It looks like that batch of laptops HP trotted out yesterday wasn't all it had in store, as the folks at Notebook Italia are now reporting that the company is set to update its Pavilion tx1300 line of convertible tablet PCs with all new tx1400 series models. What's more, it seems that at least one retailer (linked below) already has one of those tablets (the tx1410us) up for pre-order, with it setting you back $1,200. For that, you'll get the same 12.1-inch touch screen as before, along with a 2.2GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64 processor, Geforce Go 6150 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and built-in 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth, all in a 4.5 pound package. No word on any of the other models in the line just yet, but according to Notebook Italia, this one is apparently only the first of more to come.Read - Notebook ItaliaRead - JR.com, HP Pavilion tx1410us[Via Mobile Whack]

  • HP's Pavilion Elite m9000t desktop gets reviewed

    by

    10.18.2007

Earlier this month, we noticed that fence-sitters in the drawn out format war could play both sides by picking up the towering m9000t with an HD DVD / Blu-ray combo drive built right in. For those still wondering if it's worth the coin, ComputerShopper managed to sit it down and answer that very inquiry. For starters, the hardware in this "entertainment PC" was said to be mighty robust, and all around performance seemed to exceed expectations. There were no complaints when watching high-definition films, and while this thing wasn't exactly built for gamers, it managed to pass a Company of Heroes test with flying colors. The only notable dig on this otherwise solid machine was the unfortunate lack of "couch-friendly peripherals," but for under $1,500, the Pavilion Elite m9000t was still deemed "an excellent choice."

  • HP launches new low-power PCs, recycling program

HP unveiled a couple new desktops, a new monitor and a slick recycling program in China Taiwan today, and our boys from Engadget Chinese were on the spot just as you'd expect. The HP Pavilion S3260 low-power desktop has a peak power consumption of just 45W but still rocks an Athlon X2 BE-2350 dual-core processor, 256MB NVIDIA 8400GS graphics, 1GB of RAM, a 320GB disk, a multi-format memory card reader, a dual-layer burner and three years of on-site support for an estimated price of NT$29,900 yuan ($3,982 $917). HP was also showing off the 24-inch 2308 LCD, which pivots from portrait to landscape, and the Pavilion m9090 multimedia computer, which sports an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2GB of RAM, a 500GB disk, and 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT graphics, for the insane price of NT$49,900 yuan ($6,646 $1531). Topping it all off is the recycling program, in which HP will take in five old PCs and "re-assemble" them into a new PC to be donated to disadvantaged families. Considering the prices of HP's new PCs, we're assuming everyone in China qualifies as "disadvantaged," so here's hoping that program gets up to speed soon. No word on when we'll see these hit the States, but we'll pretty certain those of you looking to drop six grand on a machine can find other options.Update: Sorry, got some signals crossed through machine translation -- these are launching in Taiwan, and the prices are in Taiwanese dollars, not yuan, which explains a lot.

  • HP offers up HD DVD / Blu-ray drives on select Pavilion desktops

    10.05.2007

Just last month, we heard rumblings that HP may begin offering up two-faced optical drives in its desktops, and sure enough, a variety of select Pavilions are now being served up with HD DVD and / or Blu-ray compatibility. The d4995t, m9000t and m9000z all give users the option of purchasing a vanilla dual-layer DVD burner, an HD DVD / Blu-ray combo player (that also burns DVDs), or a drive that burns Blu-ray / DVD and reads HD DVD. Additionally, a number of lesser-spec'd rigs also provide users the option of picking up an HD combo drive of some sort, and you can even snap up ATI's TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner on the d4995t and m9000t (among others).[Thanks, Ryan]

  • New HP Pavilion notebooks out in Asia

Just a quick follow-up to our earlier story about HP's new laptop bonanza: turns out the new machines are already announced in Asia, and US pricing has managed to tag along with them. Turns out there is more than one "fancy" pattern on the new laptop casings. Depending on if you buy the HP Pavilion dv2600, Pavilion dv6500 and Compaq Presario B1200 laptops, you'll get casing styles called Verve, Influx and Trace (or, in layman's terms, Wierd Wispy Black, White Notches, and Blue-ish Fingerprint, respectively.) All three models will be available from $1,049-1,099 and should be hitting Asia this month, with country specific models to come.

HP has a whole lotta' new laptops to launch, possibly at a press conference this Tuesday if Notebook Italia is on the money. The designations are a real mouthful, so brace yourself: in all, we could be looking at Pavilions numbered dv2600, d6600, dv9600, and tx1300, and new HP G7000 and HP G6000's also coming in the form of Compaq Presario F700 and F500 models. There are a crazy amount of specs here, so it's probably safe to say that there is a machine to suit your requirements. Screen sizes range from 12.1 inch with the tx1300 up to 17 inches with the dv9600, CPUs range from 1.6GHz Core Duos and 1.7GHz Athlons up to 2.2GHz Core 2 Duos and ... well, you get the point. Most notably, the new dv models include HDMI among their image output ports, with the dv2600 featuring some kind of fancy new print on the outer casing (pictured above). For a more detailed listing, check the read links below. Fortunately, spec sheets don't require translation.Read - HP G7000 and G6000 (Notebook Italia)Read - New Pavilions (Notebook Italia)

  • HP and Compaq unveil new AMD-powered laptops

    08.31.2007

Shortly after loosing a slew of AMD-based desktops, HP and Compaq have now unleashed a trio of Pavilion and Presario laptops powered by Advanced Micro Devices. The 17-inch Pavilion dv9500z series offers up a nice selection of AMD Turion 64 X2 processors, Windows Vista, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M (or optional 8400M GS), WiFi / Bluetooth, a built-in webcam and microphone, an optional Verizon Wireless V740 ExpressCard, up to 500GB of HDD storage, a dual-layer DVD writer (or a HD DVD reading drive), and an eight-cell Li-ion to boot. The slightly smaller (that's 15.4-inches, for those keeping count) Pavilion dv6500z series offers up a fairly similar array of specs in a more compact chassis, while the lower-end 15.4-inch Compaq Presario V6500Z series steps down to an AMD Sempron and offers up less upgrades. All three units can be ordered right now through HP's website, and while the Compaq unit starts at $499, the dv6500z and dv9500z get going at $749.99 and $999.99, respectively.[Via NotebookReview]

  • HP relaunches CableCARD media PC, redubs it m8100y

    08.01.2007

Well, would you check this out. Those "issues" that HP was apparently having with its Digital Tuner-equipped m8010y have finally been remedied... in the form of an entirely new machine. Strange as it may be to believe, searching for an m8010y or d4890y at HP's webshop yields information about two recently decommissioned products rather than giving you access to buy one of your own, and users searching for a CableCARD-ready media PC will instead be forced by buy an m8100y. Interestingly, the base CPU is now a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo E6560 and the included graphics card is the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS, and while you'd certainly benefit from a few select upgrades, mettlesome souls can snag the newest HP to (hopefully) play nice with ATI's Digital Cable tuner for as low as $1,149.99.

Something must be in the air this week, at least when it comes to announcements. Almost in tandem with Dell, Hewlett-Packard has entered the fray to show off its phantasmagorical selection of desktop-delights. Nothing groundbreaking here, but a decent cross section of models to choose from, including the small-form-factor Pavilion Slimline s3100n and s3120n, mid-range models a6110n, a6120n and a6130n, and two new media center Pavilions, the m8100n and m8120n. Also on offer are the Compaq Presario SR5110NX and SR5130NX, on a more budget-friendly tip. The majority of these feature the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE integrated graphics chipset and Windows Vista Home Premium. Here's a long list of specs to sink your teeth into: Pavilion Slimline s3100n - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive Pavilion Slimline s3120n - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, TV-tuner, FireWire Pavilion a6110n - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive Pavilion a6120n - Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive Pavilion a6130n - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 400GB hard drive Pavilion m8100n - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, TV-tuner, remote Pavilion m8120n - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 640GB hard drive, TV-tuner, remote Presario SR5110NX - AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU, 512MB of RAM, 120GB hard drive Presario SR5130NX - AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU, 1GB of RAM, 200GB hard drive Clearly a little something for everyone -- as long as you're in the market for an HP desktop, that is.Update - Due to a little Photoshopping mishap, the original image didn't give the correct impression of the size of these desktops side-by-side, but that has been corrected.

  • Best Buy getting exclusive HP Pavilion Verve DV2550se laptop

Wal-Mart's already gotten itself some exclusive Dell computers, and it looks like Best Buy will soon have an exclusive laptop to call its own as well, in this case coming from HP. According to The Wall Street Journal, HP will be selling its forthcoming HP Pavilion Verve DV2550se laptop exclusively at Best Buy starting next month, which has apparently been specially designed after studying "trends in the cellphone and fashion markets." While there unfortunately doesn't appear to be any pics of the laptop just yet, the company's research has reportedly led them to a black-and-bronze design, which it hopes will appeal to college students and young professionals. Other than that, about all that's known about the laptop is that it'll boast a 14.1-inch display, a built-in webcam, and sell for between $1,099 and $1,199, though we're sure we'll be hearing more about it soon enough.[Via Computer Shopper, thanks Sean P]

  • HP gets official with new laptop lineup

    by

    05.09.2007

There's not a lot of surprises given all the leaks we've seen, but HP has now officially taken the wraps of its expansive new lineup of laptops, all of which are based on Intel's new Santa Rosa platform. On the consumer front, the company's introducing a slew of new Pavilion laptops, including the dv2000 series, dv6000 series, dv9000 series, and the previously-announced beast that is the Pavilion HDX. Of the less gargantuan laptops, three new models pack 14.1-inch, 15.4-inch, and 17-inch widescreen displays, respectively, and each come loaded with a variety of Core 2 Duo processors, Nvidia GeForce 8400M graphics, built-in webcams (optional in some models), and integrated WiFi (including 802.11n in some models). Look for these to boast starting prices of $999, $949, and $1,199. For the more business minded, HP's also busted out a number of new laptops in its Compaq Presario line, including the 14.1-inch V3000 series, 15.4-inch V6000 series, the 17-inch 8710 and 8510 series, the 2710p convertible tablet, the 2510p ultralight and, last but not least, the 6910p, 6710, and 6510b "Balanced Mobility" models, which boast 14.1-inch and 15.4-inch displays. On the low-end, you'll be able to get a V6000 laptop starting at just $899, with starting prices going all the way up to $2,199 for the top-end 8510w model. As for availability, you can look for all the Pavilion laptops and the Compaq Presario 6910p, 6710, and 6510b to start rolling out immediately, with some more Presarios following in mid-July and the rest trickling out over the course of the summer.

  • HP's m8010y and d4890y desktops to sport HD combo drives, digital tuners

    05.07.2007

Just because HP has buried the Digital Entertainment Center doesn't mean that it's forgetting about the media-centric crowd, as the company's forthcoming m8010y and d4890y will offer up some fairly swank high-definition niceties. Aside from offering customers the option for an Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad processor and NVIDIA's GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card, this duo will also include a mysterious dual-format combo drive to handle both BD and HD DVD responsibilities. While we can only assume that the GGW-H10N will be the drive of choice, both PCs will boast HD DVD / Blu-ray playback with burning abilities including on the latter, and as if that wasn't enough HD goodness crammed into a PC, moneyed consumers can also opt to have ATI's TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner pre-installed as well. There's no word just yet surrounding pricing, exact configurations, or a launch timeframe, but word on the street suggests that the combo drive should be made available to the adoring public within "four to six weeks."

    04.18.2007

So HP's trying to get all lifestyle-friendly with a few new desktop PC designs, and while the looks and form factors aren't a huge departure for HP by any means, the prices are right, specs are decent, and the looks aren't too shabby. The real looker of the bunch is the relatively tiny HP Pavilion Slimline s3000 series, which starts at $500 with an AMD processor and 1GB of RAM, or $550 if you're going the Intel route. You can configure the desktop with a TV tuner, a couple low rent video cards, and there's a Pocket Media Drive bay option if you're into that kind of thing. If that's still too spendy for you, you can grab from the a6000 set, with prices starting at $330 for an Intel processor, 512MB of RAM, a Pocket Media Drive bay, integrated graphics and not much else. Finally, the m8000 desktops get "fancy" with options for HD DVD drives, beefy dual core processors from AMD or Intel, and prices starting at $950. All of the computers come with Vista preloaded -- which might give these limited specs a bit of a work out -- and are available now.%Gallery-2639%

  • HP's widescreen TX1000 convertible tablet reviewed

    01.08.2007

If you're in the market for an ultralight, sexy, and multimedia-centric convertible laptop, it looks like the TX1000 might not be such a bad choice. According to LAPTOP Mag's review on the pre-production convertible tablet, HP's design team did a bang-up job here, and all the multimedia sweetness (like a dual-layer DVD burner, webcam, "great" speakers, and HP's Media Center) you'd expect in a Pavilion unit still appears even in the 12.1-inch frame. Also praised was the potent 1.8GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, generous 2GB of RAM, and a rather spacious 160GB hard drive; opening and operating applications was noticeably quick, and the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics card did wonders when playing back DVDs and rendering Vista's Aero interface. The biggest digs came (unfortunately) from the glossy touchscreen LCD, as reviewers noted that the screen felt "quite flimsy" when switched into tablet mode, but was assured by HP that finalized units wouldn't suffer the same issue. Additionally, fan noise was (understandably) louder than similar, less-spec'd units, the touchpad was "an acquired taste," it lacked a hover zone found on many other tablets, and the entire touchscreen was simply less responsive than expected. Overall, however, the machine seemed to do more impressing than disappointing, and if you're looking to use this more like a laptop and less like a tablet, this 4-star rated machine would probably suit you just fine.

Although HP's had the business-centric convertible tablet down pat for awhile now, it's mixing in a bit of that general consumer lovin' with the forthcoming tx1000. Taking design roots from the entertainment-based Pavilion laptops, this two-faced machine boasts a twistable touchscreen, built-in webcam, fingerprint reader, and a removable LightScribe-compatible DVD burner to boot. Other niceties include a 12.1-inch widescreen LCD, 5-in-1 flash card reader, Altec Lansing stereo speakers, dual headphone jacks, an HP mini remote control, WiFi, twin omni-directional microphones, and a lightweight shell. While we'd love to spill more exact specifications, the Windows Vista Partner Stories brochure put the brakes on the particulars before things got too frontal, but as with Toshiba's elusive R400, we expect this bad boy to show up alongside Vista's big release, if not sooner.

While we were all distracted with HP's recent acquisition of Voodoo PC, Misters Hewlett and Packard went and quietly released two new PCs sportin' that sexy HD DVD that we love so much. The first is the HP Pavilion m7600n Series PC (pictured) running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, which packs an Intel Viiv chipset with Merom chips -- or an Intel P965 Express chipset -- up to 4GB of RAM, up to 500GB of storage, that ever-so-lovely HD DVD drive, a TV tuner with PVR software, an FM tuner, optional second tuner, remote control, and of course standard wired and wireless networking. Its more practical counterpart, the Pavilion Desktop PC a1630 with HD DVD prefers the AMD action, with a 2.2 GHz Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core, a nVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE video chipset, up to 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a front-panel 9-in-1 memory card reader. Now, while we love these glossy spec sheets as much as the next guy, what we'd really love to see are some price tags and release dates to go with 'em. The 15.4 and 17-inch iterations of HP's consumer-centric Pavilion line of laptops have gotten another update from two less-than jaw dropping, at least performance-wise, machines. Both the DV6000 and DV9000 come out of the box with an ExpressCard slot, Altec Lansing speakers, an optional webcam, a 5-in-1 media readers and your choice of an AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core or a plain old AMD Sempron processor. The 7.8-pound DV9000 (replacing the DV8000) sports a 17-inch WXGA (yuck) or WSXGA screen, a dual hard disk configuration and NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 graphics. The 6.5-pound DV6000 (replacing the DV5000) rocks a 15.4-inch WXGA screen, as well as the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200 card, for a starting price around $850. Things get slightly more impressive on the outside, with same piano black, Zen rock garden-inspired design as the smaller DV2000. The DV6000 is available on HP's website right now for a starting price of $879, but you'll have to sit and meditate a little longer while they prepare the DV9000.

HP just gave a bump to their Pavilion lineup with the introduction of their DV1700 and DV5200 laptops in Japan. Destined for casual consumers, not suits, both models feature Core Duo CPUs, up to 2GB memory, ExpressCard slots, a multi-format memory card slot, and HP QuickPlay allowing you to fire-up DVDs and CDs without booting into XP. The DV1700 gets down with a Core D14-inch, 1280 x 768 (WXGA) LCD, up to 100GB SATA disk, Intel's 945GM Express integrated graphics and the ability to tuck the remote control card away in the ExpressCard slot. The DV5200 features a 15.4-inch LCD with a 1280 x 800 resolution, up to 120GB of SATA disk, integrated Altec Lansing speakers, and the same Intel integrated graphics which may, or may not be adequate to make Vista's Aero interface sing. Both slabs will drop in Japan on June 2 with base configs for the DV1700 pulling ¥79,800/$710 while the DV5200 will start at ¥84,000 or about $750.
