  • PlayStation RPG Threads of Fate coming sewn to PSN

A few weeks ago, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto tailored a poll for fans (and Twitter followers), canvassing to find out what role-playing classics from the PSOne era they'd like to see patched onto the PlayStation Store. We've been on pins and needles anticipating the results, and have been in stitches since Hashimoto announced the results earlier this morning: The next Squeenix RPG to hit the PSN (after Final Fantasy IX, mind you) will be Threads of Fate. If your mind isn't embroidered with memories of the original game, Threads is an action-RPG with platforming elements and Secret of Mana-esque radial menus. Though it was only released to a sew-sew commercial reception, it was unique in that it featured multiple characters, each with their own interwoven story arcs. We won't go into any more detail than that, as we'd hate to post any spoolers. (And now that we've used them all up, you can rest assured that all future posts about this game will be totally pun-free. You're welcome!)

  • ModNation Racers PSP demo due on May 11

If you're anxious to play ModNation Racers on the go but find the prospect of karting a PlayStation 3 around less than enticing, the PSP version might be a suitable alternative. You'll be able to deduce that for yourself if you download the demo, due to arrive on the PSP's online store on Tuesday, May 11th. SCEA San Diego producer Vernon Mollette gave PlayStation Blog readers a good idea of what to expect in the racing sampler. You'll find eight different characters 'n' karts, along with a few tracks and access to an Alpine theme in the Track Studio, which is where creative types can piece together their own tracks. It'll be trimmed compared to the final release (coming May 25th), but Mollette believes "you'll get the idea." If there's anybody you can trust to be honest about what's been cut, it's a Mollette.

If you wanted to play 2007's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow but don't have a PSP, fear not (and remember that you wanted to play that): as revealed by the ESRB last month, Sony is planning to release the game on the PS2, a system that you probably have two or three of in your home. The PS2 port of Logan's Shadow will be released on June 1. It'll include a few new niceties thanks to the extra buttons on the Dual Shock 2, including a "snap" button for getting into cover, a "swing out and aim" button, and dual analog functionality. In addition, this summer will see the release of a Syphon Filter digital graphic novel to the PlayStation Store, filling in the story between Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow. Find out what else is shaded and/or darkened!

  • European PSN releases for April 29

    04.29.2010

Though there's not much new in the "playable games" department, this week's PSN update adds a number of expansions to at least a few games you probably already own, such as Dante's Inferno, Super Street Fighter IV, MAG and Just Cause 2. The PSP gets some new DLC as well, in the shape of a new content kit for LittleBigPlanet and Buzz! Quiz World. Oh, and don't even worry about whether or not "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" made it into Karaoke Revolution, because, as of today, it totally has. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

  • Target offering discounted Wii, Xbox Live and PSN point cards

If you've been waiting for a marginal discount before bulk-buying the fake currency required to download content off your consoles' online marketplaces, Target's got you covered. Until this Saturday, you can stop by your local bullseye-branded retailer and grab a $20 Wii Point Card, Microsoft Point Card, or PlayStation Network card for just $17. Sure, it's not the biggest markdown in the history of shopping, but seeing as how we purchase online e-funds two to three times a day, even the smallest discounts are greatly appreciated. [Thanks, Mike]

  • Gameloft bringing downloadable UNO to PSP on April 22

There are only two ways we could think to improve the UNO experience we currently have access to on the PS3 and 360: Make it available on a handheld console, in order to emulate the joy of holding tiny cards in our hands. Remove all camera functionality, in order to lessen the frequency with which we're exposed to strangers' bathing suit areas. Fortunately, Gameloft is coming through for us in both respects with a downloadable PSP version of UNO, which is set to hit the U.S. and European PlayStation Stores on April 22. The game's video announcement (posted after the jump) mentions it will support local and online multiplayer matches, but doesn't say anything about a price. We've contacted Gameloft to discern this ever-important (yet, surprisingly, often excluded!) detail.

  • Buy the Lord of the Rings HD trilogy on PSN, get a free dynamic theme

We're constantly looking for reasons to re-purchase the Lord of the Rings film trilogy -- a fact clearly evidenced by our ownership of the theatrical versions of the films, the extended director's cut of each movie, the Blu-ray version of the trilogy, and another set of each of those, so we can keep one in mint condition, and watch the other on a bi-weekly basis. A recent PlayStation.Blog post has informed us that we'll need to shell out for yet another version of the films: The HD, downloadable trilogy on the PlayStation Store. Not only does it curtail our need to purchase two versions of the bundle, but it also comes with a free, LoTR-based dynamic PS3 theme. We've already collected a number of background skins for Sony's home gaming console, but we have a feeling this one has a pretty good shot at ruling them all.

One of the beefiest PSP Minis we've seen to date, Kidguru Studios' Freekscape: Escape from Hell, will arrive on the European and North American PlayStation Stores with this week's April 8th PSN update. The game, which goea for $4.99 (or €4.99), is a puzzle-platformer where you must use the minions of Beelzebub to evacuate his domain. Check out the trailer above to get a glimpse of the demonic ingenuity required to brave the hazards of Hades. Who knew pitchforks were so darn practical?

If you're wondering who you need to talk to in order to get your beloved PS1 RPGs onto the PlayStation Store, we're thinking Shinji Hashimoto is the man who gets things done. Last week, he said he was planning on "proposing" bringing Final Fantasy IX to the PSN -- this week, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada confirmed that the game would soon join FFVII and FFVIII on the PS3's Japanese digital storefront. No release date or pricing details have been released so far. Impressive, Mr. Hashimoto. Most impressive. But we bet you can't do it again for Chrono Cross. Oh, and while you're at it, we bet you can't get Vagrant Story localized for U.S. release. C'mon. We dare you.

Don't want to wait for a Blu-ray disc from Netflix? Wish you could watch an HD program instantly (provided your internet connection is robust enough)? The PlayStation Store will be updated today with HD movies for purchase from all six major studios. Previously, movies for purchase were relegated to SD options, whilst HD movies were available exclusively for rent. According to a press release from SCEA, "PlayStation Network is the first to offer high definition movies for purchase from all of the major movie studios," including 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros. The HD update will be available today on the PlayStation Store in the US, with "plans to launch soon in the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain." (Sorry, Canada!) While we still prefer owning Blu-ray discs, this downloadable option is yet another way for people to access content.

The PSN Top 10 sales charts don't look very different from previous months, do they? With the exception of Hustle Kings, the top 10 is populated with familiar faces, including Mortal Kombat II, which debuted on PSN nearly three years ago. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 takes the top spot for the month, likely boosted by the half-off sale it had. With little new scheduled for March on PSN, it seems likely next month's list will look very similar. Marvel Vs. "Part cat, part girl - and fully lethal." That's how Krome Studios' press release describes the heroine of the upcoming Blade Kitten, a two-part, downloadable arcade action game coming to the PS3 this Spring. The anime-inspired game is based off a comic of the same name, created by Krome Studios co-founder Steve Stamatiadis. A gameplay trailer will debut later tonight exclusively on Spike TV's GameTrailers TV. Expect to see some platforming, sword fighting and a disturbing focus on her -- we kid you not -- "smart mouth" and "hot body." Meow. Before then, you can watch a teaser trailer after the break. %Gallery-85940%

  • BlazBlue Portable confirmed for US retail, PlayStation Store

Confirming an earlier GameFly listing, Askys Games has announced that BlazBlue Portable will be hitting, juggling and then pulverizing the US in a succession of 673 extra-dimensional laser punches this March. The PSP version of the frenetic fighter will be available via UMD at first, and then the PlayStation Store approximately two weeks later. Thankfully, fans of the console game's bold, 2D artwork need not worry about a calamity being triggered (hnngggghhh) in the miniaturization process. According to Aksys project lead Michael Manzanares, "Every frame of animation and hit box is painstakingly replicated from the original game, so all of your combos work without a hitch. And new Unlimited versions of your favorite characters don't hurt, either." BlazBlue Portable will also support multiplayer battles via Ad-Hoc mode, so you can punch all your friends -- right in their foolishly unprotected hit boxes.
