buttons, but outside of that, we didn't hear too many complaints. Looking for the 30 second version? "Overall, the HDX 16 is a desktop replacement in a mainstream notebook's body that delivers great value for the price." Got it?Read - Hands-onRead - Full review

  • HP selling laptop in messenger bag at Walmart

It looks like HP is doing its part for the environment and, possibly, thieves with its new Pavilion dv6929wm laptop, which does away with the usual excessive packaging and will instead be sold simply in a specially designed "HP Protect" messenger bag. That idea actually came about through a Walmart initiative that asked companies to produce a product that would reduce environmental impact, which HP won, and has now resulted in the laptop being sold exclusively at Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations. Unfortunately, there's not much word on the specs for the laptop itself just yet but, at $798, we wouldn't exactly expect a powerhouse.[Via Reddit]

For those of you looking to get into HP's Pavilion tx2500z Puma-based tablet PC, the time has come. This "echo" inlaid-design ultraportable sports a 12.1-inch 1280 x 800 swivel touch screen with handwriting capture, AMD Turion Dual-Core processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics chipset, and WiFi. Other features of note include a fingerprint reader, webcam, 5-in-1 media card reader, and 3 USB ports. Unfortunately -- and we think this should be a standard on subnotebooks starting yesterday -- no built-in broadband wireless. That said, you can add a Verizon Wireless V740 ExpressCard during customization checkout. The base configuration will run you a somewhat reasonable $1,049. Go to it, tablet scribblers![Via Computermonger]

  • HP goes all out with Blu-ray-packin' Pavilion laptops for Europe

    by

    03.31.2008

HP's not one to let its laptops sit on the shelf too long without a revamp, and it's now let loose yet another raft of updates for its Pavilion line, albeit only in Europe for now. The big news here is the addition of Blu-ray drives across the board, which obviously replaces the HD DVD option previously found on the models they're replacing. That desirable feature finds its way onto the new Pavilion dv2800, dv6800 and dv9800 series models, which boast 14.1, 15.4, and 17-inch displays, respectively, along with your choice of Core 2 Duo or Turion 64 X2 processors, integrated graphics or NVIDIA GeForce 8400M or 8600M (depending on the model) and even a Blu-ray burner on the 17-inch model. If you're looking for something other than a traditional laptop, HP's also busted out an update to its monster HDX-9000 desktop replacement series in the form of the HDX-9300, and a new Pavilion tx2300 tablet PC (only the former boasts a Blu-ray drive). Otherwise, you can expect the HDX-9300 to pack Penryn T8100 or T9300 processors, 3GB of RAM standard, and a beefy NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS graphics card, while the tx2300 rolls in with a Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor, 2GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics, and a DVD burner standard. No word on pricing or availability for any of 'em just yet, unfortunately, nor is there any word of a release 'round these parts.Read - Notebook Italia, "HP Pavilion dv2800, dv6800, dv9800 with Blu-ray"Read - Notebook Italia, "HP Pavilion HDX9300 and tx2100 tablet PC"

Dubbed "the best-looking 20-inch laptop on the market" by PC Mag, HP's monolithic HDX-9000 was recently hoisted onto the test bench and put through a number of paces to see if it really was worth the fortunes it demands. The stunning 1080p display and LED-backlit keyboard were both highly praised, and while one wouldn't expect a 15-pound rig to excel in the battery life department, it did manage to stay alive for 2.5 hours on a full charge. Unfortunately, the crew was a bit disappointed by the Penryn's performance, but to be fair, it did play back Blu-ray Discs beautifully and handled most everything that was thrown at it with ease. But hey, it's not like we can't understand the lofty expectations given the extraordinarily high price tag. Overall, the newest HDX-9000 didn't seem to blow any minds, but if money ain't a thang, you aren't likely to find a brick more lovable than this.Read - PC Mag review (3.5 out of 5 glistening stars)Read - CNET review (8.2 out of 10 golden hoops)

  • HP tossing Penryn into latest Pavilions

    01.27.2008

You'd think there'd be a bit more excitement associated with the inclusion of Intel's latest and greatest, but HP decided to take the quiet route with integrating Penryn into its Pavilion laptop lineup. The Pavilion dv2700t, dv6700t and dv9700t are all getting an Intel T9300 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo option, with a 6MB l2 cache and a purported 10% speed boost over last-gen Intel processors. Unfortunately, that mild speed boost comes at a $100 premium over the T7500, so you money might be better spent on RAM or a better graphics card -- or you could just choose it all, the Engadget-approved method of speccing a laptop.[Via NotebookReview]

You've read about it, you've heard about it and you've even seen its ghost sneaking out from your closet at night, but now you can finally buy this beast of a machine with its all new hardware. The Pavilion HDX -- which stretches the very definition of a laptop -- is available right now at HP's website, complete with an optional (but really required, you know?) 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, 20.1-inch WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) display, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS and optional HD DVD / Blu-ray drives. Sure, you can claim one as your own for "just" $1,999.99, but HP's "recommended configuration" puts you at $3,645.97. You gotta pay to play, right?[Thanks Vance and Andrew]

In honor of PC Mag's 25th anniversary, HP commissioned ten well-known designers to spruce up one of four different laptop models (the Pavilions tx1000z, dv6500t, dv9500z, and HDX 9000 -- a.k.a. The Dragon). These one-of-a-kind machines made their debut last night at the magazine's rockin' quarter-century celebration hosted at the MGM Grand's Tabu Ultra Lounge -- well, almost all of them did: apparently Applebottoms by Nelly wasn't able to ship its unit out in time. The other nine notebooks from such names as James De La Vega and Paul Frank -- which will be auctioned off after making a short PR tour -- run the gamet from glitzy to understated to politically-minded. 01.03.2008

Survived the barrage of new HP desktops? We certainly hope so, as now the firm is hitting us up with a bit of news on the laptop front. Up to bat first is the 12.1-inch tx2000 convertible tablet (pictured), which presumably takes over for the tx1000 and comes bundled with the outfit's QuickPlay software, a webcam and an integrated microphone (beyond that, it's wait-and-see). As for the oh-so-intimidating Pavilion HDX, it will soon be available with a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS graphics set, an optional Core 2 Extreme processor, Blu-ray / HD DVD support and a 20.1-inch WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) XHD Ultra Brightview display. Additionally, the workhorse will boast four Altec Lansing speakers and a built-in "subwoofer," an eSATA port, hybrid analog / digital TV tuner, room for two HDDs and a media remote to boot. As for pricing and availability, expect the tx2000 to start shipping as CES commences for $1,299 and up, while the newly pimped HDX will ship later this month and start at $1,999.Update: Check out an incredibly boring demo video of the tx2000 after the break.
